In July 2018, our family spent two weeks on a whirlwind trip across China. We flew into Shanghai and traveled to Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. We visited the Great Wall, saw amazing acrobats and adorable pandas, marveled at the Terra Cotta Warriors, and drank in the tranquil rural landscapes. Along the way we also crossed two parks off of our Every Disney Park bucket list. Watch in HD!

Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province, China. A sub-provincial city on the Guanzhong Plain in northwestern China,[4] it is one of the oldest cities in China, and the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals, having held the position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history,[5] including Western Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Sui, and Tang.[5] Xi'an is the starting point of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.[6]
Since the 1990s, as part of the economic revival of inland China especially for the central and northwest regions, the city of Xi'an has re-emerged as an important cultural, industrial and educational centre of the central-northwest region, with facilities for research and development, national security and space exploration. Xi'an currently holds sub-provincial status, administering 9 districts and 4 counties.[7] As of 2018 Xi'an has a population of 12,005,600, and the Xi'an-Xianyang metropolitan area a population of 12.9 million.[3] It is the most populous city in Northwest China, as well as one of the three most populous cities in Western China, the other two are Chongqing and Chengdu.[8] In 2012, it was named as one of the 13 emerging megacities, or megalopolises, in China

China Tourism - Ancient Fenghuang town
Ancient Fenghuang, a village in central China, used to be a frontier town, separating the Han civilization from the Miao and Dong minorities. It was an important regional center for trade and cultural exchange.
The riverside setting of the village, with its wooden stilt houses and narrow mysterious back alleys, makes it one of the most attractive places in the region.
These days, it has become a major tourist destination. While some traditions remain, much of the town has been set up to cater for the influx of new visitors, in some ways changing the face of the village beyond recognition.
Either way, Fenghuang provides an interesting glimpse of the many challenges and contrasts that exist in China today.

The best views in Yangshuo are accessible from the town centre, but it's a pretty long climb up to the top of a mountain. We followed the instructions on how to get there by ILP Blog, a really good article. Remember to bring 10 Yuan per person:

This is where you'll spend most of your time and where you will find the famous bamboo rafts that you've seen on Instagram. We rented bicycles to get around, but some people rent mopeds/motorbikes instead. You're going to want the freedom of your own transport.

Xi'an, China
Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province, People's Republic of China. In 202 BC, the founding emperor Liu Bang of the Han dynasty established his capital in Chang'an County; his first palace, Changle Palace (長樂宮, Perpetual Happiness) was built across the river from the ruin of the Qin capital. This is traditionally regarded as the founding date of Chang'an. Two years later, Liu Bang built Weiyang Palace (未央宮, Not-Yet-Halfway Palace) north of modern Xi'an. Weiyang Palace was the largest palace ever built on Earth, covering 4.8 square kilometres (1,200 acres), which is 6.7 times the size of the current Forbidden City and 11 times the size of the Vatican City.[21] The original Xi'an city wall was started in 194 BC and took 4 years to finish. Upon completion, the wall measured 25.7 km (15.97 mi) in length and 12 to 16 m (39.37–52.49 ft) in thickness at the base, enclosing an area of 36 km2 (13.90 sq mi). In the year 190, amidst uprisings and rebellions just prior to the Three Kingdoms Period, a powerful warlord named Dong Zhuo moved the court from Luoyang to Chang'an in a bid to avoid a coalition of other powerful warlords against him.
Following several hundred years of unrest, the Sui dynasty united China again in 582. The emperor of Sui ordered a new capital to be built southeast of the Han capital, called Daxing. It consisted of three sections: the Imperial City, the palace section, and the civilian section, with a total area of 84 km2 (32 sq mi) within the city walls. At the time, it was the largest city in the world. The city was renamed Chang'an by the Tang Dynasty.[22] In the mid-7th century, after returning from his pilgrimage to India, the Buddhist monk Xuanzang established a translation centre for Sanskrit scriptures.
Construction of the Great Wild Goose Pagoda began in 652. This pagoda was 64 m (209.97 ft) in height, and was built to store the translations of Buddhist sutras obtained from India by Xuanzang. In 707, construction of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda began. This pagoda measured 45 m (147.64 ft) tall at the time of completion, and was built to store the translations of Buddhist sutras by Yijing. The massive 1556 Shaanxi earthquake eventually damaged the tower and reduced its height to 43.4 m (142.39 ft).[23]
Chang'an was devastated at the end of the Tang dynasty in 904. Residents were forced to move to the new capital city in Luoyang. Only a small area in the city continued to be occupied thereafter. During the Ming dynasty, a new wall was constructed in 1370 and remains intact to this day. The wall measures 11.9 km (7.4 mi) in circumference, 12 m (39.37 ft) in height, and 15 to 18 m (49.21–59.06 ft) in thickness at the base; a moat was also built outside the walls. The new wall and moat would protect a much smaller city of 12 km2 (4.6 sq mi).
Pingyao 平遥 The Eternal City, China
Pingyao dates back 2,700 years, and is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. During the Qing Dynasty this city was a financial center of China. It is still inhabited by 50,000 residents and is renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Pingyao still retains its city layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming to a typical Ba gua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city have ancient ruins. Preserved Ming- and Qing-style residences number close to 4,000. The streets and storefronts still largely retain their historical appearance.
The city walls of Pingyao were constructed in the 3rd year of the Hongwu Emperor (1370). The walls have six barbican gates. The north and south sides have one gate each. The east and west sides have two gates each.
This pattern is similar to that of a turtle (the head, tail and four legs), earning Pingyao the moniker Turtle City. The walls measure about 12 metres high, with a perimeter of 6,000 metres. A 4-metre wide, 4-metre deep moat can be found just outside the walls. Aside from the four structured towers at the four corners, there are also 72 watchtowers and more than 3,000 battlements.
