Taj Mahal Travel Guide - Agra - India Golden Triangle Tour
Taj Mahal Travel Guide - Agra - India Golden Triangle Tour
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble Islamic mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658) to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal; it also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan himself. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.
Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643, but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal complex is believed to have been completed in its entirety in 1653 at a cost estimated at the time to be around 32 million rupees, which in 2015 would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees (U.S. $827 million). The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.
The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. It is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history. The Taj Mahal attracts 7–8 million visitors a year and in 2007, it was declared a winner of the New7Wonders of the World (2000–2007) initiative.
The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631, to be built in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess who died on 17 June that year, giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction started in 1632, and the mausoleum was completed in 1643, while the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later. The imperial court documenting Shah Jahan's grief after the death of Mumtaz Mahal illustrates the love story held as the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal incorporates and expands on design traditions of Persian and earlier Mughal architecture. Specific inspiration came from successful Timurid and Mughal buildings including the Gur-e Amir (the tomb of Timur, progenitor of the Mughal dynasty, in Samarkand), Humayun's Tomb which inspired the Charbagh gardens and hasht-behesht (architecture) plan of the site, Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb (sometimes called the Baby Taj), and Shah Jahan's own Jama Masjid in Delhi. While earlier Mughal buildings were primarily constructed of red sandstone, Shah Jahan promoted the use of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. Buildings under his patronage reached new levels of refinement.
Tomb
The tomb is the central focus of the entire complex of the Taj Mahal. It is a large, white marble structure standing on a square plinth and consists of a symmetrical building with an iwan (an arch-shaped doorway) topped by a large dome and finial. Like most Mughal tombs, the basic elements are Persian in origin.
The base structure is a large multi-chambered cube with chamfered corners forming an unequal eight-sided structure that is approximately 55 metres (180 ft) on each of the four long sides. Each side of the iwan is framed with a huge pishtaq or vaulted archway with two similarly shaped arched balconies stacked on either side. This motif of stacked pishtaqs is replicated on the chamfered corner areas, making the design completely symmetrical on all sides of the building. Four minarets frame the tomb, one at each corner of the plinth facing the chamfered corners. The main chamber houses the false sarcophagi of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan; the actual graves are at a lower level.

THE TAJ MAHAL | AGRA | INDIA + Agra Fort and train journey to Jaipur
The Taj Mahal in Agra is perhaps the most iconic building in all of India, and in this video we really explore the Taj Mahal in full detail - including some secret viewpoints to see the Taj Mahal! Agra also offers a few other tourist places to visit such as Agra Fort, a massive structure that can be seen from miles away! After our 2 days in Agra, we then caught the AF to AJMER superfast train from Agra fort station to Jaipur Junction to being the next leg of our journey.
Some tips for Agra!
1. The secret viewpoint where we had lunch is called Saniya Palace. It also had amazing food!
2. AF to AJMER superfast train was really comfortable and we really enjoyed it! We booked AC Chair coach tickets at a very reasonable price. We booked all our train tickets using 12go Asia website.
3. The Taj Mahal cost 1300rs each to enter. We highly recommend paying 1300rs to enter the mousoleum as well. The 1100rs ticket will only allow you to walk around the gardens. You won't be able to walk up to the actual building without the more expensive ticket!!!
4. We had friends visit Agra 2 days after we were there and they said the Agra fort was well worth the money! Bugger we missed out :( so if you have the time we also recommend checking out the fort too!

...ABOUT US...
Hi, we are Erin and Francis, aka the Honeymooners! We are a couple travelling the world for a year on our honeymoon.
In 2016 we travelled throughout South East Asia, and trekked all over the Himalayas of Nepal. We documented the entire trip on our GoPro for our family and friends, but decided to post it all onto YouTube just for a bit of fun as well.
We are newlyweds, happily married since June 2019, and are now living out our dream goal we have had since our last overseas trip, of travelling the world for an entire year on our honeymoon. We have worked so hard towards this goal and want to document the entire journey with you all, so you can join us as we leave our footprints all over this beautiful world.
The world we live in is so diverse and rich with culture, yet the more we travel and the more people we meet along the way, we realise that people share so many similarities no matter what their background is. We love showing these similarities while expressing their cultural differences and hope to capture those moments and show the world.

Magic smile tour in India
Shish Mahal (Mirror Palace) Agra fort secret hidden place
Luckily, we were able to enter ##always-closed## the Shish Mahal (Mirror Palace), walls of which are inlaid with tiny mirrors which at that time were worth more than gold.
The ornate white marble pavilion is inlaid with pietra dura and complex mirror-work of the finest quality.
Shish Mahal (Turkish Bath). To the north-east corner of the court in the lower storey is situated the illustrious building Shish Mahal (Palace of Mirror) which is so named because of the fine profuse embellishment of mirror on the arches, walls and the ceilings with irregular geometric and floral patterns in thick stucco relief work covering the walls and ceilings. Most of the glass work was missing but were restored by the Agra Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1978-81. This creates a picturesque scene when lighted with candles. It was constructed in 1637 and served as the luxurious bath of Khas Mahal.
The bath comprises of two chambers, each about 12 m. by 7 m. The inner chamber has apsidal ends and a marble tank with a fountain and the second chamber has also a similar tank in the east wall. Originally the stucco reliefs were painted artistically with mirror and gold. The floor of the chambers was of white marble.
Rayappa Kasi Taj Mahal, Magic in Marble, Agra, India
No amount of words, no exceptional movie scenes & no description in History books can even remotely describe the beauty & magic that The Taj Mahal creates. Taj Mahal is instrumental in putting India on the global map of travel and tourism. It’s not only gorgeous but very mysterious. It’s said that the Taj changes shades with the moods of the weather. No two clicks of The Taj can be the same.
It’s not only a beautiful monument but also one of the most revered & frequented cemetery in the world. Emperor Shah Jahan decided to build this monument as a token of love for wife, Mumtaj Mahal. Today, when people from all over the world come to pay a visit to the Taj, you often hear them talking about the love that Emperor Shah Jahan had for his wife, Mumtaj Mahal. While we ruminate about the story of their eternal love, the emperor & his beloved wife lie together – silently – in their tombs inside the lower level of the main chamber. They lived together & they remain together. They must be still in love for death could not keep them apart for long.

3 Days trip to Delhi & Agra (2018)
Delhi, set on the both sides of river Yamuna, is a glorious & endlessly fascinating city reflecting an incredible blend of both modern, traditional & historical values of India. Delhi is not a state, but rather the National Capital Territory (NCT) of India. Delhi, one of the world’s oldest cities, became India’s capital in 1912 when the British moved the seat of government from Calcutta. Today, the area has become one of India’s most vibrant and fast-growing metros. Delhi has a mixed culture and people of all communities and religions live here.
Delhi is one of the most populated city in the world with a population of 18.98 million. Over the last 10 years, Delhi has gone through a lot of upgradation. It has now better roads, flyovers, shopping malls, entertainment complexes and especially the brilliant metro train – the best & the most convenient way to travel in and around the city. This network of air-conditioned train connects all the important locations in Delhi.
Delhi has many historical monuments like Qutab Minar (the world’s tallest brick minaret), Humayun Tomb, Old Fort (Purana Qila), Jama Masjid, Jantar Mantar, Red Fort, Tuglaqabad Fort, Lotus Temple & many more…

The Complete Agra Red Fort Tour in English | Agra, India | 18D17 Day 3C | India Travel Vlog
You are watching one of my India Travel Videos and today I will be showing you Agra Red Fort in Agra, India.
Agra Fort or Red Fort is located on the bank of the Yamuna Rriver in Agra, India, which used to be part of the Mughal Empires in the 17th century.
It is a massive red sandstone fort that stretches 2.5 km in circumference and had more than 500 buildings inside and lots of underground chambers.
It’s like a city within the boundaries of a fort. Today, only 30 building survived inside the fort.
Agra Red Fort was built by Mughal emperor Akbar and then his grandson Shah Jahan added extensions using marble. The fort has 4 gates and one of them leads to the river. 40,000 workers worked 8 years to build this fort.
Some of the famous places inside the fort:
- A glass palace that has lots of tiny mirrors on the wall.
- The pearl mosque.
- A white marble palace.
- An open arena where emperors used to give visitations to the kings and guests.
- An octagonal tower where emperor Shah Jahan was held as a prisoner by his son. Shah Jahan spent his last few years here with his daughter and looking at the Taj Mahal.
- A black stone bowl that was used as a bathtub by the emperors.
My next video will be in historic sites in Agra like Taj Mahal and Baby Taj.
