Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART): Sonoma County Airport - San Rafael (Full Journey)
Finally, experience the first-ever full journey after the opening of Marin and Sonoma Counties' first rail system in nearly 60 years.
Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, better known as SMART, currently runs between San Rafael and Sonoma County Airport, a distance of nearly 45 miles.
Future extensions include the under-construction section to Larkspur, which will provide the all-important link between SMART and the Golden Gate Ferry to San Francisco.
Additionally, the system plans to extend to Cloverdale when funding becomes available, bringing the total track length to 70 miles. Future infill stations include stops at Petaluma North and Novato Downtown.
SMART's history, from its perception to grand opening on August 25, 2017, is tumultuous. SMART became an entity when the state legislature established the SMART District in 2002.
The first attempt at establishing a funding source for the system was in November 2006, when Measure R was voted on by residents of the two counties of Marin and Sonoma. With a combined 65.3% voting in favor of the increase in sales tax, the measure failed by 0.7%
Measure Q, similar to Measure R, was passed in November 2008, with 69.5% of residents voting yes on the quarter-cent sales tax increase.
The task now would be to construct and open the first rail system in the North Bay in nearly 60 years. But the economic downturn came at the worst time for SMART and forced the system to be built in phases, rather than simultaneously.
The SMART District authorized the use of bonds as a funding source, and in 2012, issued $200 million to pay for construction of the project.
Because SMART's route relies almost entirely on track previously used by long-gone railways, crews began work on rebuilding and revitalizing pieces of track along the 43-mile planned route from San Rafael to Sonoma County Airport. Bridges were rebuilt and reinforced, and tunnels were repaired.
As the system inched closer to completion, Nippon Sharyo won the bid to build the 17 DMU (diesel-multiple unit) cars, manufactured in Nagoya, Japan and assembled in Rochelle, Illinois. The first train arrived in Cotati, CA on April 7, 2015.
However, a crankshaft failure on one of Nippon Sharyo's near-identical train sets in Toronto, Ontario, forced the system's opening back to 2017 and recalled all train cars for crankshaft replacement.
Finally, federal approved of SMART's Positive Train Control (PTC) system allowed the system to commence full service on August 25, 2017.
SMART represents a series of successes and setbacks as the project moved slowly, almost painfully, to completion.
It remains to be seen whether the system fulfills its promise of coercing drivers away from Highway 101 to a modern, fast and accessible rail system. One has great reason to hope for the success of Marin and Sonoma counties' first rail system in nearly 60 years.
Final thought: Much of this video can be classified as pure ear-rape. If you do not wish to listen to wailing toddlers, as well as wailing adult toddlers as far as we can tell, feel free to mute the video and put on some music of your choosing. It's a fantastic way to achieve serenity.
Another final thought: Exactly one month from the day this video was shot (Sept. 9), fires tore through much of northern Santa Rosa, Sonoma County and around Napa. This video is dedicated to the lives lost in these disasters, and to the destroyed communities it captures on film.

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART): Larkspur - Novato Downtown (Stations' Opening Day)

December 14, 2019, is an important day in SMART's history. More than two years of service without a direct rail link to the Larkspur ferry terminal ended in this day, when the 2-mile extension south finally opened for revenue service. In addition, Novato Downtown opened as an infill station.
The train filmed on this journey was the third-ever in-service northbound train to stop at Larkspur and Novato Downtown stations. This is also the first video to ever showcase a ride on SMART from Larkspur station.
The Larkspur extension was the key link between SMART rail service and Golden Gate Ferry service to San Francisco at Larkspur Landing. The train platform is a 0.3-mile walk from the ferry terminal.
What the future holds for more SMART expansion includes another infill station at Petaluma North and the extension from Sonoma County Airport to Windsor, Healdsburg and Cloverdale, set to open in 2023. This will extend the system's length to 70 miles.
The current length of the system with the Larkspur extension is around 47 miles from Larkspur to Sonoma County Airport. Such a journey takes approximately 1 hour and 18 minutes.
