This is one of the three Hawaiian islands that I decided to visit. I spent three days there, drove 345 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below.
I think that three days on such a large island is a bit too little. The distances between the points to travel are longer than on other Hawaiian islands.
Big Island, or Hawaiʻi Island is the largest and the southeasternmost island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island of Hawaiʻi is the third largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. Administratively, the whole island encompasses Hawaiʻi County. The county seat and largest city is Hilo where I lived.

Hilo, Hawaii - Rainbow Falls (2018)
Hilo is the largest settlement and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States, which encompasses the Island of Hawaiʻi. The population was 43,263 at the 2010 census.
Hilo is the county seat of the County of Hawaiʻi and is in the District of South Hilo. The town overlooks Hilo Bay, at the base of two shield volcanoes, Mauna Loa, an active volcano, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and the site of some of the world's most important ground-based astronomical observatories. Much of the city is at some risk from lava flows from Mauna Loa. The majority of human settlement in Hilo stretches from Hilo Bay to Waiākea-Uka, on the flanks of Mauna Loa.
Hilo is home to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi, as well as the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula that takes place annually after Easter. Hilo is also home to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, one of the world's leading producers of macadamia nuts. The town is served by Hilo International Airport.

???? HAWAIIAN STYLE CAFE IN WAIMEA, BIG ISLAND HAWAII - MY HAWAII TRAVEL VIDEOS
After the visit at the farmers market in Waimea, we had breakfast at the Hawaiian Style Cafe. IT'S A MUST! Make sure to order local Kona coffee, POG (passion fruit, orange and guava) juice - it is the best juice I've ever had. Also, just for fun, order the giant pancakes and of course - THE LOCO MOCO! There is loco moco with mainland beef, so make sure to request the one made with local beef.
Enjoy!

Beautiful drive on the Big Island - Day 1 in Hawaii
We explored the beautiful Hamakua Coast and Akaka Falls State Park!
-= Day 1 Itinerary (starting from Hilo) =-
- Breakfast in Hilo at Ken's House of Pancakes
** Onomea Scenic Drive **
** Akaka Falls State Park **
- Sample malasadas in Honokaa at Tex Drive In
- Waipi'o Valley overlook and beach hike
Our first day in the Big Island started out nice and rainy. You can see in the video that I was a bit bummed, but we soldiered on in spite of the weather and were well rewarded. By the time we reached the falls, we were literally dancing in the rain :-)
After a big Hawaiian breakfast in Hilo we headed north up Highway 19 towards our first destination, the scenic drive along Onomea Bay. Look for a sign labeled Scenic Drive between mile markers 7 and 8, and then make a right hand turn and follow Old Mamaloha Hwy for 4 miles. The road twists in and out of the lush rainforest while hugging the coast, traversing multiple one lane bridges along the way. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens are a popular stop over in the middle -- we didn't linger too long because of the rain though. If you are lucky and have great weather, check out this site for ideas to make the most of this amazing drive: You can also stop for a fruit smoothie along the way:
Our next stop was at beautiful Akaka Falls State Park, which is a 10 minute side trip off the main highway. Pay the $5 dollar parking fee and then follow the paved trail counter-clockwise. You'll be treated with an up close view of the rain forest and scenic overlooks over Kahuna Falls (100 ft) and Akaka Falls (442 ft). You may need to hang out for awhile if the falls are shrouded by mist and wait for the view to clear. One benefit of arriving in the rain -- we mostly had the trail to ourselves!
Our route up the Hamakua Coast:
