Britain's 10 most Scenic Rail Journeys
Please watch: The abandoned Eurostar

A generation ago, Britain's railways were almost consigned to history when Dr Beeching's cuts closed thousands of stations and lines across the country. But some gems survived, and now rail travel grows more popular by the day.
Scotland Fort William Boat Trip
Boat trip around Fort William bay at the foot of Ben Nevis Mountain range..
2015 British Isles Trip
Family of five trip to the British Isles in 2015, September.
DAY 1: Landed at Gatwick midday. Spent the afternoon sight seeing and walking around London.
DAY 2: Harry Potter tour in the morning, walking around London in the afternoon. Nearly recovered from jet lag.
DAY 3: Left London in the morning via train to Bournemouth. Picked up rental car and then drove to West Bay/Jurassic Coast (where Broadchurch was filmed). Drove to Taunton to stay the night.
DAY 4: Left Taunton to make our way to Cardiff for the Doctor Who Experience. On the way there we met a nice family crabbing at Clevedon Beach. Popped on by Clevedon Hall, then Chepstow Castle in Wales. After lunch, let the kids burn off energy in the Caerleon Roman Amphitheatre. Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay, and then checked out the celebration going on in Bay. Dinner and unexpected late night fireworks.
DAY 5: Walked to the other side of Cardiff for breakfast and exploring. Headed to Fishguard to drop off the car hire and catch a ferry to Ireland. Arrived, picked up new car hire, and checked into a hotel in Wexford. Travel day.
DAY 6: Drove toward Ennis where our hotel was and to see the Cliffs of Moher, our primary activity for that day.
DAY 7: Walked around Ennis in the morning looking at the sites like the Ennis Friary. Then drove towards Poulnabrone Dolmen. Stopped by the Caherconnell fort (caherconnell.com) and was amazed with the sheepdog demonstration. On to the Dolmen and the Burren. Afterwards headed to Dublin where we dropped off the car hire.
DAY 8: Woke up in Dublin and spent the day exploring the city on foot. Lots of different sites such as Dublinia, Christ Church Cathedral, Guinness and Jameson, Book of Kells, and let the kids get some playtime in at St. Patrick’s Park.
DAY 9: Still in Dublin for the morning. Played in St. Stephen’s Green before catching a train to Belfast. Switched to a local commuter train to take us to Larne where we stayed for the night.
DAY 10: Larne was an overnight stay to catch a ferry to Scotland. Arrived in Troone and then walked (AND walked!) to the local train station to take a train to Glasgow. Dropped our bags off at the hotel and then walked to the Glasgow Science Centre where the kids had a nice afternoon playing & learning.
DAY 11: Picked up our final car hire in Glasgow and then started to drive towards Fort William. On the way there we stopped at Doune Castle (who wouldn’t?!) and had a nice lunch in town. Kids are huge Monty Python fans and loved the tour. (Parents are also huge Outlander fans and loved it as well). The drive was fantastic. Stopped more than once just to take pictures. We stayed overnight in a lovely place in Ardgour.
DAY 12: Headed towards Fort William to do the Steall Gorge and Waterfall wall. The Scots are serious about their hill walks! After the walk, we headed towards the Isle of Skye. Stopped at Eileen Donan Castle to snap a quick pic before taking a walk at the Fairy Pools. Got a wee bit of Scottish weather that day! We did get some nice rainbows, however.
DAY 13: Left Portree to do the Quiraign Walk. Somehow we got off the designated path while trying to walk up the hill. Decided to follow everyone else and went until we reached a spot that was a bit too treacherous for our youngest. Maybe also our oldest (i.e. James). Took our time leaving Skye, making sure to stop at many sites along the way. Stopped at Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness on the way to Inverness. We were treated to an actual wedding that was going on that day.
DAY 14: First of a two night stay in Inverness. On the first day we had a private tour guide that took us to Clava Cairns, Culloden Moor, and Cawdor Castle and gardens. It was a very Outlander themed day!
DAY 15: Took the scenic route to Edinburgh through the Cairngorms Nation Park. Very lovely, if adventurous drive! Checked into our hotel and then spent the afternoon wondering around Edinburgh on foot. St. Giles’ Cathedral, Greyfriars Kirkyard, The Elephant House, and we explored some of Edinburgh Castle (among others!).
DAY 16: Explored Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat. The weather was great so we took our time on the walk. Even found some yummy wild berries to snack on. Left Edinburgh to head back to Glasgow. On the walk, we stopped to see the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel.
DAY 17: A bit of a travel day, we took the train to head back to London. Walked around and saw more sights in London that afternoon and evening. Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Piccadilly Circus among other attractions.
DAY 18: On our last day we met with family for lunch after a little more sight seeing. After that we took a train to the airport and headed back home via JFK.
UK ROAD TRIP: SCOTLAND - Hogwarts Express, Highland Cows & Harry Potter Tour in Edinburgh (Part 6)
Learn how to see the Hogwarts Express, also known as the Jacobite steam train, pass the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the description below.
We are back on the road and taking a 3 WEEK road trip through England, Scotland and Wales!
This will be a multi-part UK Road Trip series as we drive from London over to Wales, up to Scotland and back down again.
In Part 6 we traveled to Glenfinnan, Scotland to see the real-life Hogwarts Express cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct! Then, we went on a Coo Safari in Scotland’s Highlands! After spotting a few furry Highland cows, we made our way to Edinburgh. There, we went on a Harry Potter walking tour where we visited many places that were instrumental in influencing J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter books!
In Part 5, we made our way to Scotland for the first time, stopping in Glasgow and ending our video with a cheeky whisky tasting at the Oban Distillery in Oban, Scotland! We tasted and reviewed four Oban whiskeys, including the Oban Little Bay, Oban 14 Year Old, Oban Distiller’s Edition and the Oban Distillery Exclusive Bottling!
In Part 4, we explored Liverpool, the Lake District in England, including gorgeous Keswick, and magical standing stones as old as Stonehenge! We also ate some homemade gingerbread at the famous Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread shop, and hiked to the waterfall at Aira Force.
In Part 3, we explored the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Ironbridge, England! Then, we spent a few days exploring Northern Wales, including Conwy, Anglesey, Snowdonia National Park and Newborough Beach!
In Part 2, we explored the charming villages of the Cotswolds in England, Cardiff, Wales, and Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon, England!
In Part 1, we explored Bath, England and the mysterious, ancient site of Stonehenge. We also traveled to Glastonbury, England, which is known for its quirkiness and historic abbey ruins.

How to See the Hogwarts Express, aka Jacobite Train, cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct:
Step 1 – Reference this Google Maps walking route
(Note: there is free parking 200 meters NW of the Glenfinnan Monument Parking lot, where you turn right on A830, but you’ll need to get there early to get a space):
Step 2 – Check the dates & times the Jacobite train runs:
Step 3 – Plan ahead and arrive early!
The train passes the viaduct approximately 30 minutes after departing from Fort William station. The train will pass around 10:45am if departing from Fort William at 10:15am and pass around 3:10pm if leaving Fort William at 2:40pm. The walk from the parking lot will take you 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 4 – Find your favorite spot to view the train
When the train departs Fort William for Mallaig, it will be heading West. We recommend finding a spot on the far left (West) and South of the viaduct to get the best views. You’ll want to give yourself 15 minutes to find your favorite spot before the train arrives.
Step 5 – Capture the moment with photos and videos!
Final advice, plan to arrive at least one hour before the train passes the viaduct to give you plenty of time to secure a parking space, walk to the viaduct and locate your favorite position to watch the train.

Five-Day Motorcycle Tour in Scotland 2018
2018 five-day Scotland tour is complete. Here’s a summary:
Day 1: North London home to Helvellyn YHA 352 miles
Day 2: Helvellyn YHA to Glen Nevis YHA, 255 miles
Day 3: Glen Nevis YHA to John O’Groats to Durness Smoo YHA (330 miles)
Day 4: Durness Smoo YHA to Tobermory YHA (Isle of Mull) (335 miles)
Day 5: Tobermory YHA to North London home (530 miles, 11 by sea)
Total miles was 1776. Overnights in hostels cost from £15 for a shared room to £60 for a private room en suite, with breakfast costing £4.5 to £5.5. I booked them all months ago, and was only in a shared room at Durness Smoo. Only day with real rain was Day 5, with light mist for the first third, then nothing for middle third, then heavy thundershowers on and off on final third.
Biggest surprise and challenge was the rock road up to Helvellyn YHA, which the KTM dispatched without a second thought. Best lunch break was Mountain Coffee Company in Gairloch, on the west coast. Best overnight was with 10 other bikers (by chance) in the former radar shacks at Durness Smoo. Best dinner was at a waterfront hotel in Tobermory.
Best post-ride exercise was 2 hour hike up the base climbs of Ben Nevis. All of the hostels had super friendly staff. None had particularly secure bike parking (I was just on the waterfront street in Tobermory), so it was worth having both Abus disc lock and heavy-ish chain for rear wheel along.
Video below has maps and highlights from each day. This is my third time doing this general loop, with some experiments each year. I will likely do it again next year. I normally do it in six days, but family opportunities had me back a day early by doing the long fifth day from Tobermory to home. Sorry the video is longish— but lots of things should happen on a bike tour if you can do only one five-day tour a year!
I am a cheap traveler (EXPLORING SCOTLAND)
Today on our Scotland road trip we are exploring Glen Coe, Scotland in the Scottish highlands. This is an amazing place to go on light to moderate hikes, explore a few waterfalls, and stop for a bite to eat and a pint at the Clachaig Inn to finish the day. Scotland is not the cheapest country to travel around, so we are budgeting our trip and staying at cheaper airbnbs, grocery shopping, and sharing meals.
Fun fact: Braveheart and James Bond's Skyfall were both filmed in Glen Coe

Explore Scotland, The Best Places to Visit in Scotland
At first glance, the Scottish landscape is harsh: foreboding fortresses atop hills and cliffs, the desolate moors . . . But spend some time here and you’ll quickly realize Scotland has its own unique beauty: breathtaking highlands just made for hiking and strolling, craggy coastlines, monuments that are proud reminders of long-ago battles, and blue lakes and rivers just made for fishing. Scotland is a land of legends and romance, from Robert the Bruce and Macbeth to lake monsters and the tragic Mary Queen of Scots. And, yes, real men do wear skirts here. Scotland Travel: Blair Castle
Scotland Travel: Blair Castle.
The oldest part of the castle is the six-storey Cummings or Comyn's Tower, which may retain some 13th-century fabric, though it was largely built in the 15th century. The extensions which now form the central part of the castle were first added in the 16th century. The apartments to the south were added in the mid-18th century to designs by architects John Douglas and James Winter. The south-east range, incorporating the clock tower, was rebuilt by Archibald Elliot after a fire in 1814. Finally, the castle arrived at its present form in the 1870s, when David Bryce remodelled the whole building in a Scots Baronial style, and added the ballroom.[1]
The castle has been open to the public since 1936. Its many rooms feature important collections of weapons, hunting trophies, souvenirs of the Murray clan, ethnographica, paintings, furniture, and needlework collected by the Murray family over many generations.[10]
The castle also provides the garrison for the Atholl Highlanders, the private army of the Duke of Atholl, noted as the only legal private army in Europe. The Castle and the Atholl Estates were used in the 2008 reality television series Conquer the Castle.
In 2009, a Grand Fir (Abies grandis) in Diana's Grove in the grounds of the castle, was measured at 62.7 metres (206 ft), and declared the second-tallest tree in Britain.[11]

The famous Harry Potter Bridge - Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland
Travel video of my previous trip to Scotland.
In this video will specifically focus on Glenfinnan Viaduct location. The famous scene in the Harry Potter movies. We departed from our apartment in Fort William early morning and reached Glenfinnan before noon. The weather was not so good, it was raining the whole day since we arrived there.

For your information, you can't fly a drone here in Glenfinnan as it's under private property. I've managed to contact the landlord who manages the property there and asked for his permission. With a little contribution to him (Christmas token) I can fly my drone there without worried. LOL
The rain was quite heavy to fly a drone, but since I was already there and I don't know when I can come back to this place plus I already have the permission I made my decision to flew my drone regardless heavy rain. Luckily my drone was OK and I managed to capture some awesome footages here in Glenfinnan. The only problem, I was hoping for the Hogwarts train passing by but it just didn't turn up so I didn't get the perfect shot as I wanted.

Scotland Tour: British Commandos Memorial in the Scottish Highlands
In World War II, Winston Churchill decided that Britain needed an elite military corps. He created the British Commandos, famous for wearing green berets (an accessory — and name — later borrowed by elite fighting forces in the US and other countries). Those troops trained in the windy shadow of Ben Nevis (the tallest mountain in Britain, at 4,409 feet). Many of them died in combat, and this bronze memorial — built in 1952 — remembers those fallen British heroes. Nearby is a second memorial honoring other British Commandos who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a touching reminder that the USA is not alone in its distant wars; every nation has its share of honored heroes willing to sacrifice for what they believe to be the greater good. (Sorry about the wind buffeting on the mic as you watch the video.)
All over Europe, war memorials are poignant reminders of fallen heroes. Which do you find most impactful?
