Abita Spring IPA - The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer are springing forward with Abita's Spring IPA!
Abita Spring IPA
Brewed by:Abita Brewing Co. Louisiana, United States
Spring IPA (March-May) is a West Coast-style IPA with an up-front intense hop flavor and aroma. Amarillo and Centennial hops give the brew a rich and resinous flavor of citrus and spice. This bright pale ale has a malt sweetness that will give way to a pleasant bitter. It pairs well with Mexican or spicy Szechwan Chinese food. Spring IPA is a nice accompaniment for cheeses with strong flavors, like sharp cheddar or goat cheese.

Founded in 1986, the Abita Brewing Company is nestled in the piney woods 30 miles north of New Orleans.
In its first year, the brewery produced 1,500 barrels of beer. We had no idea what we started. Customers loved our beer! By 1994, we outgrew the original site (now our 100-seat brew pub) and moved up the road to a larger facility to keep up with demand.
We brew over 151,000 barrels of beer and 9,100 barrels of root beer in our state-of-the-art brewing facility. Our lagers and ales are brewed in small batches, hand-crafted by a team of dedicated workers with only the highest ideals of quality. This pride, along with our brewing process, is what creates our great brews.
We are privately owned and operated by local shareholders, many who have been with us since day one.
Abita uses only the finest ingredients -- British and North American malted barley, German and American yeast strains, Pacific Northwest hops and the pure artesian water of Abita Springs.
In Abita Springs, we are blessed with the purest of water. Drawn from our deep wells, our pristine water is not altered in any way.
Abita Beer has no preservatives, additives or stabilizers and is cold filtered. The result is beer that is the finest and freshest tasting as proven by our loyal customers and great chefs of the south who use Abita Beer in their recipes.
Since the turn of the century, people have been traveling to Abita Springs, Louisiana, for pure, clean-tasting water. Thus, with its fitting natural resources and small-town Southern charm, it became clear to us that Abita Springs would be the perfect place to pioneer the freshest and most unique tasting beers available today.

Abita Amber is a Munich style lager brewed with crystal malt and Perle hops. It has a smooth, malty, slightly caramel flavor and a rich amber color. Abita Amber was the first beer offered by the brewery and continues to be our leading seller. Amber is Abita's most versatile beer for pairing with food. It has been voted best beer in numerous New Orleans reader polls and is used frequently in recipes of great Louisiana chefs.
Because of its smooth, malty flavor, try it with smoked sausages, Louisiana boudin, or even with caviar. It's great with crawfish and Cajun food. You might also enjoy it paired with a spicy gumbo or tomato-based pasta sauce. It also goes well also with fried catfish dipped in a tart, lemony tartar sauce. Parmesan, Pecorino and Romano cheeses are good pairings with Abita Amber.
Chris Owens
Chris Owens is a United States performer, club owner and entrepreneur who bases her act out of the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. She has been a French Quarter fixture and celebrity from the start of the 1960s through the early 21st century. Though perhaps not a name of worldwide recognition, Owens is extremely well known in Louisiana and throughout the U. S. South. Tourists visiting the famous Bourbon Street cannot miss huge posters of her wearing revealing costumes as they walk by her nightclub.
Chris Owens (in purple at center) rides as Grand Marshall for the Krewe of Shangri-La Mardi Gras parade.
Details about Owens' past and career are sketchy at best. She can be seen in the 1962 movie The Wacky World of Doctor Morgus (see Morgus the Magnificent).
She eventually met and married millionaire Sol Owens. They opened a nightclub on St. Louis Street in the French Quarter; it was originally intended to be a low-key sideline establishment, but business exploded.
Realizing that Owens' performance numbers were a huge draw, they sold their home in 1977 and purchased the building on the corner of St. Louis and Bourbon. Soon the Chris Owens Review became a noted act in town.
In 1979 Sol had a heart attack and died; Chris Owens took over management of the club and of the 30 apartments and 4 shops located within the building. As of 2007 the club and Owens' act continue to be a draw. She hosts a yearly Patriotic Easter Parade that rolls down Bourbon Street.
Owens began production in 2003 of her first feature film, Let's Ballroom. Owens stars as a wealthy widow who falls in love with her dance instructor.
April 22, 2006 - Chris was inducted into the New Orleans Musical Legends Park with a statue created in her likeness. Her image stands next to other musical greats including Fats Domino.

Purple Haze
Purple Haze is a lager brewed with real raspberries added after filtration. It is brewed with pilsner and wheat malts and Vanguard hops. The berries add a fruity aroma, tartly sweet taste and a subtle purple color and haze...you may see fruit pulp in the beer.
This beer is best served with salads or light fruit desserts, such as soufflés or chiffon cakes. Many people enjoy it with chocolate desserts. Purple Haze pairs well with certain cheeses, such as ripened Brie or any dessert made with mascarpone. It's also great paired with entrees prepared with fruit, especially citrus. Consider enjoying Purple Haze alone at the end of your meal as dessert.

Abita Springs:
For centuries the local Choctaw Indians knew about the healing powers of the water found in what is now known as Abita Springs.
This story is of a young Spaniard named Henriques who lived in Louisiana during the late 1790s. While hunting along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, he met a beautiful Choctaw girl and persuaded the chief to allow them to marry. After bringing her home to New Orleans, Henriques watched his wife grow pale and weak, and soon he realized that she was very ill.
None of the local doctors could cure her so Henriques finally consulted the Choctaw's medicine man. The young woman was carried to the spring and left there with only a hammock, food and a dipper to drink from the spring.
When Henriques returned, to his amazement, his wife was totally well and the water's fame as a curative began to spread.
Word of the wonderful water spread to neighboring communities and in 1887, the first railroad arrived to the area. Boarding houses, hotels and restaurants were soon constructed to accommodate visitors. In 1903, the town of Abita Springs was formally organized and later chartered in 1912.
This small, south Louisiana town is a 20th-Century anachronism. Located in the heart of the piney woods north of Lake Ponchatrain near New Orleans, the town boasts a traffic circle, four churches and two schools. It is the kind of town that hardly exists anymore. Streets are tucked beneath a thick canopy of live oaks flanked by beautiful turn-of-the-century raised cottages.
The town is centered on the historic Tourist Park. Funds donated by the Abita Brewing Company helped restore and revitalize the park. The park houses a museum, amphitheatre, playground, fountain and historic pavilion. The park also serves as a trailhead for the Tammany Trace, a rails-to-trails project that wanders for 30 miles through St. Tammany Parish.
The Abita Town Hall serves as a true community center. The Town Council meets monthly and seniors, scouts, students and many others use the building. Six times a year the traditional roots music of the Abita Springs Opry can be heard and enjoyed.

We donate 75 cents from every bottle sold to a charitable fund established by Abita that assists with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive the disastrous oil spill.
To date, over $350,000 has been raised for the cause. Donations from the fund have fed fishermen and their families, restored critical wetland habitats along the coast and made Christmas a little brighter for struggling families.
100% of the net proceeds from related retail merchandise also goes to the SOS Fund. Online donations can also be made directly to the fund.
Immediately following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita we created Abita Restoration Pale Ale. Our brewery was miraculously spared any catastrophic damage and we made the decision to help others by doing what we do best...making beer. One dollar from every six-pack of Restoration Pale Ale was donated to the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation. Abita Restoration Pale Ale contributed $550,000 to the recovery effort.
Abita Abbey Ale honors the ancient traditions of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery. Abita offers up their support and thanks to the brothers at nearby St. Joseph's Abbey and Seminary College in Covington, Louisiana with a 25-cent donation with every bottle sold of this heavenly brew.

Louisiana Beer Reviews: Abita The Boot
4.8% alcohol. 14 IBU. Introduced in 2016. Brewed in Louisiana.
Over thirty years ago, we planted our flag in the Boot to brew for the way we love to live. The Boot is a crisp, refreshing brew made proudly and sold only within our home state. Brewed with white wheat, oats, and barley, hopped with Hallertau Blanc and fermented with German Kolsch yeast as a thanks to the folks who have been with us from the start.
