Dubrovnik is a walled city on the Adriatic Sea Coast of the south of Croatia.
Due to its exceptional beauty and rich history, this ancient town is considered to be the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. It is one of the most prominent tourist resorts of the Mediterranean and a World Heritage Site.
The City Walls are the biggest attraction. They run around the Old Town and they have a great view of Dubrovnik and the see.
There are four city gates, two of the major entrances are:
On the eastern side the Gate of Ploce, which is protected by the freestanding Revelin Fortress.
And on the western side, defended by Fort Bokar, the Gate of Pile.
From the Pile’s Gate and the Onofrio´s Fountain starts the central street of the old town, the Stradun. This representative place of the city leads to Luza Square.
One of the most impressive squares in town features:
Church of Saint Blaise, the City Hall, the Roland's Column, the Bell Tower and the Sponza Palace.
Next to Luza Square and the City Hall are situated: a museum dedicated to the city’s history, the Rector’s Palace and the impressive Dubrovnik Cathedral.
At the eastern part of Dubrovnik is located the Old Port. Despite the name it is still used by private citizens, as well as sightseeing tours and regular boat lines.
Inside the city walls there are a synagogue, a mosque, and a lot of churches, such as:
St Ignatius Church.
Or St Sebastian Church, and standing just behind it the Dominican Monastery and Museum.
One of the most important and well preserved historical sites of town is the Lazareti, an independent cultural center that brings together artists, philosophers and writers.
Dubrovnik has not only churches and museums but also beaches. From Banje Beach there is an amazing view to old town and the island of Lokrum.
Outside the walls was built an essential fortification to the defense of the city, St Lawrence Fortress.
The main purpose of its construction was to protect the freedom of people from ground and sea attacks, today it is a tourist attraction and theater.
To see the city from high up the best place to go is Minceta Tower, one of the most beautiful cultural attractions in Dubrovnik.
