The Fondation Claude Monet is a nonprofit organisation that runs and preserves the house and gardens of Claude Monet in Giverny, France. With a total of 530,000 visitors in 2010, it is the second most visited tourist site in Normandy after the Mont Saint-Michel. The House and Garden have been recognised as a Maison des Illustres and Jardin remarquable rewarding their outstanding qualities. The estate was classified as a Monument historique in 1976.

Deauville was conceived for fashionable pleasures. It emerged from the dunes in the 1860s, thanks to the vision of one Dr Joseph Olliffe and his close friend, Emperor Napoleon III’s half-brother, the Duc de Morny. At the end of the 1850s, marshes lay between the sea here and a little slope-side village above.

Dr Olliffe convinced wealthy backers to invest in a major scheme to drain the marshes and create a resort from nothing. The resort was designed by architect Desle-François Breney, inspired by Baron Haussmann’s redevelopment of Paris. Aided by an all-important, brand-new railway line, the resort came into full bloom within just four years. Grand hotels in the Anglo-Norman timber-frame style, smart bathing facilities and a stylish racecourse catered to elegant Parisians.

Further chic additions followed through time. In the Belle Epoque before the outbreak of World War I, more sumptuous hotels went up, along with a major casino. During the Great War, Deauville’s big hotels were turned into hospitals for wounded Allied soldiers. Between the wars, Deauville developed a grand new station, iconic galleried bathing facilities and its wooden beach boardwalk.

After World War II, the resort’s international reputation grew. A cluster of marinas beside the Touques estuary added to the permanent attractions, while the American Film Festival, inaugurated in 1975, began drawing stars and fans of the silver screen each September.

All told, in recent years, Deauville has greatly increased the cultural events on offer year-round, to accompany its well-established pleasures of horseracing, polo, golf, art galleries and upmarket shopping. The historic Presqu’île de la Touques area beside the marinas is undergoing an exciting renovation. As to the glorious, wide, sandy beach, peppered with colourful parasols in summer and backed by a long boardwalk and the changing booths, it remains a joy for all to enjoy.

Cinq expériences pour faire vibrer vos sens à Paris

Les sens en éveil, vous explorez la Ville Lumière en quête d’expériences inédites. Le palais enivré par des vins d’exception, l’oreille frémissante au son d’un concert… Paris se dévoile autrement.

Il y a comme un parfum de bergamote, d’ambre et de lavande près de l’Opéra de Paris. Au coin du square Louis Jouvet, vous trouvez l’origine de ces doux effluves : le musée du Parfum Fragonard. Ici, toute l’histoire des fragrances et de leur fabrication est retracée à travers des objets d’art uniques. Flacons sertis de diamants, fioles anciennes et affiches du début du XX e siècle vous plongent – de Grasse à Paris – aux origines de la parfumerie française. Nez amateur ou confirmé, vous respirez ensuite les différentes senteurs de la maison Fragonard avec l’aide d’un spécialiste.

En descendant l’avenue de l’Opéra, un autre lieu discret attire votre attention. Vous poussez la porte des Caves du Louvre, lovées dans un ancien hôtel particulier. Les premières salles sont destinées aux néophytes en œnologie : crus, cépages, vignobles y sont expliqués en détail avant d’entrer dans le « Laboratoire » où les différentes notes des vins sont extraites dans des fioles pour vous permettre de mieux appréhender votre dégustation. Plus loin, un sommelier vous attend. Il est l’heure de mettre votre palais à l’épreuve.

Cet atelier gustatif vous a mis en appétit. Vous vous dirigez à présent vers le musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac. Situé sur le toit de l’édifice, le restaurant Les Ombres vous offre une vue à couper le souffle. Les grandes baies vitrées ouvrent un panorama sur tout Paris. À gauche, le dôme scintillant des Invalides se détache au-dessus des bâtiments haussmanniens. À droite, la Seine déroule son tapis bleuté tandis que la silhouette du Sacré Cœur se devine à l’horizon. En face, vous ne pouvez décrocher vos yeux de l’imposante Tour Eiffel qui, vue d’ici, semble flotter sur la capitale. Vous en êtes tout ébloui, tandis que le chef s’active en cuisine pour vous proposer un repas raffiné.

Et si vous éveilliez désormais un autre de vos sens ? Vous êtes attendu à la Philharmonie de Paris pour un concert dans la grande salle Pierre Boulez. Dans cet auditorium unique au monde, le public enveloppe les musiciens pour une expérience acoustique d’exception. Ici, les notes filent dans les airs pour atteindre le cœur même des spectateurs.

Vous avez bien mérité une nuit de repos. Dans le quartier en plein renouveau de La Chapelle, vous prenez une chambre à l’iconoclaste Kube Hôtel. Oscillant entre le bunker et le coin douillet, la décoration de l’établissement s’inspire à la fois de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et du design scandinave pour proposer une abondance de textures à toucher. Une installation en verre dans la cour, une jungle de végétation dans le hall, des boiseries épurées dans les chambres et un surprenant bar tout en glace (à – 22°C !)… l’hôtel vous offre une véritable panoplie de matières pour un séjour décidément jubilatoire à Paris.
