12 Things NOT To Do in Iraq
# 12 Things NOT To Do in Iraq
By:
Iraq is a lovely place.
So know these 12 Things NOT to Do, before you go!
1. Try Not to stand out
Rather than driving fast, surrounded by bodyguards try to blend in as much as possible. Women should dress in local fashion and men should grow out their facial hair.
2. Don't Step On Bread!
Bread is a highly treasured food in Iraq. If you happen across a fallen hunk in the street don't step on it or touch it with your feet!
3. Don't Visit the Borders.
Don't travel near the Syrian, Turkish, or Iranian borders. You may encounter large refugee flows.
4. Don't Bring Bad Luck.
When Iraqis buy a new appliance they will crack an egg over it to wash away any bad luck! Iraqis are very superstitious.
5. Don't Get Jumpy!
You often may see a group of Iraqis shouting and firing rifles. But it's just a traditional way of celebrating a wedding or event. Each tribe has a different song.
6. Don't Bring Bad Luck!
If an Iraqi buys a new car, he may sacrifice a rooster for good luck. If it's a new house he may sacrifice a lamb!
7. Don't Leave the Safe Zones.
Generally speaking, southern Iraq is safer than the Sunni Triangle, and a traveler must be particularly careful in Baghdad, where there are some highly dangerous neighborhoods.
8. DON'T BRING BAD LUCK!
Don't be surprised to find an old shoe hanging in a new house! Iraqis are VERY superstitious!
9. Don't Forget Shots!
The CDC recommends travelers get Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines as you can get these diseases through contaminated food or water in Iraq.
10. Don't Compliment Children!
Don't tell an Iraqi how well-behaved or handsome their child is. They believe this could jinx them with The Evil Eye.
11. Don't Eat Around!
In many places you may find yourself eating from a communal dish. In this case only take the portion that's directly in front of you.
12. Don't Eat with Your Left Hand!
According to the Prophet Muhammad, you should only use your right hand. The left hand is reserved for other things...
Now you can enjoy your stay in this stunningly beautiful and diverse country!

1) Our first impressions of Helsinki included wandering around the city and sampling some Finnish street food in the form of a do it yourself picnic we had on a pedestrian bench.
2) As a day trip we left the urban center of Helsinki via ferry for a wander around quaint Suomenlinna island where we sat down to enjoy ice cream - I tried the Salmiakki flavored one.
3) On a dare I had the opportunity to sample Salmiakki, a black licorice that is popular in Finland and other Scandinavian countries. As a big fan of licorice, I liked it instantly whereas Audrey spat it out immediately.
4) During our stay in Dalsbruk we had the chance to participate in some adventure sports including Sea Kayaking are the Archipelago passing by islands in Kimito where we had a chance to spot wildlife.
5) From Kasnas we took a speed boat to visit Rosala - home to a Viking Center - and from there we continued on to check out Bengtskär Lighthouse.
6) While listening to some great live 70's music we had an opportunity to sample three different kinds of Finnish beer while eating reindeer meat.
7) Having a chance to properly explore Helsinki was a must for both of us. One of the highlights of wandering around the city centre was having a chance to see some of the impressive architecture including Uspenski Cathedral while eating salmon and reindeer meatballs by the Harbor market.
8) During our time in the Finnish Archipelago we were based in the town of Dalsbruk (Swedish name) also called Taalintehdas (Finnish name) a small town home to mostly Swedish speakers also fluent in Finnish.
9) Finally, no trip of ours would be complete without keying in on the local cuisine. Before we left Taalintehdas we check out a super market where we spotted Finnish snacks such as Fazer chocolate, Finnish beer, salmon, Salmiakki, rye bread and more. We're certainly going to miss Finnish cuisine.
This is part of our Travel in Finland series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Finnish culture, Finnish arts, Finnish foods, Finnish religion and Finnish people.

Voyage to Tangier Island, Virginia
My first voyage to Tangier Island, Virginia. It is a remote island in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay, fourteen miles from mainland Virginia. Its highest elevation is only four feet above sea level, so it is very difficult to see from a distance. The island has a population of about 500, most of whom are related to the original settlers from 400 years ago. Due to their geographic isolation, they possess a very distinct accent. Linguists say it resembles the early English colonists to North America, and therefore it has great outside interest in academia. Unfortunately, due to rising sea levels and erosion, the island is at risk of total abandonment by the population. 2/3 of the island has already eroded, and the erosion is accelerating. Estimates are 25-50 years that the island could require residents to evacuate to the mainland.
Interestingly, two days after I made this voyage to Tangier Island, President Donald Trump called the mayor of this tiny island, making headlines around the country. His purpose was to thank the town for their support (around 90% of the population voted for Trump in 2016), as well as to assure them that, and I paraphrase, climate-change is not affecting your island. The island has been there for a long time and will remain there for many years to come.
For part of the voyage in my tiny boat, I was surrounded by water on the horizon. I thought I'd at least see the water tower from the mainland, but this turned out to not be so.
I saw crabs, many fish, jellyfish and even dolphins near my boat on this trip. I made this video to commemorate this experience if others were interested in making a similar trip (as I could find little similar videos on the experience traversing across the Chesapeake Bay).
