On Saturday, August 14th, we flew from Minneapolis to Anchorage 1st class using frequent flyer miles. The next day we drove Hwy 1 to Wasilla, then Hwy 3 (George Parks Hwy) towards Denali. We stopped at the Iditarod HQ and the Veterans Memorial, then camped at Denali State Park.

Attu Island Conmemoration (Includes FR benches)
In 1943, American and Japanese forces fought for 20 days in Attu, Alaska. This U.S. Forest video conmemorates the sacrifices and shows the ceremony on the site overlooking the battle site that includes to Forever Redwood VA Benches built for the site.
Seventy years after young men fought and died on remote, windswept Attu Island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) honored their sacrifices with the dedication of a new interpretive site to tell the story of WWII in the Aleutians. Captain William Pepper (U.S. Navy veteran) of the USFWS research vessel 'R/V Tiglax' with an honor guard of three other veterans from the ship's crew conducted the dedication ceremony in June, complete with taps played on a harmonica in the absence of a bugler.

Kayaking & Camping Byer's Lake, Alaska | The John Budnik Show E:8
I decided to tent camp at Byer's Lake over the weekend. There is a nice state recreation area that is available on a first come, first serve basis for spots. It is located about mile 147 of the Parks Highway. The lake was beautiful from the kayak with temperatures well above 70 degrees. I should have brought sunscreen though! On a clear day, Denali (Mount McKinley) can be seen in the distance.
I attempted to fish, but did not catch anything. I spoke with a park ranger as I arrived and he said there were lake trout and burbot but they were close to 90 feet deep! I didn't have that much lead. I did see these friendly swans, however. There are easy hiking trails available that go around the lake and to a veteran's memorial just north of the recreation area.
