The incomplete Alai Minar near Qutub Minar
Alauddin Khilji started building the Alai Minar, after he had doubled the size of Quwwat ul-Islam mosque. He conceived this tower to be two times higher than Qutb Minar in proportion with the enlarged mosque. The construction was however abandoned, just after the completion of the 24.5-metre-high (80 ft) first-storey core; soon after death of Ala-ud-din in 1316, and never taken up by his successors of Khilji dynasty. The first storey of the Alai Minar, a giant rubble masonry core, still stands today, which was evidently intended to be covered with dressed stone later on. Noted Sufi poet and saint of his times, Amir Khusro in his work, Tarikh-i-Alai, mentions Ala-ud-din's intentions to extend the mosque and also constructing another minar.
Ala-ud-din conceived a very ambitious construction programme when he decided to build the second tower of victory when he returned in triumph from his Deccan campaign. However, the Sultan died before even the first storey was finished, and the project was abandoned. Ala-ud-din felt compelled to increase even further the size of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. His scheme called for increasing the size of the enclosure four times, providing ceremonial entrance gateways on each side, and a great minar, twice the size of the Qutb. This is the unfinished base of the mammoth tower begun by Ala-ud-din Khilji intended to give competition to Qutb Minar.
Qutub Minar also Qutub Meenar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Delhi, India. The Qutub Minar was constructed with red sandstone and marble, and is the tallest minaret in India, with a height of 72.5 metres (237.8 ft), contains 379 stairs to reach the top, and the diameter of base is 14.3 metres whereas the last storey is of 2.7 metres. The Construction was commenced by qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1192 and completed by Iltutmish. It is surrounded by several other ancient and medieval structures and ruins, collectively known as Qutub complex. Tradition assigns the erection of the Pillar to Anang Pal, whose name it bears, with the date 1052 C.E.
Qutab Minar is the nearest station on the Delhi Metro. A picture of the minaret also features on the Travel Cards issued by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Ruthless Sultan Ala-ud-Din Khalji's unfulfilled wish : Incomplete Alai Minar near Qutub Minar
The Alai Minar is an incomplete monument that lies within the Qutb complex in South Delhi. Sultan Ala-ud-Din Khalji was an over ambitious Sultan of the Khilji dynasty and won many wars and battles. After a win from one of his Deccan campaigns, the Sultan dreamt of constructing a huge Tower or Minar to commemorate his victory.

Alai Minar is one of many historical structures, present in Qutub Complex, situated in Indian capital New Delhi. It was built during Alauddin Khilji's rule in Delhi. He wanted to built his tower double in height than that of Qutub Minar, the world's tallest brick minarate in the world. The construction of Alai Minar was however stopped in 1316 due to the death of Alauddin Khilji. Only first storey core of the minarate, measuring 24.5 metres in height, was ready by that time but nobody in his dynasty, who ruled after his death, tried to built it in the way he dreamt of.

The Qutb complex are monuments and buildings from the Delhi Sultanate at Mehrauli in Delhi in India.
QUTB MINAR:
The Qutb Minar is inspired by the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan, it is an important example of early Afghan architecture, which later evolved into Indo-Islamic Architecture. The Qutb Minar is 72.5 metres (239 ft) high, has five distinct storeys, each marked by a projecting balcony carried on muqarnas corbeland tapers from a diameter 14.3 metres at the base to 2.7 metres at the top, which is 379 steps away. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with surrounding buildings and monuments.
ALAI DARWAZA-
The Alai Darwaza is a main gateway from southernside of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque.It was built by the second Khalji Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khaljiin 1311 AD, who also added a court to the pillared to the eastern side. The domed gateway is decorated with red sandstone and inlaid white marble decorations, inscriptions in Naskh script, latticed stone screens and showcases the remarkable craftsmanship of the Turkish artisans who worked on it. This is the first building in India to employ Islamic architecture principles in its construction and ornamentation.
Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque:
Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque (Might of Islam) (also known as the Qutub Mosque or the Great Mosque of Delhi) was commissioned by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, founder of the Mamluk or Slave dynastyand built using the ruins of 27 temples. It was built over the site of a large temple located in the centre of the Hindu citadel.
IRON PILLAR:
The iron pillar is one of the world's foremost metallurgical curiosities. The pillar, 7.21-metre high and weighing more than six tonnes, was originally erected by Chandragupta II Vikramaditya (375–414 AD) in front of a Vishnu Temple complex at Udayagiriaround 402 AD, and later shifted by Anangpal in the 10th century CE from Udaygiri to its present location. Anangpal built a Vishnu Temple here and wanted this pillar to be a part of that temple.

The tomb of the Delhi Sultanate ruler, Iltutmish, a second Sultan of Delhi (r. 1211–1236 AD), built 1235 CE, is also part of the Qutb Minar Complex in Mehrauli, New Delhi.

The Alai Minar is an unfinished tower in the Qutub Complex, construction of which was started by Alauddin Khilji. After Khilji had doubled the size of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque he decided to constructed a tower which would be twice the height of the Qutub Minar. Construction of the Alai Minar came to a halt in 1316 following the death of Alauddin Khilji.

This unfinished Minar with its extant Height of 24.5 Meters, was commenced by alaudding Khalji (A.D. 1296-1316). It had hardly reached its first storey when he died. He had conceived this minar to be double the height of the QUTB-MINAR, In order to be Proportionate with THE Quwwatul Islam Masjid , as extended by him.

फिल्म पद्मावत को लेकर देशभर में हंगामा मचा हुआ है लेकिन आपको ये जानकर हैरानी होगी कि इस फिल्म में नरपिशाच की तरह नजर आने वाले सुल्तान अलाउद्दीन खिलजी ने दिल्ली में कुतुब मीनार के पास ही इससे दोगुनी ऊंचाई की इमारत बनाने की कोशिश की थी जिसमें वो बुरी तरह से नाकाम रहा। उसकी अधूरी मीनार आज अलाई मीनार के नाम से जानी जाती है और इसको देखकर ऐसा लगता है जैसे किसी ने सुल्तान के डर से पत्थरों का ढेर जमा कर दिया हो।
