Hellbenders Released in Ohio
Call them snot otters, devil dogs, mud cats, mollyhuggers or Allegheny alligators but a team of Ohio conservationists are dedicated to making certain the endangered eastern hellbender is never called extinct.
The first release of human-reared hellbenders in Ohio occurred on Jun. 15, 2012 and marks an important step in the Ohio Division of Wildlife's Conservation Plan to reverse the precipitous decline of the species by expanding their range into previously occupied streams to eventually establish multiple self-sustaining populations in Ohio.
The nine released hellbenders were reared in a dedicated hellbender facility at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium from eggs collected in 2007 by the Oglebay Good Zoo (Wheeling, WV). They were released into a stream in eastern Ohio where hellbenders were once found. The stream was once severely impacted by pollution but has since recovered and is one of the highest quality waterways in the state.
Scientists from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources released the hellbenders after Zoo veterinarians performed health screenings and surgically implanted radio-transmitters to enable the animals to be tracked. Blood samples and skin swabs will be collected from the released hellbenders at the end of the summer and compared with those collected prior to the release. Veterinarians from the Columbus Zoo and the Wilds have been conducting research on the health of Ohio and West Virginia hellbenders since 2006. Data from this project will inform future hellbender reintroductions in Ohio.
The release of the hellbenders is the culmination of a partnership involving several Ohio institutions and agencies. Since 2006, the Ohio Hellbender Partnership has been regularly meeting to discuss hellbender conservation in the state. The partnership includes representatives of:
· Ohio Division of Wildlife
· Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
· the Wilds
· Oglebay Good Zoo
· Ohio EPA
· Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District
· Belmont County Soil and Water Conservation District
· United States Fish and Wildlife Service
· Toledo Zoo
· Akron Zoo
· Ohio University, Eastern
Larval hellbenders from an egg mass collected in Ohio in 2011 are currently being reared at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and will be used for future releases. The partnership's capacity to rear hellbenders is being increased through renovations and expansions of facilities in Ohio zoos.
The eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis) is the largest amphibian in Ohio and one of the largest salamanders in the world, reaching a total length of up to 25 inches and weighing nearly three pounds. With their wrinkled body and tiny eyes, the hellbender is supremely adapted to a life spent mostly under large rocks in rivers and large creeks where they feed on crayfish and take in oxygen through their highly vascularized skin.
A 2006-2009 survey of the eastern hellbender in Ohio determined an 82% decline in the relative abundance of individuals in streams where they were found during surveys conducted in the mid-1980s. In the Ohio watersheds where hellbenders remain, populations consist of only old, large individuals, indicating the lack of successful reproduction. Most remaining populations in Ohio do not appear self-sustaining and without intervention the hellbender will likely disappear from Ohio waterways.
The hellbender is an important part of Ohio's natural heritage and their presence indicates clean water and healthy habitats. Causes of the hellbender's decline include impoundments (dams), excessive siltation, pollution, disease, and persecution and collection. The species ranges from New York to Georgia and west to Missouri and were once found throughout the Ohio River drainage basin, including the Ohio River. Similar population declines have been noted by researchers throughout the hellbender's range, and the species is considered threatened or endangered in most states.
Funding for this project was provided by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service through a State Wildlife Grant, donations to the Division of Wildlife's Diversity Program, and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's Conservation Fund.

Driving TOLEDO Downtown 4K
Toledo is a city in and the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio, United States. Toledo is in northwest Ohio, at the western end of Lake Erie bordering the state of Michigan. The city was founded in 1833 on the west bank of the Maumee River, and originally incorporated as part of Monroe County, Michigan Territory. It was re-founded in 1837, after conclusion of the Toledo War, when it was incorporated in Ohio. After the 1845 completion of the Miami and Erie Canal, Toledo grew quickly; it also benefited from its position on the railway line between New York City and Chicago. The first of many glass manufacturers arrived in the 1880s, eventually earning Toledo its nickname: The Glass City. It has since become a city with an art community, auto assembly businesses, education, healthcare, and local sports teams.
The population of Toledo as of the 2010 Census was 287,128 making it the 71st-largest city in the United States. It is the fourth-most-populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio, after Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. The Toledo metropolitan area had a 2010 population of 608,145, and was the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the state of Ohio, behind Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, and Akron.
The city straddles the Maumee River at its mouth at the southern end of Maumee Bay, the westernmost inlet of Lake Erie. The city is located north of what had been the Great Black Swamp, giving rise to another nickname, Frog Town. Toledo sits within the borders of a sandy oak savanna called the Oak Openings Region, an important ecological site that once comprised more than 300 square miles (780 km2). Summers are very warm and humid, with July averaging 73.5 °F (23.1 °C) and temperatures of 90 °F (32 °C) or more seen on 16.5 days.[25] Winters are cold and somewhat snowy, with a January mean temperature of 25.5 °F (−3.6 °C), and lows at or below 0 °F (−18 °C) on 6.2 nights.[25] The spring months tend to be the wettest time of year, although precipitation is common year-round. November and December can get very cloudy, but January and February usually clear up after the lake freezes. July is the sunniest month overall.[26] About 37 inches (94 cm) of snow falls per year, much less than the Snow Belt cities, because of the prevailing wind direction. Temperature extremes have ranged from −20 °F (−29 °C) on January 21, 1984, to 105 °F (41 °C) on July 14, 1936.
Before the industrial revolution, Toledo was important as a port city on the Great Lakes. With the advent of the automobile, the city became best known for industrial manufacturing. Both General Motors and Chrysler had factories in metropolitan Toledo, and automobile manufacturing has been important at least since Kirk started manufacturing automobiles,[42] which began operations early in the 20th century. The largest employer in Toledo was Jeep for much of the 20th century. Since the late 20th century, industrial restructuring reduced the number of these well-paying jobs.
The University of Toledo is influential in the city, contributing to the prominence of healthcare as the city's biggest employer. The metro area contains four Fortune 500 companies: Dana Holding Corporation, Owens Corning, The Andersons, and Owens Illinois. HCR Manor Care is a Fortune 1000 company headquartered in Toledo. One SeaGate is the location of Fifth-Third Bank's Northwest Ohio headquarters.

Man's 10,000 Bottle Deposit Scheme Could Mean Prison
Bottle deposit laws are designed to encourage people to recycle by charging shoppers a small deposit on bottles that they can get back once the bottle is recycled. But a Michigan man recently tried to game that system to get more money. Brian Everidge purchased 10,000 bottles in New York, which charges residents a 5 cent deposit. He then took the bottles to Michigan, which gives residents a 10 cent refund. But it turns out that attempting to collect a deposit on bottles purchased in another state is illegal under the Michigan law. And now, the man's $500 scheme could land him in prison.
