E-mail info@ivanhenares.com to reserve a slot on the Agusan Marsh Tour in February 2011. This is a video of our boat nearing the Agusan Marsh Manobo community in Loreto, Agusan del Sur. The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
AGUSAN MARSH Crocodile close encounter | CARAGA | Region 13 | XIII | Agusan Del Sur Day 8 to 9
Agusan Marsh is a protected area in Mindanao where you can find species and aquatic plants that thrive only in this area. It's definitely a journey to reach the marsh. It took a 2 hour drive to head to the port, then taking a 1.5 hour boat ride headed to the marsh. It was all worth it.
Agusan Marsh is home to the Manobo tribe. They live on floating houses, high enough to withstand the changing tides. To go back and forth in different areas of the marsh, they use canoes called barotos. After we took part in the thanksgiving ritual, we began our exploration.
Take a look.
A few months after we wrapped shooting, Lolong, the largest crocodile in captivity, was captured in the very same waters we shot in. Blame it on stars not aligning because it would've been really awesome if we had footage of the giant reptile. Nevertheless this film serves as an introduction to one of the most beautiful places in the Philippines. Shooting this film was a really amazing experience.

INTO THE HEART OF AGUSAN MARSH
Found in the heart of Mindanao's Agusan Basin, Agusan Marsh is one of the most ecologically significant wetlands in the Philippines. Its vast expanse of marsh covers an area roughly the size of Metro Manila. It contains nearly 15 percent of the nation's fresh water resources in the form of swamp forests.
In the very heart of the marsh is a semi-permanent lake where thousands of hectares of lily pads, hyacinths and other hydrophytic plants spread out like an enormous green quilt. In the dark tea-colored waters live untold numbers of catfish, carp, soft-shell fresh water turtles, and crocodiles.

Agusan Marsh Indigenous Cultural Tourism Program
Cultural tourism is a potent tool for poverty alleviation. There is a potential for indigenous communities in the Philippines to benefit immensely from cultural tourism if given the information, proper training, infrastructure and guidance. The program will empower the Agusan Manobo indigenous group at Sitio Panlabuhan, Agusan Marsh to create a sustainable tourism program for their community.
