One of our favorite spots in Alaska's Southeast region is a wildlife center in Sitka. The Alaska Raptor Center receives birds from all over the state and rehabilitates them back to the wild. Meanwhile, visitors get an uncommonly close look at these fascinating birds.

This is video from our excursion to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, Raptor Center, and Totem poles. In this video we pick up where we left off after our nature walk through the Tongass rainforest. We watched a native Alaskan tribesman carving a totem pole, visited an historic lumber mill, and then the Alaska Raptor Center. This was the first stop on our Northbound Alaskan cruise sailing out of Vancouver in July. This was one of the excursions offered by the Norweigan Cruise ship. We learned a lot on this tour, the guide was quite knowledgable and shared a lot of information, overall a great experience! The video of the Tongass Rainforest nature walk is here:
National Historical Park and RAPTOR CENTER! - Sitka, Alaska
We visited Sitka, Alaska and toured the National Historical Park with its beautiful temperate rain forest and totem poles. We saw a huge mass of salmon making their way upstream to spawn. And we finished off with a visit to the amazing Alaska Raptor Center, where they rehabilitate injured raptors for release into the wild.

Bald Eagle Call - Alaska Raptor Center
These Bald Eagles are showing off their beautiful call at the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka, AK. The center is the state's only full-service avian hospital and rehabilitation facility. It treats about 200 wild birds each year.

Happy Bald Eagle called Sitka
This beautiful and happy bald eagle Sitka has been with us since 2002.
Sitka Fun Fact: She loves to steal the hose during cleaning and spray people with it. She also lovingly pulls on the hair, ears, and nose of our handlers and her preferred location to clean all the fish leftovers off her beak is on her handler’s arm.
Sitka’s Story: Sitka was sent to ARC after being hit by a car in Ninilchik, a village on the Kenai Peninsula. She suffered from multiple injuries, including a hole in her right patagium (the fleshy part of the wing) and severe damage to her right hallux (rear toe). Her right wing permanently droops and her hallux had to be amputated, leaving her unable to effectively grasp prey. Although she is partially flighted, she is non-releasable because she would not be able to hunt successfully in the wild.
