In 2019, James is releasing a series of 12 new singles – one every month – under the banner ‘Songs and Stories.’ This is song #2, available digitally:
Nashville honky-tonk crooner, James Carothers is known for his stone-country originals, spot-on impressions of several of country's greatest icons, character band mates and a large fan base of fiercely supportive followers who love real country music.
James can be found playing 3-4 shows per week at The George Jones, AJ’s Good Time Bar and Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row in Nashville, TN when he's not on the road. In 2019, James will be releasing a series of 12 new singles – one every month – under the banner ‘Songs and Stories.’ Previous releases include ‘Still Country, Still King: A Tribute to George Jones’ (September 2018), which debuted at #16 on the iTunes Country Chart, his first full-length original album ‘Relapse’ (May 2017) and an EP ‘Honky Tonk Land’ (June 2014).
Selected to open five Alan Jackson tour dates in 2019
Listed as one of Rolling Stone Country’s “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know: October 2018”
2018 WSM Road Show Winner, resulting in the opportunity to make Grand Ole Opry debut with Alan Jackson
2018 Ameripolitan “Outlaw Male” Award Nominee
Has opened for Trace Adkins, The Charlie Daniels Band, Dustin Lynch, Cody Johnson, William Michael Morgan, Ben Haggard, Joe Diffie, A Thousand Horses & The Kentucky Headhunters.
In 2015, James left a technician job at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and returned to his native state of Tennessee to pursue a country music career at the unlikely ripe-old-age of 33. Since then, he has performed over a thousand shows at The George Jones & other venues throughout downtown Nashville. George Jones' own widow, Nancy, personally hired Carothers for the initial gig, giving him the opportunity to make a living playing music & to hone his hobby-turned-profession in an accelerated fashion.
In addition to supporting his young family and connecting with others musicians and songwriters, performing downtown has helped Carothers build a large fan base of downtown tourists drawn through the doors by the booming voice echoing down Broadway or 2nd Avenue. Playing so many shows in a relatively short time-frame in a city with an excess of raw talent forced him to sharpen his stage show quickly and continue to refine the thing he’s always enjoyed most — entertaining and interacting with folks in a way that leaves most people feeling like they’ve made a new friend. Over the past couple of years, James has enjoyed playing several opening slots, festivals, fairs, and private events in locations all across the United States as opportunities have presented themselves and he’s even had the chance to travel to Canada, Japan, Scotland and Norway for shows.
“James Carothers sounds like a soundtrack for the grand tour that celebrates classic country’s history of rowdy crooners and sentimental outlaws.” — Will Hodge, Rolling Stone Country

A NOTE FROM JAMES ABOUT THE SONG:
Last year, when I released the studio version of this song, I told y'all that Papaw (my Grandpa) always had little trucks that he drove around that were in really bad shape. No doubt, they were a danger to himself and everyone else that was on the road! When my dad and I's good friend, Dave (down in Waynesboro, TN), heard this song, he invited us to come for a ride in his dad's old truck, that now belongs to him. This little Toyota has just about everything in it that the song talks about - down to the rebar and five-gallon bucket. The police told Dave that he can no longer drive this truck into town, but we had a fantastic afternoon just tootling around the countryside and watching his Cur Feist dog, Dude, chase us around. THAT dog would follow THAT truck through the gates of hell! So here it is again, an ode to the undersized and busted-up underdogs that slay giants with their relentless fight. - James
ABOUT JAMES CAROTHERS:
Nashville honky-tonk crooner, James Carothers, is known best for his stone-country originals and spot-on impressions of several of country music's greatest icons.
James released a new album called Songs and Stories on November 22, 2019. Previous releases include Still Country, Still King: A Tribute to George Jones (September 2018), his first full-length original album Relapse (May 2017), and an EP Honky Tonk Land (June 2014).
In 2015, James left a technician job at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and returned to his native state of Tennessee to pursue a country music career. George Jones' own widow, Nancy, personally hired James for his first steady gig at the George Jones Museum in Nashville, allowing him to make a living playing music and to hone his hobby-turned-profession in an accelerated fashion. Since then, James has played several shows each week in downtown Nashville at places like The George Jones and AJ's Good Time Bar when he's not on the road, having played over 1500 public, corporate, and private events since January 2015.
In addition to supporting his young family and connecting with other musicians and songwriters, performing downtown has helped James build a large fan base of folks drawn through the doors by the booming voice echoing down Broadway and 2nd Avenue. James was the 2018 WSM Road Show Winner, resulting in the opportunity to make his Grand Ole Opry debut opening for Alan Jackson at the Ryman Auditorium on January 17, 2020. He was also selected by Jackson from the crop of rising artists who play at AJ’s Good Time Bar, Jackson’s self-owned honky-tonk on downtown Nashville’s famed “Lower Broadway,” to open select dates on Jackson’s 2019 “Honky Tonk Highway” tour. Over the past few years, James has enjoyed playing several opening slots, festivals, fairs, and private events in locations all across the United States and has even had the opportunity to travel to Canada, Japan, Scotland, and Norway for shows.

Legends Corner, Broadway, Nashville, Tennessee 1
Legends Corner - stage and music pub, Broadway, Tennessee, United States 2002, Nashville nightlife
What do the five original 78RPM Elvis Presley Sun Records, a set of KISS Dolls and a 12 string autographed guitar once owned by Johnny Cash have in common? They are all hanging on the walls at Legends Corner (a true Honky Tonk Row treasure) along with such memorabilia as first albums done by many of country music’s Legends. When you walk in the door of Legends Corner you are astounded by the number of albums on the wall and the unusual musical instruments from all over the world, like a didgeridoo from Australia, a balalaika from Russia or a pickin’ stick from Appalachia.
