The Fanjingshan (Chinese: 梵净山) or Mount Fanjing, located in Tongren, Guizhou province, is the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains in southwestern China, at an altitude of 2,572 m (8,438 ft).[1] The Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve was established in 1978 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1986.[1] The reserve covers a total area of 567 km2 (219 sq mi) and is a conservation area for primitive vegetation of the mid sub-tropic alpine region of western China. The rare gray snub-nosed monkey occurs only in a small region centering on Fanjingshan. It is also a sacred Buddhist mountain, a status it has held since the Ming dynasty.[1] Fanjingshan was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018.[2]Buddhism
Fanjingshan is considered a sacred mountain of Chinese Buddhism, ranking just behind the Four Sacred Mountains of Buddhism. It is considered thebodhimaṇḍa (or daochang) of the Maitreya Buddha.[3] The influence of Buddhism reached Fanjingshan by the Tang dynasty at the latest, especially after Hou Hongren (侯弘仁) constructed the Zhangke Road in 639, which facilitated transport in the mountainous region, and local gazettes record the construction of several temples in the area.[3] More temples were built during the ensuing Song and Yuan dynasties.[3]

Fenghuang (Phoenix Ancient Town), Hunan, China
Fenghuang County (simplified Chinese: 凤凰县; traditional Chinese: 鳳凰縣; pinyin: Fènghuáng Xiàn; literally: phoenix county) is under the administration of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan province, China, bordering the prefecture-level cities of Huaihua to the southeast and Tongren (Guizhou) to the west. It has an exceptionally well-preserved ancient town that harbors unique ethnic languages, customs, arts as well as many distinctive architectural remains of Ming and Qing styles. The town is placed in a mountain setting, incorporating the natural flow of water into city layout. Over half of the city's population belong to the Miao or Tujia minorities. It was the centre of the unsuccessful Miao Rebellion (1854–73), which created a Miao diaspora in Southeast Asia during the last two centuries. The city is revered in Miao traditions and funeral rites and is the location of the Southern China Great Wall (中国南方长城; 中國南方長城; Zhōngguó Nánfāng Chángchéng; Miao: Suav Tuam Choj), a fortification built by the Ming dynasty to protect the local Han Chinese from Miao attacks.
