Parma Italy and Torrechiara Castle
The drone I used: (
This is the last full day Ashley and Mark got to spend together before Mark leaves/ left Ashley in Italy for three months. In an effort to make the most out of the day we tried to take a tour of a parmesan cheese factory in Parma, but had no luck getting a tour. We then headed to Castello di Torrechiara (Torrechiara Castle). We were very happy to get some great drone shots of the castle. We ended the day by the economics university in Parama, eating a kabab and enjoying the local activities.

Parma is a university city in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, famed for Parmesan cheese and Parma ham. Romanesque buildings, including the frescoed Parma Cathedral and the pink marble Baptistery, grace the city center. Classical concerts take place at the Teatro Regio, a 19th-century opera house. The Galleria Nazionale, inside the imposing Palazzo della Pilotta, displays works by painters Correggio and Canaletto.
If reincarnation ever becomes an option, pray you come back as a Parmesan. Where else do you get to cycle to work through streets virtually devoid of cars, lunch on fresh-from-the-attic prosciutto and aged parmigiano reggiano, quaff crisp, refreshing Lambrusco wine in regal art-nouveau cafes, and spend sultry summer evenings listening to classical music in architecturally dramatic opera houses. Smarting from its position as one of Italy's most prosperous cities, Parma has every right to feel smug. More metropolitan than Modena, yet less clamorous than Bologna, this is the city that gave the world a composer called Verdi and enough ham and cheese to start a deli chain. Stopping here isn't an option, it's a duty.
Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Parma Cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of a Romanesque Cathedral in Italy, and is particularly known for its fantastic interior frescos. As the main Baptistery of Parma, this structure sits next to the cathedral but actually dwarfs it in size and stands higher than the central point on the roof of the cathedral.
Parma has a number of charming squares, but the most notable is the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi that can be found to the south of the cathedral in the historic town centre. Located within the Palazzo della Pilotta complex, the Teatro Farnese is one of the most renowned example of a wooden theatre that stands today.
Tucked behind the cathedral is another fantastic church – The Church of St. John the Evangelist that was created in the 1500’s during the Renaissance. Constructed in the late 1500’s, this complex served various functions including a royal palace and a court. Parts of the structure remained unfinished and thus create a strange combination of plain stone architecture together with decorated facades and beautiful arched walkways. Within the complex you can find The National Gallery, The Biblioteca Palatina and the magnificent Teatro Farnese.
Parma has several beautiful parks, but non as expansive and luscious as the vast Parco Ducale. Covering over 200 square metres, this park is one of the central places of recreation in Parma and is simply known as “The Garden”. Located across the river adjacent to the Palazzo della Pilotta, the park is easily accessible.
Another fine establishment that is located within the Palazzo della Pilotta complex, the National Archaeological Museum was founded in 1790 and has housed a fantastic collection of ancient artefacts and relics ever since. If you are looking for a day trip from Parma, the quite country village of Torrechiara offers a different experience.

Places to see in ( Reggio Emilia - Italy )
Reggio Emilia is a city in northern Italy, in the Emilia-Romagna region. It has about 171,400 inhabitants and is the main comune of the Province of Reggio Emilia. The town is also referred to by its more official name of Reggio nell'Emilia. Often written off as an emergency pit stop on the Via Emilia, Reggio Emilia states its case as the birthplace of the Italian flag – the famous red, white and green tricolour – and a convenient base for sorties south into the region's best natural attraction, the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano.
Those savvy enough to get out of their train/car/bus will find a cyclist-friendly city of attractive squares, grand public buildings and a leafy park. Known also as Reggio nell'Emilia, the town started life in the 2nd century BC as a Roman colony along the Via Emilia. Much of Reggio was built by the Este family during the 400 years it controlled the town, beginning in 1406.
The best Reggio Emilia can offer is all in the city center, so you probably won't need to get a taxi. Taxi are not so common in Reggio Emilia, it's almost impossible to see one around in the streets. If you need one, you can catch it at the train station, or just make sure to have phone numbers to call one. Visit the Maramotti collection of modern art, located in what was formerly the site of production of Max Mara clothing in the suburb of Pieve Modolena (reached with a short westward trip by bus along the via Emilia)

The hills and the mountains in the south of Reggio Emilia are definitely worth a visit, but you can reach some areas only if you have a car or a motorbike. The main locations will be served also by public transports (bus). If you travel by bus make sure to buy your return ticket before leaving Reggio and to check the time tables, as there's no public transport in the evening and in the night.

Castello di Torrechiara, Torrechiara, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe
Torrechiara Castle is a 15th-century manor with medieval and Renaissance tracts, located on the top of a rocky panoramic cliff at the doors of Val Parma, is flanked by the small medieval village of Torrechiara, hamlet of Langhirano, in the province of Parma. Desired by Count Pier Maria II de 'Rossi as a mighty defensive structure and elegant nest of love for herself and the lover Bianca Pellegrini, is considered one of the most remarkable scenographic and best preserved castles d 'Italy. Since the 1911 Italian National Monument, protected by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism in the Emilia-Romagna Museum [6], is included in the circuit of the Castelli Association of the Ducato of Parma and Piacenza. The castle stands at an altitude of 278 m asl. on the top of a terraced hill, whose eastern and southern flanks were raised at the time of the manor building to allow the construction of defensive structures. The mighty fortification develops on a nearly rectangular plant around the Central Court of Honor, with four quadrangular towers at the ends; is surrounded by the triple stone wall circle, modified at the end of the 16th century: the most exterior, demolished, rolled up the hill; the middle one, lowered, encircles the village extended to the north of the castle; the most internal, partially elevated, contradicts the manor. The building is also encircled by a double moat, originally dominated by two hoist bridges: the outermost, vanished, developed around the village; the most interior, still existing, surrounds the wall circle closest to the castle. Both ditches were designed dry by Pier Maria II de Rossi himself, so he wanted to prevent those who intend to attempt climbing to the castle had the chance to hide in the water. The manor house, lined with stone as well as brick on the top of the towers, rises on high slopes, specially built for structural and especially warlike reasons. In addition to the three wall circles, the two ditches, the double bridge decks and the two rivells, there are numerous defensive features originally found in the fortress, which still reveal the traces: the sinuous access path exposed to the shooting of archers; the wooden winds closing the spaces between the Ghibelline boulders, later covered by roofs; the compartmentable walkways; the long bastards with cadizies running on the perimeters of the towers and exterior facades of all the buildings; the massive doorman surmounted by dungeon. The eastern prospect differs from the others by the presence of the two fronts projecting from the towers, built at the end of the sixteenth century, lifting the ramparts of the inner circle; at the top there are two large panoramic loggias, overlooking the Val Parma and the plain.

Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Castello San Giorgio
Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Castello San Giorgio
The castle of San Giorgio is one of the most representative monuments of the city of Mantua and is part of the Reggia dei Gonzaga. Built on the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Capo di Bove from 1395 and completed in 1406 on commission of Francesco I Gonzaga and designed by Bartolino da Novara , the castle of San Giorgio is a square-shaped building consisting of four corner towers and surrounded by a moat with three doors and relative drawbridges , aimed at defending the city.
The architect Luca Fancelli , in 1459 on the recommendation of the Marquis Ludovico III Gonzaga , who freed the rooms of the Corte Vecchia for the Council promoted by Pius II , restructured the castle that definitively lost its primitive military and defensive function. For many years the manor house was the residence of Isabella d'Este , wife of Francesco II Gonzaga , one of the most famous noblewomen of the Renaissance . Isabella wanted at the court numerous artists and humanists of the time, such as Andrea Mantegna , Perugino , Leonardo da Vinci , Ludovico Ariosto andBaldassarre Castiglione , making Mantua one of the major European courts and artistic and literary center. In the prisons of the castle the condottiere Paolo Vitelli was closed again in 1496 , taken prisoner by Francesco II Gonzaga. The castle, along with other adjacent buildings, remains the prince's residence for about a century, until the time when Guglielmo Gonzaga will move his apartments into the restored Old Court.
In 1810 the Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer was imprisoned in the prisons of the manor before being executed. Starting from 1815 with the Austrian occupation of the city, the castle became the maximum security prison in which the opponents were closed. From 1852 in the castle were enclosed the Martyrs of Belfiore and some patriots attached to them ( Ciro Menotti , Teresa Arrivabene ). The earthquake of Emilia in 2012 caused structural damage to the building.
The rooms of the castle :
Sala dei Soli , located on the ground floor and embellished with frescoes of the fifteenth century , was transformed by Giulio Romano in 1531 and then by Giovan Battista Bertani
Sala degli Stemmi , which is accessed by a spiral staircase
Salone degli Affreschi , parallel to the Sala degli Stemmi
Sala delle Sigle , Isabella d'Este's wedding room
Saletta della Grotta , part of the Isabella d'Este apartment in the castle
Sala delle Armi , in which Giulio Romano painted 12 heraldic crests
Chapel of the castle , built by Bertani in 1563
Middle Room
Hall of the Frieze
Sala delle Cappe , with a barrel vault
Sala dello Zodiaco , with traces of paintings by Giulio Romano , where Pietro Frattini , one of the Martyrs of Belfiore and Ciro Menotti , was held prisoner
Camera degli Sposi .
The Camera Picta (Camera degli Sposi), a wonderful room on the main floor of the north-eastern tower of the castle of San Giorgio, is the work of Andrea Mantegna . The Mantegna has made it over a period of nine years, from 1465 (date engraved on the wall) to 1475 (date engraved on the commemorative plaque at the entrance of the hall), and readjusted the narrow space of the cubic room with vaults on lunettes in a succession of reality and fiction giving the environment an en plein air atmosphere (thus giving an idea of being in a false loggia). The space of each wall of the room was divided by the artist into three openingsthat transmit to the spectator, through wide arches, bucolic landscapes and curtains moved by the wind a strong antithesis with the reduced architectural environment. The frescoes have been made either dry (north wall, this technique allows a meticulous care of details) or fresh (south wall, the fresco obliges the painter to opt for a more synthetic taste). There are two painted scenes depicting members of the Gonzaga family , the Scene of the Encounter and the Scene of the Court . With them Mantegna pays tribute to the patrons that so many clients have procured for him. In the room, you can not stand more than 5-10 minutes because (using the technique of dry painting) the humidity and the exhaled air
