The Streets Of Palermo, SICILY - What Are They Like?
Before coming to Sicily we only knew a few things about the island: Sicilians are SICILIANS - not Italians, this is where ice cream (gelato) was invented, and its the birthplace of the notorious mafia.
Once we arrived in Palermo we were stuck by how beautiful the city was. The architecture is dramatic and detailed, with an eclectic mix of architectural periods.
Due to the island being occupied by various cultures over the centuries, there is a unique atmosphere that differentiates Sicily from mainland Italy.
The closest thing we saw to having any relevance to the mafia were ‘addiopizzo’ stickers in shop front windows. These stickers represent a movement established in Sicily fighting against the mafia and discouraging extortion of shopkeepers.
There is so much to see in this relatively small capital, far too much to include in just one video. We have included our favourite sights in this vlog and have tried to capture the atmosphere of the city.

We said goodbye to our jobs, sold all our belongings, and left Australia on a one-way ticket to Shanghai with just each other and our backpacks! We plan to travel the world for a year, see as much as possible, meet as many people as we can, and most importantly MAKE OUR MONEY LAST!
When we left Australia we decided to make travel vlogs to share our journey with our friends and family back home. We also love watching other travel vloggers on YouTube, in particular Kara and Nate, The Endless Adventure, The Way Away, and Flying The Nest.
If you enjoyed this video please SUBSCRIBE so you don’t miss our new videos as they’re released. We also love it when you leave us a COMMENT! :)

Travel Writer Tom Swick and the Italian Anti-Mafia on WLRN Radio
Topical Currents is with South Florida-based travel writer and author Tom Swick, who recounts his trip to Palermo, Sicily in search of Addiopizzo, the modern Anti-Mafia movement. Pizzo is the protection money imposed on businesses by Mafia racketeers... and the addio prefix refers to the grassroots effort to thwart it by avoiding businesses known for mob payoffs.
