What to do in Palermo, Sicily | Italy Travel Guide by Made of Journeys
Palermo is not only a surprisingly beautiful piece of Sicilian history, it's also it's main stop for amazing food, outstanding architecture and lovely people. Watch now!
Blog:
For millennia at the crossroads of civilizations, Palermo delivers a heady, heavily spiced mix of Byzantine mosaics, Arabesque domes and frescoed cupolas. This is a city at the edge of Europe and at the centre of the ancient world, a place where souk-like markets rub against baroque churches, where date palms frame Gothic palaces and where the blue-eyed and fair have bronze-skinned cousins.
Centuries of dizzying highs and crushing lows have formed a complex metropolis. Here, crumbling staircases lead to gilded ballrooms and guarded locals harbor hearts of gold. Just don't be fooled. Despite its noisy streets, Sicily’s largest city is a shy beast, rewarding the inquisitive with citrus-filled cloisters, stucco-laced chapels and vintage stores filled with the threads of faded aristocrats. Add to this Italy’s biggest opera house and an ever-growing number of vibrant, new-school eateries and bars and you might just find yourself suddenly, unexpectedly in love.
We hope you enjoyed watching our video about the contrasting city of Palermo. Please, give us your feedback in the comments session below!

Edilportale tour 2018 | Palermo, 6 marzo

Palermo, Italy - July 19, 2009 - Serenetta Monti - GdP of Rome
Palermo, Italy - July 19, 2009 - At the place where Judge Paolo Borsellino was killed in 1992 - Serenetta Monti - GdP of Rome
Seventeen years have already gone by since the massacre of D'Amelio Street in Palermo, Italy that killed Paolo Borsellino, Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Claudio Traina and Walter Eddie Cosina, i.e. the Judge and his five bodyguards.
Many instigators and perpetrators of the massacre have been identified and prosecuted by Judges and Police. However, a heavy shadow is still cast over the entities outside the Criminal Organization Cosa Nostra that cooperated with it in deciding and carrying out the assassination.
This year, July 19 fell on a Sunday just like 17 years ago, and many citizens of the Italian civil society together with the editorial staff of 19luglio1992.com and Antimafiaduemila.com gave life to a unique popular demonstration not just the usual commemoration. Such demonstration included a series of initiatives aimed at seeking justice and supporting all those Civil Servants who throughout these years have always done their best to turn the universal right to justice into facts.
In this way, our civil society wanted to prevent people who often undeservedly occupy seats in our institutions from coming to D'Amelio Street to pretend sorrow and to make sure that Paolo is really dead as it happened many times in the past. It also wanted to prevent death rituals from being celebrated for those who, like Paolo Borsellino and his young bodyguards, are today more alive than ever.
From D'Amelio Street holding up red diaries, the Red Diary March snaked all the way up to Utveggio Castle, the place from where a hand which wasn't that of a mafia member but that of someone who made a wicked deal with the mafia operated the remote control that tore Paolo and his bodyguards into pieces.

Under the Sicilian Sun
During the month of July, I had the opportunity to accompany the Italian family for which I have been working as an AuPair, to their summer home in Campobello di Mazara, Sicily. As I had never before been to southern Italy, I went into the experience with no expectations beyond the promises of heat and canoli's.
At the end of the month, I had a more first-hand perspective of the island and it's population. While I was there I got to experience the extreme differences that separate it from Northern Italy, from the dialect to the lifestyle. It is an ideal destination to anyone looking to spend a lot of the time sweating, swimming and eating.
Here are some links to the places that I featured in the video and that I highly recommend to anyone that should find themselves the area. Enjoy!
Sicily #1: a summer trip | Syracuse, San Vito Lo Capo and Palermo
What an adventure! Sicily has everything anybody could ask for during holidays: breathtaking views, history to lose sight of and friendly smiling people to meet.
Blog:
Sicily has long been a crossroads and crucible of Mediterranean culture, and the island today is a fascinating palimpsest in which Greek temples, Norman churches and Baroque palazzos emerge from the rich fabric. But it also has natural wonders aplenty, from the smoking craters of Mount Etna to the still relatively undiscovered beaches of the southern coast.
With parts of the island on the same latitude as the North African coast, Sicily has a mild climate that makes it an attractive destination for much of the year: spring and autumn are sheer delight and though high summer (July, August) temperatures really do soar, sea breezes in coastal areas take the edge off the heat.
When to go to Sicily
Bear in mind that Sicily has a much longer warm-weather season than northern and central Italy. If you’re lucky, it’s possible to sunbathe and swim in the sea well into November, and spring starts early: in many areas, the ground is carpeted with wild flowers at the end of February.
The beautiful and unique Palermo, the welcoming and pleasant Siracusa and the wonderful beaches of San Vito Lo Capo.
And don’t get me started on the food – from the famous street food to the pastries and special pastas, it’s a destination in itself.
We hope you enjoyed watching our video about the fabulous Sicily.

Exploring The City Of Catania Italy
Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants.

Greek Temples of Italy
I’m three days into the Rick Steves' Europe Best of Sicily in 11 Days Tour, and each day has been filled with learning. I love being steep on the travelers’ learning curve. And for me, Sicily is a land of eurekas. Our tour just enjoyed our guide’s explanation of a majestic Greek-style temple. Here’s a quick summary of what I learned.

This is Day 7 of my A Hundred Days in Europe series. As I lead tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences all across Europe. I never know exactly what’s next...but it’s always fascinating and inspiring. Follow along at
