Theory and Practice of Folklore in Cajun & Creole Louisiana
Barry Jean Ancelet discusses his fieldwork and current research, addressing the relationship between the theory and practice of folklore, between what folklorists think and how they convey the results of that thought to diverse audiences, including academic colleagues, cultural specialists and the general public. Although some folklorists have seen a dichotomy between thought and action, Ancelet has always seen them as inextricably integrated. He says that while he is more interested in discussing practice than theory, both are always in play.
Speaker Biography: Folklorist and University of Louisiana professor Barry Jean Ancelet is a leading scholar, author, expert and activist in the revival and revitalization of Cajun and Creole music and culture in Louisiana. He has been a leader not only in the academic study of Cajun and Creole folk culture, but in creating archives where the culture has been preserved, and festivals and other programs where the culture has been shared with diverse audiences. He is also a poet, songwriter and singer, and his 2016 CD with Sam Broussard, Broken Promised Land, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Regional Roots Music category.

Dead Zone, Sinking Cities, Foster Care | 6/14/19 | Louisiana: The State We're In
Andre’ Moreau talks with Ocean expert, LUMCON and LSU scientist, Nancy Rabalais, who has been diving into the Gulf of Mexico and measuring oxygen levels since 1985. When there is too little oxygen to support marine life, it’s called a ‘Dead Zone.’ This is caused by high water in the Mississippi River watershed that funnels excessive nutrients and fertilizer into the Gulf each year. Rabalais discusses what is expected to be a near record-size ‘Dead Zone’ this summer.
As part of the PBS and WNET “Sinking Cities” initiative, LPB has partnered with WWNO Public Radio to highlight how Louisiana is addressing climate change. WWNO reporter Tegan Wendland interviews Angela Chalk with Healthy Community Services about how the 7th Ward neighborhood in New Orleans is using flora to combat flooding.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve protects significant examples of the rich natural and cultural resources of Louisiana's Mississippi River Delta region. The park, named after the pirate Jean Lafitte, also interprets the influence of environment and history on the development of the unique Cajun regional culture. The park consists of six physically separate sites and a park headquarters.

This week on Louisiana, The State We’re In, we interview the one investigative reporter who told the story of pilot Barry Seal, the drug smuggler turned DEA informant, who was eventually shot to death in the parking lot of a Baton Rouge halfway house. Seal’s story is currently on display in theatres in the Tom Cruise flick, American Made.
We also talk with a state non-profit, who is actively working to ease the unexpected challenges of ex-cons and they adjust to life on the outside of prison walls.
Election day is upon us, and we speak with public radio reporter Sue Lincoln and John Couvillon from JMC Analytics & Polling about the upcoming decisions voters need to address.
Plus, we’re at the Louisiana prize film festival in Shreveport to see how this film fest has grown into a prize event for the state’s third largest city.
The Telling Tide
Coastal erosion, subsidence, sea level rise, climate change, channelization, levees: Louisiana’s coast is washing away, and with it, the vibrant cultures that have evolved and thrived there. Through oral history interviewing, four high schools along the coast were invited to participate in a one year oral history project that aimed to engage students in scrutinizing their community heritage, the land they have grown up on, the reasons behind Louisiana land loss, and what they stand to lose as Louisiana continues to lose ground. The four high schools involved in the project were South Cameron High School in Cameron Parish, West St. Mary school in St. Mary Parish, Thibodaux High School in LaFourche Parish, and Holy Cross School in Orleans Parish. The T. Harry Williams Center partnered with Louisiana Sea Grant to help these oral histories come to life.
