Shillong, the capital of medhalaya, has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the northeast india. It is situated at an attitude of 1,520 meters (4,990 feet) above sea level. It is situated on a plateau bound on the north by the Umiam gorge, on the northwest by the great mass of the Diengiei Hills that rise up to a height of 1,823 meters (6077 ft.) above sea level, and on the northeast by the hills of the Assam valley. It is also known as the Scotland of the East due to its striking similarity with the Scottish highlands. It is located at distance of 104 km from Guwahati, 295 km from Kaziranga, 578 km from Siliguri and 658 km from Darjeeling.

1. Shillong Peak :
Shillong Peak, Shillong Overview. At the height of 6449 ft and 1965 m above sea level, this is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird's eye view.
2. Umiam Lake :
Umiam Lake is a reservoir located in the hills 15 km to the North of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was created by damming the Umiam river in the early 1960s. The principal catchment area of the lake and dam is spread over 220 square km.
3. Elephant Falls :
A popular tourist attraction near Shillong, Elephant falls is a combination of 3 rivers. One of the British officers named it as Elephant falls after they saw a rock which resembled as an elephant. This rock was later destroyed due to earthquake.
4. Mawlynnong village :
Mawlynnong is a village in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya state in North East India. It is famous for its cleanliness and natural attraction. It comes under the Pynursla community development block and Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) constituency.
5. Ward's Lake :
Ward's lake is a must-visit place when in this pristine north-eastern city. Also known as Pollock's Lake, this artificial water body is encircled by an extensive lush garden and lies in the middle of the city.
6. Lady Hydari Park :
The Park got its name from the nature loving first lady of the state, Lady Hydari the wife of Governor of Assam. This mini zoo clubbed with a deer park stretches for more than one Kilometre and presents some of the best grown rose beds.

1. Rohtang Pass :
Rohtang Pass- a gateway to Lahaul and Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, remains one of the most spectacular destinations in the entire Kullu region. This picturesque pass is located around 51 kms away from Manali, at a height of 3980 meters, on Manali Keylong highway.
2. Solang Valley :
Solang valley is also known as the 'Snow Valley,' which is famous for hosting various winter adventure sports like skiing, parachuting, paragliding, trekking, and mountaineering. This dazzling valley is one of the most picturesque sights in Manali and is located at an average altitude of 2,560 meters above sea level.
3. Hadimba Temple :
Hadimba Temple, which was constructed in the 16th century, is one of the best places to visit in Manali and is located amid a beautiful deodar forest on top of a hill in Manali. The temple holds great significance for the locals and also the tourists who frequently visit the pilgrim spot to seek blessings from Goddess Hadimba.
4. Vashist Hot Water Springs :
Vashisht is 6 km. from Manali ( in district Kullu ). It is located well above the river Beas. The hot water springs emerge through granitic gnessies which, in this part of the Himalaya, cover a very large area. Vashisht hot water springs have made this low profile village famous around the world. The village is 3 km. from Manali on the left bank of the river Beas, at the foot of a laterite and conglomerate rock hill covered with majestic Deodar and pines. The Tibetan monastery is one of the major tourist spot in Manali and is famous for weaving different and colourfull carpets. Residents and immigrants of Tibet produce handmade handicrafts to attract the various tourists.

Great Himalayan National Park is located in the upper ranges of Himalaya It is a kaleidoscope of alpine flora and fauna. A major part of the national park is permanently under glaciers and ice. It is one of the last undisturbed Western Himalayan ecosystems giving shelters to a diverse variety of wildlife and forests.

Gulaba is a small village near Manali which is located on the road to Rohtang pass. Named after Raja Gulab Singh of Kashmir, the village of Gulaba is flanked by the picturesque beauty of snow covered mountains, grasslands and the Beas river that washes away its landscapes.
8. Beas River :
The Beas River in Manali originated from the Himalayas, passes through the kush evergreen forests and hills and ends at Punjab. It embraces with the Satluj river, before entering Pakistan. The river is the source of drinking water for the people in Kullu, Manali and Kangra regions.

Kasol is a small Himalayan village, with plenty of things to do like trekking, shopping and hiking along the Parvati River to choose from.
10. Manikaran :
Manikaran is located in the Parvati Valley along the banks of river Parvati, northeast of Bhuntar in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. Shillong has been called as the 'Scotland of the East'. This is because of its aesthetic, graceful and picturesque landscapes.
The city is bestowed with some quintessential sightseeing facilities like the Ward Lake or the Botanical Garden. But what holds attention of the tourists are the waterfalls in and around Shillong. Among them the Elephant Falls of Meghalaya holds the prime attention. Here we present to you top 10 places to visit in Shillong.
1) Elephant Falls
It is a combination of 3 rivers. One of the British officers named it as Elephant falls after they saw a rock which resembled as an elephant. The falls are surrounded with green vegetation that provides a perfect backdrop.
2) The Don Bosco Museum
It is part of DBCIC (Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures). DBCIC comprises research on cultures, publications, training, animation program and the museum, which is a place of knowledge-sharing on the cultures of the northeast in particular, and of culture in general.
3) Shillong Golf Course
It enjoys the rare distinction of being one of the few natural golf courses in Asia. Not only is the Shillong Golf Course scenic and enjoyable, it is also challenging. A group of British civil service officers introduced golf to Shillong in 1898 by constructing a nine-hole course. The present 18-hole course was inaugurated in 1924.
4) Laitlum Canyons
One of the least explored place in Shillong. This gorgeous place will provide you a panoramic view of the Rasong village and grassy valleys. This is a must visit destination.
5) Motphran
The “Stone of France” which is locally known as Motphran was erected in memory of the 26th Khasi Labour Corps who served under the British in France during World War I. It bears the words of the famous Latin poet Horace Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori which can be roughly translated as It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country.
6) David Scott Trail
The stretch between Ladmawphlang village to Mawphlang village is roughly 16 kms long and is a picturesque day hike. This was originally the horse-cart road that connected the plains of Slyhet (now in Bangladesh) to Assam. Camps can be set to treat the eyes to the stunning views of lush rugged Umiam valley.
7) Ward's Lake
A beautiful manmade lake named after Sir William Ward, the then, Chief Commissioner of Assam. Also known as the Polok Lake, it is an artificial lake with garden and boating facilities.
8) Cathedral Catholic Church
In the heart of the city, there stands a beautiful cathedral of Roman Catholics dedicated to Mary Help of Christian. The Cathedral is the principal place of worship of the over 300,000 strong Catholics of the Shillong Archdiocese which covers the Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills of Meghalaya
9) Shillong Peak
It offers a panoramic view of the scenic countryside and is the highest point in the state. Obeisance is paid to U Shulong at the sanctum sanctorum at the peak's summit every springtime, by the religious priest of Mylliem State.
10) Lady Hydari Park
A popular spot both with locals and tourist, it is located in the heart of the city with an abundance of plants and flowers. The best months to see the flowers in bloom are April and October. The park stretches over a kilometer and has an adjacent mini zoo.
