ACATENANGO VOLCANO HIKE in Antigua GUATEMALA with OX Expeditions
In 2018, Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala killed hundreds of people.
Today, we're doing the Acatenango volcano hike to see it ourselves.
I'm not sure I accurately captured how insanely difficult this hike was. I quit at least 4-5 times on the way up. For the first hour or two, you are on a constant hike up in sand deeper than your ankles carrying a pack that's 30-40 pounds.
When I say (many times) that it was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done, I mean it.
But it's worth it. If you do this hike and decide, like me, that you want to quit, I hope you also do what I did and continue.
As you'll see in this video, you're going to be treated to some of the most incredible sights you'll ever see.
Oh, and forget about sleeping. Volcan Acatenango will keep you awake all night! ????

Hiking Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes in Guatemala
A 3 day/2 night hike up Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes in Guatemala. Trip was booked through Old Town Outfitters in Antigua, Guatemala. Fuego is the active volcano that erupts throughout the video. We camped on the side of Acatenango which overlooks Fuego. Acatenango is the 3rd highest volcano in Guatemala and is dormant.
Acatenango & Fuego Volcano Hike - Overnight Tour Antigua Guatemala
Acatenango Volcano Hiking Tour from Antigua Guatemala with an extra hike to see Fuego Volcano erupting. The tour starts in Antigua Guatemala at around 8-9 AM and after a 1h drive to La Soledad the hiking begins. The first part of the hike is the toughest and lasts 1h. After another 2h on easier terrain, the lunch is served. The final hike of the first day is also easy (except the last 10 min) and you arrive at Acatenango Basecamp. Some tours require that you carry the tents with you but the one I booked has a permanent camping near the summit (pfiu!). Some guides can offer an extra hike to see Fuego Volcano (the active one) from up close. This extra hike takes 3h and it is tough. The next day at 4AM is the hike to Acatenango summit to see the sunrise and Fuego erupting. Afterwards, you return to basecamp for breakfast and start the descent which takes ~2h.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to climb a volcano?! Like a moth to a flame, I was drawn to the fire of Volcán de Fuego, near Antigua, Guatemala. Rather than climb this rather active fire-breathing dragon, I trekked up her sister Volcán de Acatenango, for arguably one of the best views I've ever experienced!
We climbed from 2450 m above sea level to 3975 m as we summited with the rising sun.10 km up, 10 km down. Traversing many ecosystems. Moving through many shifting internal and external weather patterns. From the forest, to the moon, and back. Join me on two challenging and profoundly beautiful days that changed my life forever.

ACATENANGO VOLCANO | HIKING & CAMPING | GUATEMALA | EP. 51 | THE RUNNING FISH
Finally, I have moved to Central America. The first stop is Guatemala! Guatemala has at least 37 volcanos. In this episode, we are going to one of them, the Acatenango Volcano.
I joined a 2-day tour for 450Q ($58). It's including most of the outfits. For equipment and boots, they are available to rent at the agency. A passport is required as a deposit.
It took me over 5 hrs to climb up to the campsite. The slope was very steep and slippery. The weather was not very stable. I couldn't define if that' was rain or fog. I finally made it by a porter carrying my bag (with 4 litres of water and extra clothes).
Our agency has a few huts at campsite with bedding already prepared. As far as I know, not every agency has that service.
Later in the afternoon, we had a fire place for marshmallow and hot chocolate. For dinner, our guides cooked some hot food for us. It was nice to meet other travellers who also like to explore the world.
2 people in our tour got sick due to the altitude. So, take your time & stay safe. It's difficult hike.
Since the weather was not stable, we couldn't see anything...It was quiet disappointed. For going down, I took half of the time. Basically, I was just sliding.
This experience couldn't let me down, I went straight to another one the week after. Stay tune for more.

Exhausting calf burning heart pounding two day expedition up steep sand, two steps forwards one step backwards.. Worth every second. Amazing views which included some spits of lava visible during the night time. 4am wake up to make the summit for sunrise.
Highly recommend this mission. Difficult hike but very rewarding.

From the first day we arrived in Guatamala we only wanted to do one particular thing, climbing the Acatenango volcano. It is a 2 day climb to reach the summit, wich is located at 3976 meter hight. From here you have a stunning view over two other volcano's. The Acatenango volcano lays near the town Antigua where we also stayed for a while. At the beginning of the video you see us going to the market to buy some stuff for the climb. The day after on April 25 we started climbing. It was tough, sweaty and sometimes painfull but despite all odds we made it to the top and the feeling of getting op there was amazing. PLEASE ENJOY!

When I booked a last-minute ticket to Guatemala on a whim with less than 24 hours before departing for the airport, I felt a lot of things: anxiety, excitement, guilt...For leaving Josh at home to work while I went galavanting, of course. One thing I didn't feel was underprepared. I've spent years collecting the right gear, clothing, and supplies so that if and when an opportunity like this does arise, I won't be stuck scrambling to 15 different stores trying to find the perfect shirt or snack bars or shoes or packs. But what I didn't know was that I wasn't prepared at all. Not for hiking Acatenango in Guatemala.

WE Explore Guatemala, Antigua, & Volcan Acatenango
On this episode of WE|Sail, we take a break from sailing for a few months while hiding out from hurricanes in Guatemala, so we do as much exploring inland as we can, starting with a beautiful little place called Antigua. This quaint little town is centrally located and absolutely covered with color and historic old ruins of some of the first Spanish settlers to arrive here. We spend several days just meandering around and getting to know this amazing Central American town. One of the main attractions here is the several surrounding active volcanoes, one of which erupts hourly, aptly named Volcan Fuego! We join a local tour company to do an overnight trip where we climb Volcan Fuego's nearest and larger neighbor, Volcan Actenango where we are be blessed with amazing views of Volcan Fuego's eruptions all night long! It is an amazing journey and actually much more difficult than any of us expected.
