Japan's Grand Sumo Champion.... Bull.
A unique twist on Japan's national sport of sumo.
No swords, no blood, no matador with capes. Tōgyū a.k.a. suhi-zumo or bull sumo, is bull vs bull, with their human handlers little more than cheerleaders shouting encouragement. The horns are blunted and the fight is immediately ended if one accidentally gores the other.
It originated in Okinawa, though it has since spread to other regions. It is gradually dying out, with Uwajima on Shikoku is one of the last places you can reliably find it.
The bulls are led around the ring, and then encouraged to lock horns and push. Round sometimes last for an hour or more. It ends when one turns tail and runs. Like NASCAR, this is the most exciting moment as the handlers chase these one-ton behemoths around the ring, trying to slow them down enough to get a rope through their noses.
Secret Bull Sumo Watching tip: Most bulls are black and, to the uninitiated, look identical. Each one has a tiny colored ribbon tied around its tail to help tell them apart.

Spot1:Dogo Onsen
Once you step off the tram into the retro hot spring town, it's like you've stepped into another world. Relax at Dogo Onsen, Japan's oldest hot spring with a history of about 3000 years. The Dogo Onsen Main Building, that has been designated by the government as an important cultural property, is a must-see site.
While the hot spring town is small, the ambiance is extraordinary. After a relaxing time at the hot spring, enjoy shopping, local gourmet, and a visit to a museum.
Spot2:Matsuyama Castle
Matsuyama Castle is one of the few castles in Japan that were built before the Edo period and still maintain their original appearance. The valiant figure takes you back to the era of the Samurai. Inside the castle, weapons and various handcrafts of the time are on display.
Matsuyama Castle is located at the summit of Mount Katsuyama and when you take the rope-way or the lift to the top, you'll get a panoramic view of the beautiful town and Seto Inland Sea. Also, beautiful cherry blossoms can be seen in full bloom in Spring.
Spot3:Uchiko Town
Uchiko, located 30 minutes from Matusyama, is a retro town that is reminiscent of the time from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji period. This town flourished due to its wax production in the Edo period.
Take a tour of the luxurious buildings built by the then successful merchants and eat at one of the restaurants as you walk through the town. Get a taste of the ancient mass entertainment at Uchiko-za, a Kabuki theater built over 100 years ago.
Spot3:Garyu Mountain Villa
Garyu Mountain Villa was built on the cliffs of the Hiji river. The traditional Japanese Sukiya-zukuri style building has an attractive tea room inside that reflects Japan's philosophical ideas.
The garden is also beautiful and encompasses the surrounding mountains, forests, and the Hiji river. If you are interested in Japanese architecture and gardens, make sure to stop by.
Food:Tai-meshi (Sea Bream Rice)
Ehime's most famous dish, Tai-meshi (sea bream rice) is available in two different varieties. Hojo Tai-meshi in which the sea bream is boiled together with rice, and Uwajima Tai-meshi where the rice is topped with Sashimi. This time we'll introduce Uwajima Tai-meshi. Sea bream Sashimi marinated in a special sauce is mixed with spices and placed on top of piping hot rice. Try this fisherman's meal and fill your mouth with the delicious flavors of the sea bream.

Uwajima Castle (宇和島城, Uwajimajō) is one of only twelve original castles that survive intact from the Edo Period (1603-1867). The small but atmospheric castle was built around the turn of the 17th century and was later furbished up when the Date family took over ownership in 1615. The Date clan continued to rule Uwajima from Uwajima Castle through the Edo Period. The castle stands on a hill which was located just by the sea in the past, but land reclamation along the coast has resulted in it standing further inland today.
Visitors can approach the castle's keep starting from the north or south. The each route travel uphill on flights of stone steps meandering past moss covered stone walls and leading through the forest, which consists of an interesting variety of vegetation. About halfway up the hill along the northern approach stands the Yamazato Soko(山里倉庫), a storehouse built relatively recently in 1845. The structure now serves as a small museum, exhibiting festival props, craft tools, an old rickshaw and other items.
After a 10-15 minute climb, visitors will reach the castle's three storied main keep at the hill's flat-topped summit. The keep's genuine wooden interior is well-preserved, and climbing up two floors worth of steep wooden stairs to the top floor rewards visitors with nice views over Uwajima City. There are some exhibits within the main keep, such as armors and swords belonging to past feudal lords, besides portraits of them.

The northern trailhead to Uwajima Castle can be reached in a 10-15 minute walk from Uwajima Station. From there, it takes an additional 10-15 minutes to climb up the hill and get to the main keep.
