Key West Ghost Tour - Hunting Ghosts in the Florida Keys
According to paranormal expert David Sloan, Key West is one of the most haunted cities in the entire United States -- and Sloan should know. He created the island’s first ghost tour in 1996, has authored volumes including “Ghosts of Key West,” and recently researched and launched a unique interactive ghost-hunting tour in historic Old Town Dubbed Sloan’s Key West Ghost Hunt, the 90-minute nightly walking tour spotlights some of the island’s most noteworthy and well-documented spirits. 15 Magical Places in America
The United States of America are home to countless beautiful landscapes and natural wonders so it’s hard and almost unfair to choose only 15 Magical Places. #5 Northern Lights, Alaska
The best place on Earth to experience the magnificence of the northern lights is definitely Alaska. Head to Fairbanks between late August and April, sit back in a heated aurorium cabin or simply walk outside and look up to the sky. Aurora borealis or The Northern Lights are the results of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun’s atmosphere and gaseous particles from Earth's atmosphere. They occur 60 miles above the Earth, making a colorful display of brilliant yellow-green and sometimes even red- purple patterns.
#4 The Wave, Arizona
The Wave is a sandstone formation located in Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. In order to maintain the natural integrity only 20 people per day are allowed to visit The Wave. For that, you will need a day-use permit that you have to get up to 4 months in advance in an on- line lottery, or by lottery the day before visiting. There are no marked trails or signs to guide hikers that have to be prepared also for fierce winds, harsh desert conditions and blowing sand. You ask: Is all that hassle worth it? Definitely yes. Here you can create the most wonderful Instagram- worthy photos that need no filter.
#3 Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
Florida is without a doubt one of the most beautiful US states. Here in the Sunshine State, you have The Dry Tortugas National Park, located only 68 miles west of Key West. You can get there by ferry or seaplane from Key West. The park consists of small archipelago of seven coral islands and Fort Jefferson, a massive yet unfinished fortress made from 16 million bricks. Here you can find abundant sea life, coral reefs, and sunken treasures.
#2 Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The sacred place for Hawaiians is also the most active volcano on Earth. The Kilauea volcano is sometimes called, the world's only drive-in volcano. It produces 250,000-650,000 cubic yards of lava on daily basis ever since January 3rd, 1983. You can take a hike through volcanic craters and watch blistering lava flows meet the sea.
#1 Maroon Bells, Colorado
Just 10 miles from Aspen, Colorado you have the most photographed mountains in the USA. Unmatched mountain scenery created by two peaks in the Elk Mountains called the Maroon Bells and the reflective lake. It took more than 300 million years of sedimentation and erosion to create the Maroon Valley, a natural wonder that truly encapsulates the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

The large painted buoy is a tourist attraction established in 1983 by the city at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street. Cuba is 90 miles south of this point in Key West. The southernmost point was originally just marked with a small sign, which was often moved or taken, the City of Key West erected the now famous concrete buoy in 1983. Today it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.

We suck at bikepacking - Biking to Key West EP1

My Bikepacking Gear
Rack:
Bag:
Sleeping bag (Warm weather):
This, is mile marker 0 off route US-1. It symbolizes the Southernmost point in the continental US, but clearly the house behind it is further South. To me, the real reason to visit mile marker 0 is to drive through the Florida Keys. From downtown Miami, it’s an epic 3 hour drive, starting with skyscrapers and ending in 7 mile long bridges through the Caribbean—or the Gulf of Mexico depending on which car window you’re looking out of.
The final stop is Key West, and it’s worth the trip. If you like coconut trees, flip flops, and stiff drinks, you may find no better place. Of course, relaxation was the last thing on my mind when I agreed to pedal to Key West from my house in Fort Lauderdale. I’m pretty sure it was Alex’s crazy idea, and who could blame him? The poor guy has been off his mountain bike since November, when he dislocated his shoulder. A road bike adventure through the flattest state in the nation would be a piece of cake.
So we threw caution to the wind, did absolutely no research, and retrofitted our road bikes with racks and luggage. Alex had a lot of camping experience, and I went through a road biking phase a few years back. I was no stranger to high mileage. 200 miles in 3 days would be easy. So the goal for day one would be a campsite 90 miles away in Key Largo. As we set out from my house in high spirits, we had no idea how humbling of an experience this ride would be. Alex and I fell short of Key Largo by over 40 miles on day one. Allow me to summarize why that was the case.
Reason 1: Roady miles and bike packing miles are not the same. When you ride for training of for the sake of riding you choose your favorite route. We were forced to ride through Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Hallandale, all of Miami, and Homestead, encountering ridiculous amounts of stop lights, traffic, glass, and general treachery. City miles are slow and frustrating. We were moving at a snails pace, which leads into…
Reason number 2: The worst route ever. I used Google maps to plan a route and tapped the little bicycle icon. This is great for finding the closest bikeway, but terrible for finding directions. Rather than have you ride for a mile on a less than ideal road, Google would rather you get on a ferry. Sometimes it would want us to take a bikeway for a few miles, make a u turn, and backtrack a mile to get on another bikeway—this instead of just hopping over one median. For the record I now know the best route, but I can’t go back in time to Wednesday afternoon, which brings us to…
Reason number 3: A late start. We did some preparation in the morning and moseyed on down to the coffee shop. We didn’t start pedaling until around 11, since we wanted to wait until rush hour was over. I don’t know why it didn’t click that we’d be in South Miami during the second rush hour. Since my calculations were based on roady miles, I figured we’d be in the keys by then, but I didn’t account for all the stops, craploads of extra weight, and….
Reason number 4: Mechanical problems. For the record I did one thing right, and that was buy two really good brand new tires, and a reasonably sturdy rack with panniers. Alexander’s bike was f*cked. His tires were really old, and his rack consisted of 9 bungie cords and some backpacks. The only thing on his bike that worked consistently was the horn. Alex kept getting flats on his rear tire, and it took forever to take on and off the bike due to the rear rack. Between stops to fix the rack, multiple flats, and a detour to restock our supplies, we burnt through 2 hours of daylight, which brings me to…
Reason number 5: Bad luck, which I admit is sort of a cop out for bad planning. Google Maps led us to a really jagged and rough fire road, which was out of the question considering Alex’s tire issues. So we tried to find a way around it and found ourselves trapped. I was going to do it, but Alex was actually the voice of reason. He might have saved both of our lives. During the day, maybe. At night, it was sketchy.
So, 40 miles from Key Largo we decided to throw in the towel. Luckily, motels in Homestead are about the same price as tent sites in the keys. We were pretty bummed out, and admittedly doubtful that we would get to Key West on time. Both of us were on a time constraint, and the next day was looking grimmer and grimmer by the minute. After 50 miles of arduous urban pedaling, we needed something to boost our spirits.

Henry, Lauren, Shawn, Gina, Antony (Gina’s brother) and Gloria (Gina’s Mother) decided to take a trip to Key West to celebrate Gina’s 30th birthday with some fun and shenanigans.
As we had breakfast at the airport and Anthony joked, “Well that escalated quickly”, little did they know what type of adventure they were going to be in for!!
We’re going to start the adventure here, with the Haunted Key West Ghost Tour, which we decided to enjoy one evening. Like any good Haunted Ghost Tour, it starts off in a bar and we roamed the streets of Key West all evening hearing the dark and spooky stories of Key West.
This video starts off with the story of Count Von Cosel and his immortal love and ends with a surprise for Lauren at about 7 minutes in…
MOST DANGEROUS BIKE RIDE OF MY LIFE - Bike packing the Florida Keys Day 1
Seth's Analysis of why we suck at Bikepacking:
Day 2 Sneak Peek:
Instagram:
Facebook:
It's Day 1 of Seth and my bike packing adventure from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West, FL, and I'm already beginning to wonder if this was such a good idea.... (I mean who in their right mind would want to ride road bicycles anyway???)
Day 1 presented us with numerous obstacles to overcome as we realize through experience that we are absolute rookies at bike packing and there are a number of things already that we would do differently. Alas, you live and learn, and that is the spirit of adventure, as things rarely go according to plan on the best adventures.
Today we made our way through the most populated part of our ride: Miami and Hollywood Florida. Our route had us dodging and weaving through traffic in what is without a doubt one of the most dangerous bike rides I have ever been on.
In addition to the traffic, we encountered numerous mechanicals. By we I mean I. My bikes rear tire was quite worn down. This fact, in addition to all the weight being added to it, resulted in numerous flats that caused us some serious time delays.
By the end of the day Seth and I were absolutely exhausted, and already beginning to doubt the plausibility of making it to Key West by Friday. Our legs were dead and we had been tested all day, but our spirits remained high as we talked, laughed, and dined at our BBQ dinner.
Tomorrow brings another day, and a new set of hurdles, but I'm confident that we can handle whatever comes our way.
Cheers to life on two wheels and full of adventure!
Alexander
