In early fall the grounds are covered in red from Coral grass, as though a red carpet had been laid. Every year in September the annual Lake Notoro Coral Grass Festival is held.
Lake Notoro, 35 km in circumference, is divided by the Sea of Okhotsk and a sand bar and is full of treasures of the sea.

Hokkaido Winter Market & Street Food Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Hokkaido in the winter is cold and if you go to the very north coast along the Sea of Okhotsk, you'll find Abashiri (網走市) 260km / 165mi north of Sapporo.
In February, it's the high season for tourists because this is where you go to see a lot of snow. ice drifts and eat a lot of amazing seafood.
During the city's annual Drift Ice Festival, you'll also find the amazing Okhotsk Yatai Mura Food Market (オホーツク屋台村) where local resident come out to celebrate the cold long nights together with good food from the Sea of Okhotsk and copious amounts of beer and atsukan (hot Japanese sake). This is an excellent experience of a lively night market in Hokkaido and worth a stop and bite.

This one-hour cruise on a sight-seeing boat is a non-event in our opinion. Labeled as an Icebreaker, I would guess ice strengthened hull is more like it since it does not crunch through ice. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the drift ice, a few minutes spent there and then the boat turns back to port. B-o-r-i-n-g...

A trip to Abashiri in Hokkaido – A stunning icebreaker cruise on the Sea of Okhotsk in winter!
The main attraction during winter in the Okhotsk area, an icebreaker ship, has started operations for this year. Enjoy the overwhelming power of this icebreaker that breaks apart huge blocks of drift ice covering the sea as it moves forward! (The service is offered daily from January 20 to March 31.)

A white sheet of drifting ice covers waters in the coastal area of Abashiri, Hokkaido. The ice finally reached the coast on the Sea of Okhotsk on Monday.
Abashiri to Kushiro, a train journey
Yesterday I packed as little as possible and set off to catch the train from Abashiri to Kushiro, where I will be staying for three nights before returning to Abashiri.
Kushiro is off to the east, and is on the Western Pacific Ocean, as opposed to Abashiri which is on the Sea of Okhotsk, the Russian name for what I believe is also the Pacific.
The little old train chugged in to the station and quite a few people got on. Right on time, off we set on a journey through more snowy landscapes.
The journey took a little under three hours and was a delight. People got on and off at what seemed to me to be the most obscure places. At one point a large number of people alighted being replaced with an equally large number, and I worked out from the Japanese sign (very proud of myself!) that there was an onsen here. An onsen is a hot springs bath (like a spa) and they are a way of life in Japan, and very popular with tourists too. Though not this one. The idea of being totally naked in a hot tub (clothing strictly forbidden and by the way, also tattoos!) surrounded by others doesn’t of itself appeal. But more, the idea of being lovely and warm and then having to get out into the freezing cold strikes me as the last thing in the world I would want to do. To be fair, you have to bathe before going in so I believe they are quite clean, and in case you were wondering they are usually single sex only.
At every stop there were people standing on the platform taking photos of our train. I don’t know if train-spotting is just a popular hobby in Japan or whether our train had some special interest. I’ll have to take a photo of it on the return journey to see if I can work out the answer.
At one point, instead of the usual brief stop, we stayed in the station for a good few minutes whilst a man with a tray of comestibles plied his wares.
The landscape changed as we travelled, as the snow lessened and dry marsh grass began to make its appearance.
Eventually we arrived in Kushiro and my map said it was about a kilometre to my hotel. As I only had a light back I thought I would walk. Google said go south. I had no idea which way was south. A biting wind hit my face.
And I thought, to hell with it and jumped in a taxi. What a pleasure it was to ride in comfort to the door of what turned out to be a beautiful hotel – it’s in the Crowne Plaza group – and my room is equally beautiful. The view from the window is stunning.

[The Incredible Japanese Prison Break]
Aomori, Japan. 1936. Prisoner Yoshie Shiratori had had enough.
He was forced to confess to a murder he did not commit, falsely imprisoned in Aomori Prison, beaten and tortured every night by prison guards, and, now worse, prosecutors were seeking the death penalty. In his mind, it was time to go; but Aomori Prison wasn’t the easiest to escape.
Regardless, Yoshie Shiratori had nothing to lose, and so at 5:30 am he made his move. He knew there would be a 15 minute gap in the patrol time as he had studied the guards’ routine for months; and when the coast was clear, he pulled out a metal wire (which he had smuggled in from the bathhouse) and started to pick the lock. (This was originally the metal support ring that was wrapped around the bathing buckets inmates used to wash themselves).
His hands were stiff from the wintry cold, but after a few minutes of picking, he had success, and his cell door swung open. But he wasn’t out of the woods yet, because there were more locked doors ahead. He knew he only had a few minutes left before the guards would return, and so he wasted no time attempting to pick his way through the remaining security doors.
Now fortunately for him, he was able to make it out of the facility, but the bad news was that he was only halfway to freedom. You see, he was still well within the search perimeter, which meant at any moment the alarm could go off and he’d still be caught.
At 5:45am the guards returned, peering into his cell; and this is what they saw - Shiratori sound asleep in his futon bed. ...

Ryuhyo - Japanese Drift Ice in the Sea of Okhotsk Abirishi, Hokkaido
Ryuhyo is drift ice that appears along the northern coast of Hokkaido (in northern Japan) in the Sea of Okhotsk from about late January to early April. Visitors can take hour-long cruises on ice-breaking ships from northern coastal towns like Abashiri. Drift ice is important to the region's ecosystem because it helps plankton grow which are the base of the food chain for the region. Unfortunately in recent years Global Warming has reduced the amount of drift ice.
This footage is from about 2 years ago that I just now got around to editing. I was in Hokkaido for the Yuki Matsuri/Snow Festival and decided to go to Abashiri to see the drift ice. This was actually my second time having gone before a few years earlier. I was lucky on both occasions to see the drift ice because some days you can't see it as it depends on the weather and wind conditions.
