64 Foot Wave - Mike Parsons At Jaws Beach, Hawaii
Mike Parsons (born March 13, 1965, in California) is an american professional surfer and surfing coach.
Parsons was raised in Laguna Beach, California and began surfing when he was six-years-old. In 1983, he earned second place in the Junior Division of the United States Surfing Championships.
In 2001, Parsons was towed into a 66-foot wave at Cortes Bank, CA, for which he was awarded $66,000 the highest prize ever awarded in the history of professional surfing. This money was awarded by the Billabong XXL competition which paid tribute to the biggest waves ridden each year. Parsons also surfed a 64-foot wave during competition at the Jaws break on the north shore of Maui. It was filmed by helicopter and used as the opening scene of the 2003 film Billabong Odyssey. A usually uncredited clip of this sequence has gone on to become a viral video, attributed to a number of different surfers, locations, and in many cases, a Tsunami.
Parsons later broke his record on January 5, 2008, at Cortes Bank, when he was photographed surfing a wave that the Billabong XXL judged to be 77 feet, which put him in the Guinness Book of World Records, officially, for biggest wave ever surfed. Nearly 4 years later Garrett McNamara improved on this record with a 78-foot wave off Nazaré, Portugal on November 1, 2011.
In 2011, Parsons became the full-time coach for surfer Kolohe Andino.
On January 20, 2013, Parsons suffered a broken C7 vertebra in his neck and nearly drowned while surfing triple-overhead surf at Ocean Beach, a beach break in San Francisco, California. Parsons was able to return to surfing four months later.
Parsons was inducted into the Surfer's Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, California in 2008.

The Big Island of Hawaii
The Big Island is the youngest Island of Hawaii, twice the size of all the other major Islands combined, covering over 4,000 square miles.
There are Twelve distinct climate zones, ranging from East Hawaii’s tropical rain forests to Mauna Kea’s frozen tundra
The Kona Coast lies immediately next to a huge ocean drop-off which descends thousands of feet to the ocean bottom. Kona is the home of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Wether fishing from charter boats or piers, Kona gets fishermen hooked.
The Big Island, with her Crystal clear blue waters reveals a plethora of fish, sea turtles, dolphins and manta rays. Many snorkeling and scuba expeditions are open to every level of expertise. A unique experience for the advanced scuba diver is to swim into underwater lava tubes where eels, octopus and lobsters may be discovered.
The coffee plant was brought to Kona in 1828 by Samuel Ruggles. Today Kona coffee is one of the most expensive and prized coffees in the world.
Volcano is a subtropical highland community bordering Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is near the active volcano Kilauea.
Kilauea Caldera is the longest continuously erupting volcano in the world, its present eruptive phase dates back to 1983
Driving over the new saddle highway between the Mauna Loa and The Mauna Kea is impressive. The Mauna Kea is the tallest sea-mountain in the world and, if measured from the ocean bottom, is 4000 feet taller than Mt. Everest
Cafe Pesto first opened in Kawaihae harbor in 1988 and their popular pizzas caught on and they opened their second restaurant in Hilo in 1992.
Hilo is a peaceful city with an airport, orchid farms and the recently renovated Double Tree Grand Naniloa Hotel. It was also where, in 1946 a 56-foot tsunami swept into Hilo Bay and caused 159 deaths and tore apart downtown Hilo.
Hilo had a second devastating tsunami 14 years later which destroyed downtown again.
The Pacific Tsunami Museum has exhibits which show how tsunamis have actually shaped the appearance and development of Hilo.
Nearby is the Mokupapapa Discovery Museum which explains the region’s coral reef ecosystem. A stunning 2500 gallon sea water aquarium shows some of the local reef fish.
Hawi in North Kohala is known as the bicycle turnaround point for the Ironman Triathlon each October. But it is also know for Bamboo - a Restaurant, bar and store. One of the island’s oldest restaurants, the Pacific Rim menu with fresh island fish and organic local produce is ono (delicious). The store has Hawaiian handicrafts and one of the largest selections of Aloha shirts from Torrie Richards and Avanti on the island.
King Kamehameha, believed to have been born in the North Kohala area, conquered most of the Hawaiian Islands unifying them into the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Today the Big Island is more like the Kingdom of Golf. With 22 golf courses, the region has some of the top rated courses in the world. At the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Golf Course, is a new addition for getting around the course called golfboards. You can surf the course on a GolfBoard which is a core workout attuned to snowboarding or surfing. It also speeds up the pace of play making an average round of 18 holes on the GolfBoard in only 2 hours and 37 minutes.
The Mauna Lani Resort features two championship courses, the Francis H. I’i Brown North and South Courses. There are some unique features on Mauna Lani’s courses Including the Hawaiian Goose or Nēnē which is a species of goose endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is the official state bird of Hawaii
There are also goats, dozens of them which help keep the brush and grasses down. They are nature’s natural lawnmower. Most of the putting greens are Bermuda grass and balls tend to roll faster towards the ocean.
Cats are king at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, where ferrel kitties roam the sprawling property for treats and to help keep the rodent population at bay. The Mauna Kea was the brainchild of Laurence Rockefeller and was the most expensive hotel ever built in 1966 when it opened. The Kaunaoa beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii and in the winter offers exciting opportunities for boogie boarders and surfers.
Lava Lava also has some cottages that can be rented for those who want a spot where you can roll right from the bed to the beach.
The Growing Volcanic Beach, Pohoiki, Hawaii

FINDINGS
Sand and sediment at Pohoiki has continued to build up following the end of the 2018 eruption, with the thickest accumulations now extending over 450 feet into the ocean from the old coastline and filling Pohoiki Bay to where it was previously 10 feet deep.
The shallow areas around Pohoiki Bay were rapidly inundated by fresh and eroded lava rock fragments in August 2018, starting nearest the boat ramp at its northern margin. Sediment continued to deposit and accumulate southwest into Pohoiki’s ‘Second Bay’ through the end of 2018. Once Second Bay was filled, sand spilled around Lae O Kahuna, the point between Second and Third Bay, driven by the predominant longshore current to the southwest. Over 2019, the beach roughly doubled in length, from 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile long, and now stretches past Mahinaakaaka Heiau.
The beach covered 8.2 acres of the bay over the final 5 months of 2018. In the next 12 months, it covered an additional 7.7 acres, for a total coverage of 15.9 acres by the start of 2020. By this measure, the rate of coverage slowed from 1.64 acres/month to 0.64 acres/month, though to compare accumulation it would be necessary to include the upwards growth of the beach by stacking.
It’s worth noting that specifically at the northern part of Pohoiki beach in the area of the boat ramp, it appears that sediment deposition is approaching an equilibrium, with greatly slowed, but still visible seaward growth in the last 6 months.
Currently we have no reason to suggest that the sand has been receding in any area between the lava flows northeast of Pohoiki Bay and southwest of Third Bay, in contrast to some anecdotal accounts. There are some smaller scale trends that relate to recent surf swells and their direction and intensity, yet the overall trend of steady growth remains.
Finally, it would not be unusual if the beach widens further during the summer months, following the typical pattern seen elsewhere in Hawai‘i and across the world. Most likely, we will know Pohoiki has reached its sediment capacity once the beach is seen to lose sediment during the winter months, unlike in 2019.
METHODS
Using aerial imagery taken of Pohoiki Beach from August 9th, 2018 to January 1st, 2020, we apply pixel analysis to determine the rough progression of sediment buildup following the 2018 LERZ eruption of Kīlauea. The current sand/rock buildup forming the present beach was verified by measurements taken on the beach in late December, 2019.
LIMITATIONS
The aerial footage used in this study was not captured with our analysis in mind, anmd as such the angles and equipment vary. Also, the tides and surf swells of the ocean vary between each flight. These limitations reduce precision of the map subsequently created. The final limitation comes from a lack of available aerial imagery and the irregular intervals between flights, which creates some additional variance in mapping the sand movement in chronological order. All in all, the margin of error for each pixel is estimated to be no greater than 30 ft.
BACKGROUND
The 2018 eruption of Kīlauea created a significant deposit of new lava extending the coastline between Pohoiki and Kapoho, a distance of roughly four miles. Lava flows claimed the ‘Shacks’ and ‘Bowls’ surf spots on the northern area of Pohoiki, but stopped short of claiming the Pohoiki Boat Ramp. Following the eruption, sand and rock began to be swept into Pohoiki Bay from the predominant currents. The sand quickly blocked the boat ramp as it built a new black sand beach in Pohoiki’s First Bay. The State of Hawai‘i has explored options for relocating and restoring access to the Pohoiki Boat Ramp, which remains the only ramp on the east side of Hawai‘i Island.

Large Shark near surfer Pismo State Beach July 2nd 2017
This is just a few hundred yards from where I live. I have been flying drones for 4 years here and have never seen sharks in the line up until 2 days ago. (spotted 3 in the wave zone very close to where about 20 kids were swimming and surfing) The sharks are in close right now and being spotted on a regular basis by surfers and kite surfers the past week. I'm just posting this so people can see what is out there and use their own judgement as to whether or not they still want to paddle out.
Akumal Bay sea turtle snorkeling 1 - Sony 1080i HD
Amazing morning, left Barcelo Maya Beach Tropical at 8am for Akumal Bay by boat. The sea was calm and the ride of about 30 minutes just flew by. Less than a minute after entering the waters of Akumal Bay we spotted the first sea turtle grazing. Water conditions were great, calm, clear and warm so we have lots of turtle videos.
This is the second time We did this tour, once from Grand Palladium Colonial and saw turtles both times, recommended tour.

Tsunami - Rogue River Oregon 2011
Gold Beach Tsunami 2011 - View from the Rogue River Bridge
This was an incredible display of the power mother nature. We were very excited to witness and observe this tsunami that was relatively small and posed little threat to human life. We were having fun witnessing this, and that is no disrespect to Japan and the tragedy that is unfolding over there.
This is clips of footage that was captured over a 4-5 hour time period. During this time about 10-15 tsunami waves surged up the rogue river. Of these only 5 were larger breaking waves. Tsunami occured during a pretty low tide (0-3 ft). The Rogue River was cranking that day too, showing 26,000 CFS at Agness which likely means closer to 35,000 CFS in Gold Beach. Point is those waves were pushing against a lot of water.

2011 Tsunami Hawaii - La Mariana Damage Slideshows
Here's some additional footage and slideshows of damage to La Mariana Sailing club in the Keehi lagoon of Honolulu, HI.
By the end of the day of the tsunami, the workers were able to lasso the pieces of B dock and allow plank access to its boats. The boats in the loop between B and C dock were still trapped since B dock was drug into C dock. The boats from A dock were also pulled apart where they had been smashing together. Some boats were sadly lost.
Near the end I also show some pictures of the floating debris of what used to be Keehi Marine Center. The debris at that time was floating just off the 400 pier of the Keehi State Harbor.
