The Petrified Forest: The Agate Bridge
Petrified Forest National Park: Agate House and Long Logs Trail
Petrified Forest National Park is a protected area in northeastern Arizona. Within the park are fossilized trees dating back hundreds of millions of years.
I visit the Long Logs trail and see some of the longest sections of petrified trees and also the Agate House, a reconstructed pueblo made out of the fossilized wood.

Our Gear:
Canon G7X Mark II: (it’s amazing and basically sees in the dark)
Canon G7X: (the original is almost as good, but less expensive)
Joby Gorillapod: (fantastic versatile bendy tripod – this is the slightly smaller “action” version that’s easier to travel with and comes with a mount for a camera and a gopro)
Macbook Air: (we edit everything on Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Air, which is light and easy to travel with)
External Hard Drive: (the videos are a little too big for the macbook air to handle, so I edit everything off an external hard drive)

Hiking Onyx Bridge, Petrified Forest, Arizona
Hiking from the Painted Desert Inn to Onyx Bridge in the Black Forest section of the Petrified Forest Wilderness of Apache County, AZ. The petrified wood is not as colorful as First Forest Point ( ) or Jasper Forest Road ( ), but the logs are much longer. If no longer whole, still contiguous. An NPS Off the Beaten Path hike.

The first one was around the Giant Logs Trail which is the only one that has a printed guide with numbered spots to view. It also has a nice scenic overlook at the end.
The second #hike was around Crystal Forest, which contained more interesting views and petrified logs.
We also saw other points of interest like the Agate Bridge and were surrounded by the #PaintedDesert. Check out our other upcoming videos about the Petrified Forest:

Petrified Forest National Park
My June 29, 1996 visit to Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park.
PETRIFIED FORESTS OF ARIZONA (1916)
(Silent) Forest views with the following captions:
“The forest covers many thousands of acres in five separate tracts. The trees grew where they now lie and many standing stumps are visible.”
“Some of these prostrate trees of stone are over 200 feet in length and seven to ten feet in diameter although they are most frequently broken into sections by traverse fracture.”
“The forest is now a national park and thus guarded from vandalism, but there are so many millions of fragments scattered about on every hand that no objection is made to visitors taking away small specimens.”
“One of these huge trunks, its integrity still spared by time, spans a canyon fifty feet wide -- a bridge of jasper and agate overhanging a tree-fringed pool.”
“It is estimated by scientists that these trees grew many millions of years ago, in the dim ages when the Earth was in the process of making and earthquakes, uplifts and subsidences of the surface of the earth were common.”

We were in no hurry to leave, and didn't start moving around in the RV until after 7am. Bennie came buy, we found out that he retired from the BNSF railroad as a dispatcher, and also a photographer. Yes, we swapped a few railroad war stories. He showed me a clock that he made for this state park, and has made several clocks for other NM State Parks he worked in. He & his wife are also avid RV'ers, and have been long before the term RV was coined. Since we changed our minds about going North of I40, Bennie gave us several suggestions on his favorite spots in Arizona, after all he was from there. We are getting close to the Arizona State line on I40 now. 1:40pm 2-6-2015!!
Stopped at the Arizona Tourist Station, and loaded up with brochures of interesting places to visit. Planned out the rest of the days adventures, with a stop at the Petrified Forest National Monument, and made reservations with the Homolovi Ruins State Park. Petrified Forest National Forest/Pained Desert was a beautiful drive through. There was an old car on the section of Route 66. I took a photo of the car and you can see the depressions in the ground of were Route 66 was, and a string of old telephone poles still standing along the side where the old road was. We were told that at 5pm, we needed to exit the park. We were at the petrified bridge at 5pm, and a Ranger kindly reminded us it was time to leave. We arrived at Homolovi State Park at dark, second time we had to set up camp in the dark.

It includes many hiking trails, that take you through parts of the painted desert. These include the Giant Log Trail, Crystal Forest, Blue Mesa, Agate Bridge, Pueblo Ruins, A number of amazing overlooks, and more.

Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, March 14 2017
After visiting the Painted Desert and Puerco Pueblo, we continued on the road towards the Petrified Forest. Between these two areas is a vast wash with a terrific view. You can go hiking out onto the wash and surrounding area. But remember! It is against the law to remove ANY item from a National Forest. Except yourself and loved ones in your vehicle. :)
