About Colorado Springs:
Colorado Springs is one of the greatest cities in America! It's size is small enough to maintain the feel of a connected community, but large enough to offer almost everything residents might need. There are so many things to do within the area that the family could go a whole year without visiting the same place twice. People are always out hiking, fishing, camping, and playing in the area. The endless recreation options ensure that there is always something to do that is fun.
Population:
The population density of Colorado Springs is lower than average, at 2325 people per sq mile. With plenty of room to grow, Colorado Springs is expected to continue it's growth trends for many years to come. Colorado Springs, CO is the second largest city in Colorado, with an estimated population of over 650,000 residents, including all the metro areas. The city offers more amenities than most of the surrounding areas, which is a contributing factor to its rapid growth. It's a fun place to live, work, and play!
National Pride:
Colorado Springs is the heart of the nation’s Olympic movement, where a timeless culture of achievement, national pride and dedication sits comfortably alongside awe-inspiring beauty and unparalleled natural training grounds. We are home to the United States Olympic Committee Headquarters, 21 National Olympic Governing Bodies, over 50 National Sport Organizations, the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the future U.S. Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame.
Diverse Community:
Our diverse community has always reached for the sky, while remaining firmly grounded in the tremendous opportunities that the Pike’s Peak Region affords us every day. Not limited to our manmade facilities, the region boasts incredible natural training ground, inspirational views and vistas, and a commitment to excellence that transcends sports and infuses itself in our educational, medical, technological and cultural assets.
Parks & Entertainment:
When Colorado Springs filed the original town plat in 1871, it included one city block as the first city-owned park. The park, known as North Park or Acacia Square is the site of the present-day Acacia Park. Colorado Springs' city founder General William Jackson Palmer generously donated 1,270 acres of parkland, bridle and foot paths, scenic drives and roadways planted with trees, to establish a significant foundation of the Colorado Springs park system. These gifts included Acacia (North) Park, Monument Valley Park, Antlers Park, Pioneer Square (South) Park, Palmer Park, North Cheyenne Cañon, Prospect Lake and Bear Creek Cañon. In 1909, the Perkins heirs gave Garden of the Gods Park to the City, adding to the beautiful parkland already established.
The wide range of exquisite restaurants in Colorado Springs range from high-end sophistication and superb elegance to rustic outdoor suppers, great wood-fired pizza and casual sidewalk cafes.
Colorado Springs restaurants also make outdoor patio dining a relaxing and inviting experience. During the warm months, you’ll be happy to see casual and family restaurants all over town opening their doors and setting out tables and chairs for al fresco diners. In the winter, cozy up near the fireplaces you’ll find in many international and special occasion restaurants around town.
True Community Involvement:
Unique partnerships between neighborhood associations, churches, schools, non-profit agencies, private businesses, and military installations allows the Colorado Springs Community Centers to create an unparalleled environment for learning, recreation, and personal growth. Additionally, the Community Centers provide comprehensive and integrated community-based services at a single site for youth, families, the elderly, and those with special needs.

Acacia Park Concepts by HB&A
What began as a casual conversation about possible Downtown Partnership summer activities in Acacia Park resulted in reflections on the current state of the park and beginning ideas for how to improve this important city center gathering place. The possibility of improving the space as well as larger downtown redevelopment ideas set the stage for HB&A architects and planners to unleash their creative ideas on ways to improve the heart of downtown Colorado Springs. We invited all staff to an initial meeting to talk about the park and its potential. Those who were interested were encouraged to dig into the park history, the current use of the area, conduct interviews with various user groups, and ultimately to develop a design concept for the park.
For a couple of months in late 2010 and early 2011, HB&A staff spent time researching public squares and other outdoor civic gathering spaces for inspiration. An image library was created with over 200 images from internet searches and personal files. Examples were found for all kinds of parks and civic squares, outdoor music venues, farm and art markets, outdoor ice skating venues, raised and roof top gardens, parks on top of parking structures, tensile structures that can provide shade and protection from rain, abundant lighting options, and integrated cafes within public spaces.
HB&A staff toured Acacia Park at various times of the day documenting the current condition of the area and its surroundings with photographs to capture initial assessments. In general, the geometry of the park with its intersecting diagonal walkways places an emphasis on moving completely through the space with entry on the corners. The shrubs that line the sides of the park create a visual barrier and do not facilitate midblock entry. The shuffle board area seems like a dead zone with its high iron fence keeping everyone out. With the exception of a few of the facing buildings, in general the park is surrounded by one story buildings that do not provide the density one would expect from a city center area in the heart of downtown.
Members of the Colorado Springs Police Department were invited to talk with HB&A staff about various users of Acacia Park from the perspective of public safety officers. The officers that participated have been focusing on Downtown since 2002 when they were assigned to the area under the neighborhood policing efforts. They have been a part of the officers on bicycles and worked out of the substation building near the shuffleboard courts during the summer months. They are currently members of the Homeless Outreach Team. The officers welcome ideas for getting more people in the park with family friendly activities.
One of the largest user groups of Acacia Park are the Palmer High School kids. HB&A invited members of the Student Council to participate in an hour and a half conversation and design exercise to better understand how the students interact with the park, what they like, how they think it could be improved, and what activities they would most like to have in the park. Eight students representing all four grades came to the HB&A office on February 24, 2011. These kids were very enthusiastic and eager to share their ideas. The first topic of discussion was their overall impression of what they like most about downtown Colorado Springs. They all like the community, diversity, different architecture, density of buildings, and variety of restaurants that are located in the immediate vicinity. Acacia Park is their gateway to downtown from the school.
After discussing the positive and negative aspects, the students participated in an improvisational activity in pairs where they alternated listing what changes they would make to Acacia to begin to get their ideas flowing. They were then grouped in four teams to work with an HB&A designer to capture a design concept for the park. The attached concepts document their initial products.

It was a potent yet peaceful event.

Colorado Springs, at an elevation of 6,035 ft., is a city in Colorado at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains. It lies near glacier-carved Pikes Peak, a landmark in Pike National Forest with hiking trails and a cog railway leading to its 14,114-ft. summit. The city's Garden of the Gods park features iconic red-sandstone formations and mountain views.

Behind the Scenes Footage live news Occupy Wall Street solidarity occupation Colorado Springs
I gathered some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage in between live coverage of the Occupy Wall Street solidarity occupation of Colorado Springs in Acacia Park on Wednesday morning.
This might help you realize why we don't trust some media sources. They may not work well as a team, might not be prepared for the report, or are just too focused on the problems with their equipment instead of the story going on around them. This did not effect the quality of the news caster's own coverage of the situation, but rather created a priceless moment of irony.
