Sunflower Festival in Kitanakagusuku 2014 (4)
ひまわりIN北中城2014
Each year in January, Okinawa has the earliest cherry blossoms in Japan. The island has many locations to view the beautiful pink Sakura blossoms. However, also during this time, the village of Kitanakagusuku in central Okinawa transforms some fields into a yellow wonderland of sunflowers (ひまわり; himawari).
Usually seen in summertime, these large bright flowers on tall green stalks are spectacular in the sunshine. However, even on cloudy days (such as seen in this video), the sunflowers are still a surprisingly cheerful display to the many visitors.
These picturesque fields are more than 10,000 square meters and are ablaze with some 400,000 sunflower blossoms. It has become a popular destination for taking pictures and for simply enjoying the splendor of the floral display from late January into early February.
The fields are located in the Adaniya neighborhood of the village: Map coordinates: 26.297359,127.796241
The reason that the sunflowers were originally planted was to provide soil stability during idle periods between cultivation of other crops. Initially started for this purpose, the flowers unexpectedly became popular with many people. The village decided to hold an annual festival as part of revitalization efforts. 2014 was the sixth year for this festival.
