Exclusive (Emmy Award) video shot by Mike Theiss from ground zero of Hurricane Katrina's historic 28 foot storm surge that ripped through Gulfport, Mississippi on August 29th, 2005. This video has a time stamp to give a complete and accurate timeline from the Holiday Inn beachfront hotel located directly on the beach in Gulfport. Also, included are shots from the Theiss-Device which is a camera housing designed by Mike to be placed in a place that would be too dangerous from any human to survive. This 13 minute video will give you a sense of just how bad Katrina was on the Gulf Coast without actually putting you in harms way !!!

Located inside Kisatchie National Forest, Winn district. We were not alone here, but felt very secluded. This campground has sites with picnic tables, lantern posts, and fire rings. The grounds are hilly and has great small trails throughout. The gum springs body of water has large trees across small parts of water allowing the boys to test their balance skills. They had so much fun running up and down the hills and through the trees. We really liked this place. There are bathrooms on one side of the loop.
The Winn Ranger Station is next to campground.
The Gum Springs Campground is located in an area of hilly terrain and natural springs. Gum Springs Recreation Complex exhibits recreation design and construction from the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the 1930's. Gum Springs campground offers basic recreation opportunities of picnicking and camping and is close to Gum Springs Horse Camp and Trail.

Kisatchie Falls, Kisatchie National Forest, Louisiana

The book, The Bottle Tree by Robert D. Bennett, is set in a turpentine camp that really did exist in the Kisatchie National Forest not far from Natchitoches, Louisiana. My grandfather lived in the camp when he was a child and the idea for the book was based on stories I heard from him and my great-aunt. More info at
