Alaska Marine Highway- trip to Alaska
What is the future of the Alaska Marine Highway System?
Governor Dunleavy has proposed major cuts to the Alaska Marine Highway System. Under the current funding proposal, the ferry system would see a 75% cut on July 1 and would cease operations for the winter beginning on October 1. We spoke with several legislators about how the proposed cuts would impact their districts and constituents.
A big thanks to Senator Bert Stedman, Senator Jesse Kiehl, and Representative David Eastman for talking to us for this story.

Come aboard, and take a full tour of the Malaspina, an AMHS ferry, as we travel from Prince Rupert to Juneau through Alaska’s Inside Passage. Alaska Ferry System - Marine Highway Ferry System And Station Bellingham Washington
The Alaska Ferry also known as the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System services over 30 locations and links the great state of Alaska with the lower 48 states with weekly service to Bellingham Washington.
The the Alaska Ferry arrives each friday morning it is greeted by Bellingham Residents at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in the city's Fairhaven district. The Alaska Ferry can carry 88 cars and approximately 500 passengers. The ferry is more about transportation than luxury but there is still a cafeteria, and cocktail lounge. The Alaskan Ferries that make overnight trips typically have guest cabins available at an additional charge but in summer months many passengers choose to just pitch a tent on the upper decks or sleep under the stars in a sleeping bag.

Alaska Marine Highway Ferries
Alaska Marine Highway System has been operating since the mid 1960's.
A state run ferry service. This presentation has been put together, following my cruise of Alaska in 2019. Featuring some of the ferries i photographed in port or passing. That serve the 3,500 miles of the Alaska ferry routes.
Some of which are quite old, but nice to see them still running. They will need to be replaced in the not too distant future.
Including two new locally built ferries, which have / will replaced some of the older ferries.
If you have enjoyed viewing this video please give it a thumbs up!
Thanks

Seeing the Aleutians by Ferry - the MV Tustumena, July 2019
Jon, Joy, and Paul Sharpe took the MV Tustumena from Homer to Dutch Harbor and back in early July 2019. This was a bucket list item for all of them for decades. Admittedly, the weather was phenomenal, so what you see in this video may not represent accurately the conditions someone might encounter if they book a trip in the future. At one point the Captain/Pilot on the ferry got on the mic to tell us that in 15 years he could count on one hand the number of times he'd seen Frosty Peak that clearly. That was the story for much of the voyage. They told us before we went that the rain is usually horizontal, to bring lots of dramamine, and that the Tustumena is famous for rolling with the waves. We ended the trip with all of our dramamine unopened (four packages of it). The Tustumena does roll quite a bit, even in a moderate swell (got to 10 feet or so) on a beautiful day, but it didn't bother us - we were too focused on looking at the scenery. We slept on the deck on the way out to Dutch Harbor, but on the return we booked a four bunk stateroom. The round trip fare for an adult was $812, and for a senior it was $615 (approximately...can't remember exactly). The stateroom, one-way was $502. The Tustumena is scheduled to be replaced, perhaps next year. And, of course, the whole state ferry system could be drastically reduced by Governor Dunleavy who is dealing with a very difficult budget situation. Both of those circumstances made us decide to take this trip now, rather than wait. It may not exist much longer.

I recently took the ferry from Juneau to Haines in Alaska. I recorded a video of the boat and describes some of the surrounding areas. I showed the ferry food and tables.
To ride the ferry one way without a car it cost me $50. I then rented a car and drove to Anchorage for my flight home. I did lots of hiking, exploring and fishing before going home though.
I hope this video is helpful, thanks for watching!
