Combatribes (The), 1990 Technos Japan (20 From '90 Part 5)
Brutal, bloody and undeniably fun beat-em-up taking place in numerous New York locations. Up to 3 players can participate in this ballet of brutality as 3 fighters-- Beserker (medium speed/strength), Bullova (strongest but slow), and Blitz (fast but weak)-- can take to the streets to clean up gangs and their bosses. The first level takes place at Times Square, where a motorcycle gang and their fat boss with a 2X4 menace you. The amount of moves you can utilize to make your opponents one with the pavement are so numerous it's hard to keep track of them or remember how to pull them off! They include: Run/knock down (2x left or right to run [or punch/kick together], attack button in mid-air), grab & throw (get close enough to enemy to grab, then press attack button to throw), leg swing (stand on downed enemy's feet and press punch), gut kick (stand at enemy's feet and press kick), double face smash (attack enemy in front of you while enemy comes from behind), and face smash (press down and punch while standing over a downed enemy's head). Such great, brutal attacks rarely seen in video game beat em ups at this point! The bosses take off a HELL of a lot more damage than the fodder enemies-- as long as they have a weapon. If you knock 'em around enough you'll force them to lose it and make them much weaker. However, they won't let you attack them when they're down or grab them. Side note: don't forget to use any items you can grab and throw to your advantage (like go-carts, pinball machines, motorcycles, etc.)! The stages are a total of 6: 1) Times Square motorcycle gang hangout, 2) Coney Island amusement park with circus clowns, 3) A roller rink/Dance club with skating hoodlums, 4) Baseball stadium (maybe Shea or Yankee Stadium?), 5) A high-rise military building, 6) New York Harbot, where you face all the previous enemies (though thankfully, not the annoying skaters) and bosses, and what appears to be the final boss of the game gets killed by a robot woman! You then face her (called Martha Splatterhead!) and end the game upon her defeat. Quite the quarter-eater in its day, due to replenishing your life meter (which depletes rapidly) with additional credits. Smash away, Combatribes!
