Gillingham is a town in the county of Kent in South East England. For local government purposes Gillingham is also in the unitary authority of Medway. Gillingham includes the settlements of Brompton, Hempstead, Wigmore, Parkwood, Rainham, Rainham Mark and Twydall.
Gillingham means a homestead of Gylla's family, from Old English ham (village, homestead) and ingas (family, followers), and was first recorded in the 10th century as Gyllingeham. Also referred to in old texts as Jillyingham Water, hence the pronunciation being Gillingham (the G sounds as a J as in the girls' name Jill).
The Municipal Buildings in Canterbury Street were built as council offices for Gillingham Borough Council. They were opened by the Lord Mayor of London, Sir George Broadbridge, on 25 September 1937. The Lord Mayor was received at Gillingham Railway Station by a guard of honour of boys of HMS Arethusa. When Gillingham Borough Council merged with Rochester upon Medway to form the unitary Medway Authority in 1998, the buildings were still used as council offices and for meetings for several years afterwards.
The town of Gillingham grew along the road from Brompton on the great lines (military barracks), to the railway station. As such it was a linear development. Close by was the road along the shore line, linking The Strand, and the tiny village of Gillingham Green. Later, communiites developed along the top road- Watling street – turnpike linking Chatham with Dover. All these communities merged into the town that is called today Gillingham.
The main source of employment was at Chatham Dockyard, two-thirds of which lay within the boundaries of Gillingham. When it ceased to be a naval base in 1984, there was significant unemployment. A World Heritage Site application is today planned for the Dockyard and its defences.
The Roman road now known as Watling Street passed through Gillingham . The London, Chatham and Dover Railway opened its line between Chatham and Faversham on 25 January 1858; and a country station was opened here called New Brompton. This was to serve the dockyard labourers' homes that had sprung up during the Napoleonic Wars. A branch line led into the dockyard. The station later became Gillingham Railway Station.

Time Out Country Walks, Book 1, Walk 26, Great Shelford to Cambridge. 26/5/12.
This book 1 walk of around 12.7 miles (though I suspect a bit more when the Cambridge 'tour' is added) is unusual in the sense that it requires 'permission' to do; well, at least the more scenic version does. So, as permission was granted today, and the weather fantastic, I took the opportunity to do the walk.
The walk is possible without 'permission', but this entails a fair bit of road walking early on, and there's enough of that later in the walk anyway, so it's a much better walk if the permission is sought. Soon after leaving Shelford station, the walker passes the village church and is then crossing the private university fields and alongside The River Cam.
This leads out to Hauxton Church, with a further bit of road walking prior to crossing fields into Haslingfield for lunch.
Thereafter, the walk follows a quiet 'B' road before passing 'The Travelling Telescope' and crossing more fields into Grantchester. Here, the walk becomes busier, and more touristy as it passes through the orchard of a very famous tea stop and then follows the banks of The Cam into the city. Then, particularly on a sunny day like today, there's more throngs in the city itself prior to returning to the station for the journey home.
The best part of this walk, in my opinion, is the morning section as urban walking and crowds are not my cup-of-tea. Otherwise, if done on a week day, out of term, the section from Grantchester could also be nice. Either ways, getting the permission to cross the private track is definitely worthwhile!

-House of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Mount Buzludzha, Bulgaria: Used as the soviet congress room in the past, it was one of the biggest ideological monuments in Bulgaria during the communist period.
-Pripyat city, Ukraine: Residence of Chernobil Nuclear Central workers, it was abandoned after its nuclear accident.
-Angkor Wat temple, Angkor, Cambodia: Best preserved ruins of one of the most important temples of the ancient Jemer Empire.

A Walk in the British Countryside
Walking is something to be enjoyed. It is not boring and it is not a hobby for the elderly, as I've proved here. Besides providing an interesting way to keep fit, you see Britain at its best with fascinating insights into the countryside, its wildlife, scenery and of course its crazy rock graffiti.
Halling to Maidstone 10 Mile Walk (along the Medway)
In this episode, I walk and get wet on a 10 mile walk from Halling to Maidstone (Kent) along the River Medway. Part of the Medway Valley Walk, with the new(ish) section from Aylesford towards Allington Lock which now follows the river.
Pretty much 98% flat and only limited navigation skill required, it's a very easy walk that most people could achieve. 4 to 5 hours max with stops or slightly longer if you do more than one pub ;)
