The Pierre Hotel in New York
Home to some of the most wealthy Americans. There is a condominium portion of the building where Warren Buffet and Kirk Kirkorian own condominiums.
The Pierre is a luxury hotel located at 2 East 61st Street at the intersection of Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, facing Central Park. The hotel, which was designed by Schultze & Weaver, opened in 1930, and was later acquired by Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces of India. Standing 525.01 feet (160.02 m) tall,[1] it is located within the Upper East Side Historic District as designated in 1981 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The 714-room Pierre Hotel that rose forty-one stories on the site of the Gerry mansion at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 61st Street allowed for unrestricted views of Central Park. It cost $15 million (approximately $210 million in 2013) to build and opened to grand fanfare in October 1930. The hotel was designed by the New York firm of Schultze and Weaver as a skyscraper that rises in a blond-brick shaft from a limestone-fronted Louis XVI base.[6] Its topmost floors render it an easily-recognizable landmark on the New York skyline; they are modeled after Mansart's Royal Chapel at Versailles, a system of Corinthian pilasters and arch-headed windows, with octagonal ends, under a tall, slanted, copper roof that is pierced with bronze-finished bull's-eye dormers. New York society turned out to attend the gala dinner that marked the opening of The Pierre; it was prepared by Auguste Escoffier, the father of French chefs, who served as a guest chef at The Pierre in its early years.
As markets continued to collapse during the Great Depression, The Pierre went into bankruptcy in 1932. The oilman, J. Paul Getty, bought it for about $2.5 million in 1938 (approximately $41.9 million in 2013) and subsequently sold many cooperative apartments in the building.
Beginning in 1948, New York City's ABC television and FM radio station (then called WJZ-TV Channel 7 and WJZ-FM 95.5, now WABC-TV and WPLJ) broadcast from a tower atop the Pierre, until moving to the Empire State Building a few years later.[citation needed]
The Pierre was the scene of the Pierre Hotel Robbery in 1972.
Today, the hotel contains 189 guest accommodations, including forty suites, and thirteen grand suites. Dining options in the hotel include the restaurant Sirio located off Fifth Avenue and the 2E Lounge off the Main Lobby of the hotel.
The Pierre came under the management of the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in 1981. In its 75th anniversary year in 2005, The Pierre became a Taj Hotel as Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, a global chain of fine luxury hotels and resorts, succeeded as the new lessee and operator. Taj Hotels is part of India's Tata Group.[7]
In 1959, seventy-five apartments were sold to a cooperative of private residents, while The Pierre's owner at that time, J. Paul Getty, retained control of the hotel's services and guest rooms. Among the permanent residents at The Pierre have been Elizabeth Taylor, Viacom entertainment-company chairman Sumner Redstone, Mohamed al-Fayed, then the owner of Harrods, and the late designer Yves Saint-Laurent. Thirteen of the apartments have since become grand suites.
The Pierre rises over Central Park
A triplex co-op that occupies the top three floors was placed on the market in 2003, with a pricetag of $70 million.[8] This 11,000-square-foot (1,000 m2) apartment features five bedrooms, four terraces, a paneled library, a wine cellar, a black Belgian-marble staircase and the hotel's former ballroom with 23-foot (7.0 m) high ceilings. It was originally purchased by the hedge-fund manager Martin Zweig, from publishing heiress Mary, Lady Fairfax, in 1999 for $21.5 million. With its $70 million price tag payable in full at purchase, the co-op was listed in 2006 in Forbes Magazine as the eighth-most expensive home in the world,[9] fourth-most expensive home in the United States,[10] and second-most expensive home in the Northeastern United States in 2006.[11] It was again put on the market in 2013 at the asking price of $125 million.[12]
The board of directors has turned-down two would-be buyers.[13] The penthouse returned to the market in March 2013 for an asking price of $125 million.[14] The price was adjusted to $95 million later that year.
Live: Ticker-tape parade for USWNT in New York arrives at City Hall for ceremony
Around 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, the first float from the ticker-tape parade to celebrate the World Cup champion U.S. women’s national team arrived at New York’s City Hall. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) was scheduled to present players keys to the city in a ceremony emceed by “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts.
The parade began just after 9:30 a.m. at the Battery and proceeded along Broadway. U.S. co-captain Megan Rapinoe rode on the main float with de Blasio, who waved an American flag, and several teammates, including Julie Ertz, Ali Krieger and New York native Allie Long, who held the World Cup trophy.

There were chants of “Equal pay!” from players and the crowd, just as there were at Stade de Lyon in France after the Americans defeated the Netherlands on Sunday. U.S. defender Tierna Davidson held a sign that read, “Parades are cool. Equal pay is cooler!!”

Twelve floats transported players from the Battery to City Hall, the stretch of Broadway known as the “Canyon of Heroes.” The crowds along the 0.8 mile-long parade route were larger near City Hall, where a ceremony was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
A limited number of tickets to the ceremony were claimed within seconds of being made available online on Monday afternoon. Fans without tickets gathered outside the gates of City Hall Park to catch a glimpse of the champions after the parade.

Reuters reported that nearly a ton of shredded, recyclable paper was placed along the parade route. According to ABC 7 New York, 350 sanitation workers with 130 backpack blowers were assigned to clean up the mess.
Players and fans were showing their enthusiasm well before the scheduled 9:30 start time.
“NYC it’s parade time let’s do this!,” U.S. midfielder Kelley O’Hara tweeted. “Bonus points to anyone who brings me a beer or 4.”
Rapinoe arrived at Wednesday’s festivities with her own beverage in hand.

“I am sooo excited, because it’s beautiful out and I’m with my teammates, and we’re going to have so much fun,” U.S. forward Mallory Pugh said in a video posted on Twitter shortly after 8 a.m.
The weather is indeed beautiful, with temperatures expected to be between 78 and 84 degrees. CBS and ABC are streaming the parade online and via their mobile apps, and EarthCam is offering a free, live webcast of the festivities. It also is airing on Fox Sports 2 and ESPNU.

Before Wednesday’s parade, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) addressed reporters at the Battery.
“I think they are a model of possibility for women across the world with what they’ve accomplished,” Cuomo said of the U.S. team. “ . . . These 23 champions are banging on the glass ceiling that is still in existence in the United States of America. They’re going to keep banging until they break it.”
“There is no rationale that the women should not get paid what the men get paid,” Cuomo said to cheers. “FIFA and the U.S. Soccer conference have done this team a disservice and an injustice . . . We say to the U.S. Soccer league and we say to FIFA, if you don’t pay women what you pay men, then you have no business in the state of New York.”
The victory lap for the U.S. women will span both coasts on Wednesday. After the parade, players will fly to Los Angeles to attend the 27th edition of The ESPYs on Wednesday night. The awards show, which will be hosted by comedian Tracy Morgan, honors the past year’s top athletes and achievements. U.S. forward Alex Morgan, who tied for the World Cup lead with six goals in France, is among the nominees for Best Female Athlete. Morgan and her teammates appeared on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday.
New York has experience celebrating the national team. In 2015, de Blasio’s administration announced a parade along the stretch of Broadway known as the Canyon of Heroes, from the Battery to City Hall. It was held five days after the Americans defeated Japan, 5-2, to win their third World Cup title and three days after the USWNT celebrated with thousands of fans at a rally at L.A. Live near the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Carter arrives to the podium, and opens with the upcoming funeral of and tribute to Sen. John McClellan (D-AR) who died on November 28th, then goes to the progress of Israeli-Egyptian peace negotiations,
Questions from reporters which issues the President tackles include UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim's comments on the negotiations, representation of the Palestinians, Soviet involvement in the negotiations, Capitol Hill negotiations over energy policy, whether he made too many campaign promises to fulfill, whether he'll reappoint Arthur Burns as Fed chairman and effects on the business community if he doesn't, the overpreponderance of Georgians in his Administration and whom he'd replace Bert Lance with, engaging of other Arab nations in Israeli-Egyptian negotiations, Federal inspections of private dams, tax reform, the October trade deficit and economic policy.
The conference over, Tom makes his observations, interrupted by a few impromptu comments by the President and reporters such as Mr. Donaldson; then Koppel makes some analyses before the report ends.
