Eihei-ji, Fukui Prefecture, Japan
Established in 1244 and Japan's most active zen meditation monastery since the late 16th century, Eihei-ji, Temple of Eternal Peace, is about 30 minutes by bus from Fukui and is home to about 50 elders and 250 black-robed trainees. This serene community, set on the slopes of a mountain and surrounded by cedars, is moss-green in summer, and serenaded by cicadas. In winter, snow arrives to transform the complex into a glistening white mountainscape.

The 3 generations Kunitora worked for the Naitō family (内藤), the daimyō of the Yunagaya fief (湯長谷藩) of Mutsu province who had an income of 15.000 koku. The 1st generation Kunitora was a student of Inoue Shinkai (井上真改) and according to transmissions of the Nemoto family (根本), the family to which the Kunitora smiths belonged, he had also studied in Kyōto under a Kinmichi (金道) but it is not mentioned under which Kinmichi. He was active around Jōkyō (貞享, 1684-1688) and as he was a Kinmichi-student, he received
the permission to engrave a chrysanthemum onto his tangs. He forged a dense mokume and tempered a midare, hiro-suguha, notare or midare in nie-deki. His honorary title „Izumi no Kami“ (和泉守) was also granted to the 2nd and 3rd generation Kunitora.

Masamune
Masamune (正宗), also known as Gorō Nyūdō Masamune (五郎入道正宗, Priest Gorō Masamune, c.1264–1343 AD), is widely recognized as Japan's greatest swordsmith. He created swords and daggers, known in Japanese as tachi and tantō respectively, in the Soshu tradition. No exact dates are known for Masamune's life and he has reached an almost legendary status. It is generally agreed that he made most of his swords in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, 1288–1328. Some stories list his family name as Okazaki, but some experts believe this is a fabrication to enhance the standing of the Tokugawa family.
Masamune is believed to have worked in Sagami Province during the last part of the Kamakura Period (1288–1328), and it is thought that he was trained by swordsmiths from Bizen and Yamashiro provinces, such as Saburo Kunimune, Awataguchi Kunitsuna and Shintōgo Kunimitsu.
