Argentina travel trip: Purmamarca area (Jujuy Province) November 2011
Purmamarca: Hosteria de Amauta in Purmamarca, Jujuy Province was our home for 4 nights. The adobe village sits at the base of the Seven Color Mountain within a stunning canyon or quebrada created by the Rio Grande. We had daily meetings wtih Marta Valdiviezo, a local weaver, learning about her art and sharing felting techniques taught by Deb and Fran. In addition, we hiked Los Colorados Trail and spent time in the village market. Segment II of Weaving Andean Stories: Tracing Argentina's Cultural Heritage and Traditions. Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy Argentina
Located in Argentinas northernmost province of Jujuy, the Quebrada de Humahuaca is a stunning multi-colored canyon which runs 200km and is dotted with tiny colonial villages. The first town we visited in this region was Purmamarca, which boasts the Cerro de Siete Colores (Hill of 7 Colors). We then spent some time exploring the mountains and canyons around Tilcara, the largest town in the Quebrada. We continued north towards Bolivia to the town of Humahuaca. Here is the oldest mechanical clock in South America.
