Snorkeling Outside of KoOlina Lagoon #1
The water temp was a warm 80F with low swells on the Leeward side of the island. I ventured outside of the lagoon and was able to spot two juvenile turtles (one with a damaged leg), large Whitespotted Surgeonfish, and large Sailfin Tang in addition to several medium Achilles Tang. Inside the lagoon, I was followed by large Striped Mullet, a pair of Threadfin Butterflyfish, several Yellowfin Surgeonfish, a Saddle Wrasse, and a school of Bluestripe Snapper all hoping for a hand out. Next time I swim in front of the Disney resort, I'll bring a granola bar with me to share.

Hawaii Sea Camp Session 1
Here's a look at what we've been up to for the last two weeks at Hawaii Sea Camp. Every summer, teens from all over the US come here to learn scuba diving in the beautiful waters surrounding Kona on Hawaii's Big Island.

Session 2 at Hawaii Sea Camp was the best yet with 14 kids from all across the US learning how to scuba dive, free dive; cliff-jump and bodysurf in the beautiful waters surrounding Kona on Hawaii's Big Island! Don't miss the breath-taking manta ray night dive at the end.
Learn in paradise!
Set in stunning Captain Cook, Hawaii,Hawaii Sea Camp is geared toward young people who are interested in the marine environment, either for recreation or as a prospective career. We run scuba certification, snorkel and marine science programs for four two week sessions during the summer, and for customizable time slots year-round. All levels of PADI certification are offered up to Master Diver, including Open Water referrals (for those just getting started), Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver. Teens can choose to specialize in a variety of skills including underwater photography and videography, deep diving, search and recovery; night diving, etc.
Once the certifications are achieved, HSC campers participate in tropical marine science programs in partnership with the University of Hawaii, helping collect data on marine life to better understand the state of Hawaii's reefs. Next, an excursion is always made to any number of beautiful spots on the Big Island - whether it's bodysurfing at green sands beach, cliff jumping from the southern most point in the US or camping in the stunning Waipio Valley, adventure is our priority!
Each two week session finishes with the manta ray night dive - rated by many sources as the best night dive in the world. You have to see it to believe it.
Not only does Hawaii Sea Camp guide junior high, high school, and college aged students toward their goals in the marine science environment, but strives to instill a sense of pride and leadership that makes them better stewards of our precious oceans.
Aloha!

Skin Diving with Kona Dolphins
Remastered in HD. An amazing encounter with local Hawaiian spinner dolphins from 2 years ago. Why pay for a snorkel boat tour to Captain Cook monument when you can swim across the bay...all the way from Kealakekua Bay State Historic Park beach. En route we run into a super-pod of dolphins who swam with us to the monument and back. Excursion took a few hours of booking it across the deep blue and skin diving. Exhilarating!
Kealakekua Bay - Kayaking and Snorkeling with the Dolphins
On April 19, 2011, Megan and I flew to the Big Island of Hawaii for a weekend of adventure. We spent a morning and afternoon kayaking in Kealakekua Bay, the site where the explorer Captain Cook died in 1779.
We had heard that dolphins frequented the bay and were hoping to see some.
In the late afternoon as we were returning to shore, we saw our first group of dolphins...and then more..and more..all in all we estimated there to be 25 or more dolphins, including cute baby dolphins!
We were treated to a 20 minute show by the dolphins that was mesmerizing and unforgettable. They were jumping and flying through the air, spinning, splashing their fins, and swimming as close as10' from us to get a curious look. At times they came so close we could almost touch them!
Here are some of the highlights. You'll hear me paddling, but pay close attention and you'll hair the dolphins breathing out through their blow holes as they surface. Keep your eyes open, you never know what those dolphins will be up to! :)

In Kauai, visit Waimea Canyon - the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Explore Hawaii's rich culture, its Kings and goddesses plus a hula that was so alluring that the missionaries banned it.
This terrific guide reveals the top dream destination in America - perfect for a wedding or a vacation where you can swim, surf, golf, hike, kayak, parasail, scuba dive, snorkel, sail or just kick back and relax on the beach.
Incredible Travel Planner - See the videos and then plan a spectacular vacation to a land of incredible beauty and fun. The following is a short overview of this enchanting paradise.
Oahu - See Honolulu, Waikiki, the north shore & the Bonsai Pipeline; pineapple fields; Waikiki Aquarium with reef sharks, sea dragons; the Polynesian Cultural Center with dances by native Fiji, Tahiti and other Polynesians. The Bishop Museum has the cloak of Kamehameha, Hawaii's most famous ruler. It was made from feathers of 60,000 birds. At the museum also see models of whaling ships, which were based in Hawaii in the 19th century when they hunted whales throughout the Pacific.
Maui - This island has beautiful golden beaches, shopping and spectacular golf courses. Or take the challenging drive to Hana with its dramatic waterfalls, lush rainforests, and picture perfect views, plus the 7 sacred pools, which almost look like the Garden of Eden. Mount Haleakala is called the House of the Sun and at the top of this mountain, you'll see a crater, which is bigger than Manhattan. It's over 2 miles wide and 7 miles long. For a unique challenge take a bike ride down - one of world's longest downhill bike rides. Iao Valley is one of Hawaii's most spectacular sites. In fact, it's so beautiful that it's been called the Yosemite of the Pacific. Inside the center of this heavenly valley is the stunning Iao Needle, which rises over 1200 feet. Nearby there's a small park, which pays tribute to Hawaii's diverse heritage, including immigrants who came from Korea, Japan and China. There are gardens, and pavilions.
The Big Island - You'll see Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and get a close up look at these stunning displays of nature including explosive volcanoes with lava flows. And see the Thurston Lava tube, which was formed after the lava flows, stopped. The cooler outer layers hardened but the hotter inner layers continue to empty out of the tubes. Then see the town of Hilo, where many cruise ships stop. Nearby are Rainbow Falls and also an even much larger even more stunning 420-foot waterfall. Plus see Hawaii's most sacred areas for their royalty, which includes wooden guardians watching over a sacred temple where over 20 chiefs were buried. This is where there were ceremonies for the high chief, his wives and warriors. It is where Hawaii's chiefs both relaxed and managed the country. Captain Cook was the first European to land in Hawaii. Hawaiians initially thought that he was a God, since his impressive ships appeared during a sacred festival. But quickly, they realized he was a mere mortal. There were fights and Captain Cook was killed. Coffee and bananas are grown here and agriculture still plays an important role in Hawaiian's economy. Also Hawaii has cowboys -- that's right cowboys. Mexicans came to Hawaii in the early 1800s to herd cattle even before cowboys were common in the Western U.S. The largest Ranch was the Parker Ranch which at one point covered almost half million acres. Since this is a young island, it has only a few white sandy beaches. And on this active volcanic island, the sand can be black.
Kauai - See Waimea Canyon, Kauai's most famous site. As you travel through this area, you'll see waterfalls, which are over 700 feet high. Many filmmakers have used this dramatic scenery for films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. The most popular resort along the southern coast is Poipu Beach, which has long stretches of golden sand. See the coconut coast and the north shore near Princeville. It's so impressive, that when they made the movie South Pacific', they filmed it here. Further west at the end of the road is the base of a 1300-foot cliff, and it's where the Na Pali Coast begins.
