Alaska Adventure | Day 45 | Swan lake forest fire, Hwy re-opens
Getting ready to head out from Sterling, AK where we stayed at Morgan's Landing State Recreation camp site. We stayed here for the night due to the Sterling Hwy being closed (btw mile 55-75) due to the Swan Lake fire, in the direction of Valdez, AK.
But, as we drive a mile or two on the Sterling Hwy, it becomes obvious that the forest fires are still in progress and traffic is going to progress slowly. There were active fires on the edge of the road and smoke was light to heavy for many miles.
Up to Cooper landing the fires took many pine trees as they were falling due to the lack of underbrush to hold their root fast. Traffic kept moving as a snails pace in spots but quickly is less smokey areas.
North of Girdwood the valleys were filled with smoke, and as we arrived in Anchorage we could see the effects of the McKinley fire that had taken 55 structures already. The entire area was smoke filled with visibility 1/2 mile in some locations. The moutain tops had disappeared and valleys were completely filled with smoke.

Kenai Alaska Wildfire 2019: Swan Lake Fire Operations Update By John Glover
Watch this thorough video update of the 18,700 acre #SwanLakeFire burning in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge by Alaska IMT2 Operations Chief John Glover. Filmed in Sterling, Alaska on June 19th 2019 with photos and videos contributed by fire personnel. Many partners and cooperating agencies are involved with managing this lightning caused wildfire including Kenai Peninsula Borough, City of Kenai Fire Department, City of Soldotna, the City of Sterling and many more.
------- From the written update -------
Hand crews supported by aerial resources have dedicated all efforts to limit the amount of fire growth towards Sterling and the Sterling Highway corridor. Tuesday evening, the Gannett Glacier Type 2 Initial Attack Crew took advantage of a favorable weather window in the evening that allowed firing operations to proceed on the eastern flank. The goal of these operations is to remove fuel sources before the fire approaches, and to begin mop up as soon as possible to create a strong control line. With the need for the firing skills and expertise of hotshot crews, five crews from the Lower 48 were ordered Tuesday and will begin arriving later today to bolster the efforts of the four Alaskan crews currently engaged in suppression efforts.

Fire activity is anticipated today on the eastern flank of the fire where continuous black spruce stands are very receptive to fire spread. The short- and long-term goal is to prevent the fire from getting established east of Mystery Creek Road. Aerial supervisors will assess the fire behavior and will direct helicopter bucket work and air tankers as needed to keep this edge in check. Fire crews will continue to look for opportunities to utilize burnout operations and will begin the process of mopping up control lines.
Firefighters and fire prevention specialists are visiting Sterling community neighborhoods to assess the readiness of homeowners. There is currently no immediate threat to Sterling but now is the time to be prepared. More information can be found at Firewise.org, Alaska.gov/fire/firewise or Wildland Fire – Ready Set Go!

Plan For Significant Travel Delays on the Sterling Highway MP 62-72 . Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, top off gas tanks, bring extra ice for fish, food and snacks, and be prepared for long travel delays as crews battle the 37,430 acre #SwanLakeFire.
Fire crews are poised to take advantage of a significant wind shift predicted for today. If conditions allow and all of the support resources are in place, firefighters will initiate a strategic burn north of the Homer-Electric transmission line north of the Sterling Highway between mileposts 62-72. The Swan Lake Fire is estimated to be 2 miles from the Sterling Highway near Sterling, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula.
At the request of fire managers, Homer Electric was asked to de-energize the transmission line that connects Bradley Lake Hydroelectric facility to the rest of the Railbelt utilities. Expect Travel Delays on the Sterling Highway: #SwanLakeFire Breaking News Update
Due to an increase in fire activity of the 32,300 acre Swan Lake Fire, pushed by a north-northwest wind is estimated to be 2 miles from the Sterling Highway near Sterling, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula.
Firefighters were moved to safe areas as smoke obscured the location of the flaming front. In the interest of public safety the Alaska Interagency Incident Management Team asked for traffic to be delayed between Mileposts 58 and 75. As the Alaska State Troopers and the Alaska Department of Transportation were moving into place it became apparent that the fire would not reach the highway Sunday evening and traffic was allowed to resume.
The weather has been hot and dry with persistent winds from the northwest. This hot and dry weather pattern is expected for the next several days. The public needs to remain vigilant.

Chain of Events on the Sterling Highway, Night of August 25
Last Sunday night the Sterling Highway was closed after fire activity picked up near the road. As the highway was being cleared of remaining traffic, some travelers passed through an area where there was very active fire and heavy smoke. After accounts of this spread on social media, many people appropriately asked how this chain of events unfolded. Great Basin Incident Management Team 1 has prepared this explanation.
Live - 9am August 20 2019 McKinley Fire Update from the Crew Camping “Base Camp”
Firefighters on the McKinley Fire (#738) are continuing efforts today to assess and protect structures on the 3,000-acre fire burning between Willow and Caswell. An evacuation order remains in effect for the fire area from Mileposts 82 to 91 of the Parks Highway.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office and Alaska State Troopers are working to account for persons in the evacuation area. If you know of persons who may be unaccounted for please contact the Matanuska-Susitna Borough call center at 907-861-8326. If you have questions about the McKinley or Deshka Fires, or are asking about the status of your structure, please call the Mat-Su Area Forestry Information Hotline at 907-761-6233.
The Alaska Type 2 Interagency Incident Management Team assumed management of the fire Monday evening and is basing operations at the Willow Community Center. Pilot cars are in place with National Guard personnel holding traffic on the Parks Highway at milepost 71 and 99. Motorists should prepare for delays but topping off on gas, being prepared, bringing snacks and water, and allowing for several hours of extra travel time in either direction. The Parks Highway remains open, but motorists are warned to expect both long delays and intermittent closures depending upon fire activity.
The Alaska Railroad has been working to clear downed trees and debris from along the tracks. Limited service is expected to begin today.
The gusty north winds that fanned the fire and drove it south along the Parks Highway corridor Sunday night have subsided, giving firefighters an opportunity to work directly along the fireline. They will be getting extra help today as additional engines arrive from Fairbanks and additional crews arrive from the Lower 48.
The McKinley Fire began Saturday near Milepost 91 of the Parks Highway. An estimated fifty structures were destroyed in the fire Sunday night. The Alaska Department of Public Safety, State Fire Marshal, and Alaska State Troopers are working with the Alaska Division of Forestry and Matanuska Susitna Borough to get a better estimate of structures burned and determine how many were residences.

The Cruise of the Snark Audiobook by Jack London | Full Audiobook with subtitles
The Cruise of the Snark (1913) is a memoir of Jack and Charmian London's 1907-1909 voyage across the Pacific. His descriptions of surf-riding, which he dubbed a royal sport, helped introduce it to and popularize it with the mainland. London writes: Through the white crest of a breaker suddenly appears a dark figure, erect, a man-fish or a sea-god, on the very forward face of the crest where the top falls over and down, driving in toward shore, buried to his loins in smoking spray, caught up by the sea and flung landward, bodily, a quarter of a mile. It is a Kanaka on a surf-board. And I know that when I have finished these lines I shall be out in that riot of colour and pounding surf, trying to bit those breakers even as he, and failing as he never failed, but living life as the best of us may live it.
