Mysterious Sands of Russia. Russian village surviving in the sands
The village of Shoina is spread over several tens of kilometres along the White Sea coast beyond the Arctic Circle and 1,400 kilometres north of Moscow. It was founded in 1930 as a huge base for the fishing industry, producing a variety of canned fish. The port hosted literally hundreds of cargo ships. Shoina was once a hive of activity: the locals grew crops and bred cattle. Songs and social occasions celebrating youth could be heard all through the night.
Today though the settlement is on the brink of an ecological disaster. Deep-sea trawling has wiped out all sea bed vegetation causing a build-up of thousands of tons of sand which is blown onto the land by powerful arctic winds, obliterating houses and buildings. Even though Shoina's population is shrinking rapidly, some local people continue to stand against the dire effects of desertification: they eke out a living by fishing, growing scarce vegetables and, as if that wasn’t enough, they take charge of ensuring that their local weather station remains operational.
The severe aftermath of desertification has also affected the Kalmykia region, once famous for its fertile lands. The “Cherny Zemli” reserve is a most unique man-made desert, 200 kilometres southwest of Elista, Kalmykia's capital. In the Soviet times the land here was set aside to grow corn. That decision however turned out to be an unqualified disaster; The crop drew massive amounts of water from the ground and completely dehydrated the soil leaving behind only sand. The locals speak out about how they’re now seeking to counter the aftermath of desertification.
The “Chara sands” desert has been recognized being among the most unique places on the Russian map. This natural wonder is in the extreme north of Zabaykalsky Krai, in Kalarsky District. An outstanding mix of mountain ice peaks, dark Taiga forests and endless patches of mysterious quicksand attracts tourists from all over the country but only the bravest of travellers can make it to this desert. The natural wonder is buried deep in pathless woods and seemingly impassable swamps.
In this programme RTD unveils the distinctive dunes of Russia’s permafrost and steppes, discovers how they emerged and what needs to be done to protect nature.

Ancient Underground City found in Russia 2017
Hi Guys this is the story of adventurous geologists who had trekked far into the cold wildernesses of Russia, in an effort to catalogue the largest megalithic site on earth. so remote, they are steeped in legends of snow yetis and mysterious monsters devouring all who dare to venture into these remote areas.
With strange occurrences such as that of the “die-atlov” pass, which have supported such fears for many years.
When I shared the amazing images of these stoned structures, many argued that they were natural formations, maybe because they struggled to conceive such enormous ancient ruins in such remote places. discoveries that seem to be many hundreds of thousands of years old.
Maybe even as old as the great sphinx.

Externsteine, Detmold -Germany (amazing natural rock formation)
The Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] are a distinctive rock formation located in the district of Lippe within the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, not far from the city of Detmold at Horn-Bad Meinberg. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. The name probably means star stones of the Egge, stern meaning star, steine meaning stones, and Egge meaning ridge.
The Externsteine belong to the Teutoburger Wald and are a natural outcropping of five sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is 37.5 m (123 ft) high and form a wall of several hundred metres in length, in a region that is otherwise largely devoid of rocks. The pillars have been modified and decorated by humans over the centuries.[1]
The geological formation consists of a hard, erosion-resistant sandstone, laid down during the early Cretaceous era about 120 million years ago, near the edge of a large shallow sea that covered large parts of Northern Europe at the time. About 70 million years ago, these originally horizontal layers were folded to an almost vertical position; this was followed by various forms of weathering.
Major Natural Curiosities - E2- Part 5
One of the natural wonders of Europe
Europe is, conventionally, one of the world's seven continents. Geographically, it is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia. Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, and by the Caucasus Mountains to the southeast. Europe is washed upon to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the Black Sea and the waterways connecting it to the Mediterranean. Europe's north, south and west geographic borders are clearly defined. One of its precise eastern limits is Bosporus, but it is not fully clear as to the rest of its exact geographical eastern limit. The caucasus mountains are most likely the rest of its eastern limit.
Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731,000,000 or about 11% of the world's population; however, according to the United Nations, Europe's share will fall to 7% in 2050, numbering 653,000,000.
Europe is the birthplace of Western culture. European nations played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of Colonialism. By the 17th and 18th centuries, European nations controlled most of Africa, the Americas, and large portions of Asia. World War I and World War II led to a decline in European dominance in world affairs as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. The Cold War between those two superpowers divided Europe along the Iron Curtain. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

in ENGLISH CC - екскурсія по Києву - Kyiv Tour - Киев KIEV Київ Ukraine
экскурсовод Ирина Алексеевна
Legend has it that three Slavic brothers and their sister founded Kyiv. The eldest, Kyi, gave the city its name. The names of brothers Shchek, Khoriv and sister Lybid now appear in its topography. An iconic statue of the four siblings - the Foundation of Kyiv Monument - stands on the banks of the Dnipro River.
In 989 Kyivan ruler Volodymyr decided to forge a closer alliance with Constantinople, marrying the emperor's daughter and adopt-ing Orthodox Christianity. Kyiv’s pagan idols were destroyed and its people were driven into the Dnipro for a mass baptism - an event still commemorated during Epiphany. (Eastern churches, following the Julian rather than the Gregorian calendar, have celebrated Epiphany (or Theophany) in conjunction with Christ's baptism by John the Baptist and celebrated it on January 19.)
In 1240 Mongol raiders sacked Kyiv.
The city shrank to the riverside district of Podil, which remained its center for centuries. Only when Ukraine formally passed into Russian hands at the end of the 18th century did Kyiv again grow in importance, as tsar-ist policies encouraged Russian immigration. The city went through an enormous boom at the tum of the 20th century because of an upsurge in nearby sugar milling. Many new mansions were erected at this time, including the remarkable House of Chimeras.
Kyiv’s modern centre and old city are on the Dnipro River’s west bank - called the ‘right bank’ because it’s on the right as you travel down the river. If you were to sail downstream into Kyiv from the north, your first port of cali on the right bank would be Podil, which sits below the rest of the city on the river plain. Continuing south, the woodsy, park-covered hills of the Pechersk district rise up from the river, ex-tending south to Kyiv’s main attraction, the Kievo-Pecherska Lavra.
The commercial heart of modern-day Kyiv -vul Khreshchatyk and maydan Nezalezhnosti (Independence square) - is above Podil and the river, west of Pechersks hills. The cit/s ancient centre, located around Zoloti Vorota and St Sophia’s Cathedral, is perched on a long hill overlooking, and running parallel to, vul Khreshchatyk.
