Street with Themes '40 Steps' 4K UHD Time Lapse in Busan
The 40 Steps have taken on symbolic meaning signifying the sorrows of 6.25 refugees and a kind of monument to acknowledge and soothe those sorrows. It is not clear when the 40 Steps were constructed. Considering that the 「Saemadang」 in Jungang-dong was created in August of 1908, the steps were constructed over a slope leading from Donggwang-dong 5-ga to 「Saemadang」 after that period. The 「40 Steps」 began to become widely known as people arrived in Busan to seek shelter during the Korean War. At that time, the 「40 Steps」 area was a shantytown filled with refugees. Those refugees opened a market place to sell relief supplies. The 「40 Steps」 area was famous for shops selling skewered food during the Japanese colonial period and a favorite place of drinkers. After the Korean War, the area came to be more famous for illegal dealing in dollars. After a song that begins with the line 「A wanderer sitting on 40 steps………」 became popular, 「40 Steps」 became widely known. The song described the sorrows of refugee life. During the Korean War, Yeongdo Bridge could be seen from the「40 Steps」. Refugees used to soothe their sorrows by leaning against the steps and look at the bridge in the daytime and the glittering lights of ships anchored at the North Port and think of their hometowns. Such sorrows of refugee life were expressed by a popular song whose background was the 「40 Steps」.

Analogue Alley Forty Steps in Jung-gu, Busan_아날로그 골목, 부산중구 40계단 이야기
A Story of Special Steps
Disappearing slowly, but with unforgettable memories...
This street still preserves the same appearance of decades ago.
It even displays the tragedy of wartime.
Sin Chun-sik: Before Korea was developed during the 1960s, we had to go through many difficult times such as the Korean War in 1950. They were really tough times, truly!
Kim Jong-gil: It was hard. The city was crowded with countless refugees... and we were all facing difficult situations.
Here is a building to commemorate the harsh times.
Forty Steps Cultural Center
Yi Mi-yeon : The Forty Steps Cultural Tourism Theme Street was established to display numerous artifacts used decades ago and to exemplify what it looked like during the Korean War.
The items on display must have been very common back in those days, but they've become unfamiliar now.
Kids and youngsters might think they are quite interesting.
Do you wonder where it is?
It's just across the street from Busan Station, in Jungang-dong, Jung-gu, Busan.
It is said that refugees used to sit here on the steps to ease their tired souls while drinking a bowl of makgeolli.
The Forty Steps connects two regions of Busan, Dongwang-dong and Jungang-dong. During wartime, many people used the steps to go to work, for example, to nearby harbors and markets. So to speak, the steps represented the hard life of those people.
Sometimes, a song on the steps made them relaxed for a while.
Nothing to wear... Nothing to eat... Everything was just insufficient.
However, there was surely one thing left.
Song Gang-hui: When a rice puff man appeared in an alley carrying popped rice or fried rice crackers, we had to try hard to make him give us some of them. It was sad and we were still hungry. But we didn't lose hope.
The hope.
The world changed a lot, but some things never change.
Sitting here, I sing a song about that which doesn't change.
We always carry hope in our minds.
Once valuable memories are now disappearing slowly.
However, we can find it again at this place.

Magnum Photos photographer Thomas Hoepker received much acclaim for photographing and publicizing the heroic side of boxing champion Muhammad Ali when racial discrimination was at its worst, and for spending three years in East Germany in the 1970s to introduce to the world the lives of its people. Recently the renowned photographer visited Korea, where he traveled with art student Choi Ji-young to places that still bear the traces of national division and war.
The two travelers first take the DMZ train to Cheorwon and tour Baekmagoji, the Second Tunnel, the Korean Workers' Party Headquarters and the Seungilgyo Bridge, all of which witnessed the tragedy of the Korean War.
Their second destination is Korea's largest port-city of Busan, where the past throbs beneath the flashy, modern metropolis it has become today. The Yeongdodaegyeo Bridge, which was a popular meeting point among refugees during the Korean War, still bears the traces of life from more than six decades ago. The 40 Step Culture and Tourism Theme Street and Ibagu Road are among the places that witnessed the struggles of war refugees and the most tumultuous period in the history of Busan.
The final leg of this trip is Gyodongdo Island, which is surrounded by a barbed wire fence. Across the fence is the North Korean territory, which can be seen with the naked eye. Located just two kilometers from the North Korean village of Yeonbaek, Gyodongdo, is home to many displaced people who cannot return to their hometowns in the North. The two travelers visited one of the local families, which was making preparations for the Chuseok holiday.
