Montmajour Abbey, formally the Abbey of St. Peter in Montmajour, was a fortified Benedictine monastery built between the 10th and 18th centuries on what was originally an island five kilometers north of Arles, in what is now the Bouches-du-Rhône Department, in the region of Provence in the south of France.
The abbey complex consists of six sections:
the hermitage, dating from the 11th century, which includes the Chapel of St. Peter;
the cloister, built during the 12th and 13th centuries;
the adjacent Chapel of the Holy Cross, built during the 12th century;
the fortified Monastery of St. Peter, built during the 14th century;
the Tower of Abbot Pons de l'Orme, dating from the same period;
the Maurist monastery, built in the 17th century.
The abbey is noted for its 11th–14th-century graves, carved in the rock, its subterranean crypt, and its massive unfinished church. It was an important pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages, and in the 18th century it was the site of a large Maurist monastery, now in ruin. The abbey and the landscape around it were frequently painted and drawn by Vincent van Gogh.
It has been listed since 1840 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture. Today the ruins of the abbey are cared for as a historic monument by the Centre des monuments nationaux.
Until the late Middle Ages, Montmajour was an island, 43 meters above the surrounding terrain, protected by marshes and accessible only by boat. As early as the 3rd millennium BC the island was used as a cemetery, with individual graves carved into the rock. In the 9th and 10th centuries the island also served as a sanctuary for the local residents during invasions of the Saracens and the Normans.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross (French: Chapelle de Sainte-Croix) was built to contain the most valuable relic of the abbey, a piece of the True Cross. It is located a few hundred meters from the abbey church, outside the monastery walls, to provide the monks with greater separation from the crowds of pilrims.

Outreach & Education - Cloister of St. Trophime in Arles, France
St. Trophime in Arles, France, is an important pilgrimage site and the starting point of the Via Tolosana to Santiago de Compostela. The church of St. Trophime was built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries—a time of great prosperity in Arles—while the construction of the adjoining monastic cloister began in the twelfth century. Its north and east galleries contain extraordinary Romanesque bas-relief sculptures and carved column capitals that depict stories from the Bible. The later, fourteenth-century south and west galleries of the cloister contain sculpture with scriptural depictions in the Gothic style.
In 2008, WMF became involved in the conservation of the cloister at St. Trophime. In collaboration with CyArk, WMF created laser scans of the cloister that allowed us to propose a detailed conservation program through web-based 3-D models in combination with drawings, high-resolution photography, and narrative descriptions of treatments to be employed.

It was founded in 948. At the end of the tenth century it became one of the richest abbeys in Provence. The monastery was abandoned in the late eighteenth century and destroyed during the French Revolution.

Abbey of St Gall - UNESCO World Heritage Site
A tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Abbey of St Gall, a beautiful monastery and library complex originally founded in the 9th century. The library here is one of the best-stocked in the world, featuring hundreds of texts from before the year 1000! Lots of great stuff to discover, though we were a little disappointed we couldn't film inside the library proper.

The former monastery of St Paul de Mausole
The former monastery of St Paul de Mausole, on the edge of St Remy de Provence.
It later became an asylum, whose most famous patient was sadly Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh stayed here after cutting off his own ear. The landscape surround the asylum inspired him to paint some of his well-known pieces, including Starry Night.
