You can get to Tottori easily via direct flights from Tokyo(Haneda or Narita Airport), direct buses depart from all over Japan's major cities and of course you can take the limited express train (Super Hakuta) from many areas such as Kyoto and Osaka.

TOTTORI SAND DUNES | JAPAN TRAVEL VLOG #GOLDENWEEK2018
We just finished our Golden Week holiday and my friends and I took a road trip out to Tottori! I really should have stayed home because I'm broke-phi-broke, but this was a rare time where everyone had no work and no plans. So we took it!
There is literally nothing at the Tottori Sand Dunes but it's a great place for photos and videos. I wouldn't suggesting it for picnics at the beach because the winds are INTENSE. But there are beaches all along the coast of Tottori that might be better for picnics (that whole area was really windy though...)
Tottori Service Area
The Air BnB we stayed at was in Yurihama-cho, about 1 hour from the sand dunes. It was small, and family-run, but they were very nice and lent us geta for us to wear.
