May 27, 1960: A dark day in Turkish history
It has been 56 years since the first military coup in modern day Turkey took place: “Dear citizens! As of midnight last night, Turkish armed forces have taken over administration throughout the entire country.” Then Colonel Alparslan Turkes announcing the coup on the radio. In the hours before dawn on May 27th, 1960, the Turkish army announced it had toppled the government.
Prime Minister Adnan Menderes was taken into custody in Kutahya and brought to the capital, Ankara, where members of his cabinet were. Since then there have been 3 more military coups, the last one taking place in 1997. General Cemal Gursel who was among the coup leaders became the president, prime minister and the minister of defense.
10 years before the coup, more than 50% of Turkish citizens had voted The Democrat Party into power
The social and economic policies of the party got them re-elected in 1954 and 1957
In the weeks preceding the coup, protesters took to the streets, while tensions escalated between the government and the opposition
In the wake of the political infighting and civilian unrest, the army stepped in.
It has been alleged that the army colluded with the opposition...
Using the civil unrest as a pretext to the coup
The army accused top Democrat Party leaders of running a dictatorship
The military trials on the island of Yassiada went on for nearly a year
The prime minister, the foreign minister and the finance minister were hanged in September 1961
29 years later the three men Adnan Menderes, Fatin Rustu Zorlu and Hasan Polatkan were posthumously pardoned
Theır remaıns were moved to a mausoleum
The deposed President, Celal Bayar was also condemned to death but was not hanged due to old age.
