[1 of 4] Cycling Japan's Abandoned Rail: 北海道廃線巡り (The Haboro Line・羽幌線)
Episode 2・第2話: Episode 3・第3話: Episode 4・第4話:
Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido, was once crisscrossed with an extensive network of railway lines. However by the time the 1980s rolled around, decades of depopulation and lost industry finally caught up to them, with all but a handful shutting down.
This past summer we traveled up north with our bicycles and spent a month cycle touring throughout Hokkaido, searching out and following these decaying symbols of Hokkaido's past.
In this first episode (of a planned four), we follow the Haboro Line, which ran on the northwest coast of Hokkaido, connecting the city of Rumoi in the south to Haboro in the north.
