Археологическият резерват „Абритус” се намира на 2 км източно от Разград, в близост до централния път Русе – Варна. Целият резерват обхваща площ от 1000 декара и опазва археологическите останки на римския град Абритус. Абритус е основан в края на І в. н.е. като римски военен лагер върху руините на старо тракийско селище и се е разраснал до един от най-големите градски центрове в Долна Мизия - римската провинция, разположена на територията на днешна Северна България.
Abritus (Abrittus) was a late Roman city near the site of the modern city of Razgrad. The remains of Abritus (Abrittus) are located in the Archaeological Park of Razgrad and constitute an impressive Roman walled city that was one of the biggest urban centres in the province of Moesia Inferior. Abritus was established at the end of the 1st century AD as a Roman military camp built on the ruins of an ancient Thracian settlement and grew to become one of the biggest urban centres in Moesia Inferior. In 251 it was the site of the defeat and slaying of Decius at the Battle of Abrittus. It was destroyed by the Avars in the 6th century. Later a Bulgarian medieval settlement was built, which existed until the 10th century.

Dating back to the 1st century A.D., visitors can walk around the eerie ruins of this forgotten urban center, with its crumbling walls, ancient scripted stones and sprawling atrium (the central courtyard of the governor's house). Built atop an ancient Thracian settlement, this historic site is a unique glimpse into Bulgaria's rich Roman history.

Archaeological excavations have been conducted at the discovered site of Abritus since 1953.

Razgrad is probably most famous for being home of the Ludogorets (Crazy Forest) football team who put up great displays earlier this year against Liverpool and Real Madrid. The town centre was being renovated whilst I was there and looked a bit of a bomb site to be honest.

АБРИТУС
Римският военен кастел и късноантичен град Абритус е локализиран в местността Хисарлъка, на 1 км източно от Разград.
Възникнал в края на I век сл. Хр. като римски военен лагер и по-късно прерастнал в значим градски център в провинция Moesia Inferior (дн. Северна България). В Абритус през II век е лагерувала II-ра Луценска Кохорта -- помощна военна част на XI-ти Клавдиев легион със седалище Дуросторум (дн. Силистра). Охранявал е северната граница на Римската империя. В околностите на Абритус през 251 год. в битка с готите загива римският император Траян Деций (249-251). През V-VI век Абритус е епископско седалище и център на разпространение на християнската религия. Там е открито най-голямото в България късноантично златно монетно съкровище от 835 солиди (V век). Абритус е разрушен в края на VI век от авари и славяни. В края на IX началото на X век върху развалините на града е изградена българска крепост, разрушена в средата на XI век от печенегите.

Farmers and Forts in Moesia Inferior: Modelling agricultural strategies on the Danubian Frontier
This project analyzes changing rural settlement patterns in the Lower Danubian Plain from the Late Iron Age through Late Antiquity in order to elucidate the role played by garrison settlements in the economic strategies of peasants living near the Roman frontier. Using GIS, univariate statistical analysis and multivariate equation-based modeling, I interrogate rural landscapes for evidence of agricultural intensification and ancient marketing systems.
Settlements are the most durable traces left behind by rural, non-elites and the landscapes around settlements fundamentally shaped the opportunities and constraints these people faced. By identifying the features that attracted and repelled ancient settlers we can begin to understand the conditions under which settlement decisions were made. Using data collected from published and semi-published archaeological investigations in northern Bulgaria, I compare the productive potential of settlement territories to randomly distributed territories of the same size. I investigate the rural marketing through the concept of market potential – a measure of the total accessibility of marketing opportunities from any given location. I create market potential variables that include forts, exclude them, and include them as a negative influence. I then create a series of logistic regression models, varying only the market potential variables used. By comparing the goodness of fit of these models with one that excludes market potential altogether I can determine whether marketing opportunities influenced rural settlement and, if they did, which variable best approximates the ancient marketing system.
I come to the following conclusions: 1) the security provided by the Roman frontier allowed rural agriculturalists to settle in the most productive locations within the Danubian plain while the collapse of Imperial control at the end of the fourth century drove settlers to occupy less productive, but more defensible landscapes; and 2) Roman peasants sold their produce in small towns and cities, but not military bases.
