Albert Communal Cemetery Extension
Albert was held by French forces against the German advance on the Somme in September 1914. It passed into British hands in the summer of 1915; and the first fighting in July 1916, is known as the Battle of Albert, 1916. It was captured by the Germans on the 26th April 1918, and before its recapture by the 8th East Surreys on the following 22nd August (in the Battle of Albert, 1918,) it had been completely destroyed by artillery fire. The Extension was used by fighting units and Field Ambulances from August 1915 to November 1916, and more particularly in and after September 1916, when Field Ambulances were concentrated at Albert. From November 1916, the 5th Casualty Clearing Station used it for two months. From March 1917, it was not used (except for four burials in March, 1918) until the end of August 1918, when Plot II was made by the 18th Division. During the Second World War the extension was used again, when the French moved into it British casualties from isolated graves in and around Albert. There are now 862 Great War and 25 Second World War casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, 12 Great War casualties and 8 Second World War casualties are unidentified. Five graves, destroyed by shellfire, are now represented by special memorials. Two soldiers known to be among the casualties buried here, but whose graves could not be identified, are commemorated by special memorials, inscribed, Known to be buried in this cemetery. This cemetery was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Several notable burials are here, including Major Gordon Hamilton Southam (sixth son of Canadian newspaper publisher William Southam), Brigadier-General Henry Clifford (son of Major General The Hon. Sir Henry Clifford, VC, KCMG, CB), Lieutenant-Colonel Victor Carl Buchanan DSO, Lieutenant-Colonel Roland Playfair Campbell, and Lieutenant-Colonel Robert McDonnell Thomson.

Achiet Le Grand Communal Cemetery
A visit to the grave of Private Robert Livingstone Little, 29795, 2nd Battalion, Otago Regiment who was killed in action on 24th August 1918. The grave is in Achiet Le Grand Communal Cemetery, which I visited on behalf of Robert's New Zealand family.
Soldier Monuments in Albert France
Whilst on a visit to the Somme battlefields I stopped off in the town of Albert. As a monument to the soldiers who fought in the battles in the areas during the First World War there are a number of statues have been erected throughout the town. These include a French soldier (in from of the train station), a Scottish piper, an Australian and a British 'tommy' (around the Place d'Armes) and a German soldier (in the Jardin Public Arboretum).

Near Amiens it is the last resting place of First World War British soldiers. This includes James England aged 18 who enlisted as a 16 year old. He served in the Medical corps, before being transferred to the Borderers.
This much remember of me
World War I, Battle of the Somme, 1916. A British second lieutenant, Hugh Freston, of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, joined his battalion near Albert six days before Christmas 1915. In the trenches facing La Boisselle on 24 january 1916 he was inspecting a dugout that had been heavily shelled, and was talking to some stretcher-bearers, when more shells fell he was killed. He was twenty-four years old. In one of his poems he had written:
After I am dead
And have become part of the soil of France,
This much remember of me:
I was a great sinner, a great lover, and life puzzled me very much.
Ah love! I would have died for love!
Love can do so much, both rightly and wrongly
It remembers mothers, and little children,
And lots of others things.
O men unborn, I go now, my work unfinished!
I pass on the problem to you: the world will hate you: be brave!
Second Lieutenant Freston is buried in Bécourt Military Cemetery on the outskirts of Albert.

I wrote this poem after a visit to military cemeteries in the Albert/Bapaume area on the Somme in France. I returned to one of the many British cemeteries a year later and recorded this short, simple video.
Cimetière militaire d’Aveluy (AVELUY WOOD CEMETERY)(80)
Situé dans le bois d'Aveluy, ce cimetière militaire, édifié en juin 1916, contient les corps de trois cent quatre-vingts combattants. Le bois d'Aveluy fut entièrement détruit au cours de la Grande Guerre et au moment de la Bataille de la Somme, en 1916, il abritait une partie de l'artillerie britannique. C'est par ce bois que de nombreuses unités passèrent pour monter au front et mourir au combat le 1er juillet.
Située au bord de la D50, en provenance d'Albert par Aveluy, dans le bois portant le nom de ce village, cette nécropole contient 380 corps (354 Britanniques et 26 Australiens). Dans un premier temps appelée Lancashire dump, elle fut édifiée en juin 1916 et utilisée par les unités combattantes et les ambulances de campagne jusqu'en mars 1917, au moment du repli allemand derrière la ligne Hindenburg. D'autres corps seront toutefois inhumés ici en septembre 1918 tandis que, après l'armistice, 100 tombes isolées dans le bois y seront regroupées, et, en 1923, 124 autres provenant du proche champ de bataille.
Le bois d'Aveluy fut entièrement détruit au cours de la guerre. Au moment de la Bataille de la Somme, en 1916, il abritait une partie de l'artillerie britannique et c'est par ce bois que de nombreuses unités passèrent pour monter au front le 1er juillet. Plus tard, au cours de leur offensive du printemps 1918, le bois fut capturé par les Allemands : dans la nuit du 26 au 27 mars, ces derniers réussirent à s'y infiltrer et, malgré la résistance des 12ème, 47ème et 63ème divisions, il fut entièrement capturé le 5 avril. Il faudra ensuite attendre la fin du mois d'août pour qu'il soit définitivement libéré.

Cimetiere militaire de Beuvry (62)
Les cimetieres de Beuvry et son Extension ce trouve dans le cimetiere communal et sont des cimetières de la Première Guerre mondiale situé à Beuvry dans le département français du Pas-de-Calais. Les cimetières sont entretenus par la Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Pendant la guerre, le village de Beuvry a été en grande partie occupés par les Royal Engineers, par l'approvisionnement et par l'artillerie. Beuvry Communal Cemetery a été utilisé par les unités et les ambulances de novembre 1914 au mois d'août 1916. L'extension a commencé en mars 1916 jusqu'en octobre 1918. Après l'armistice il y a été concentré plusieurs charniers découvert au Nord et à l'Est de Béthune. On y trouve aussi plusieur tombes indivituels .
- Beuvry Communal Cemetery contient 57 britanniques,7 canadiens et 5 indiens
- Beuvry Communal Cemetery extension (206 corps 14-18 ; 18 corps 39-45) (lieu-dit La Basse Bourgogne, superficie : 815 m2). Beuvry était occupait par le Royal Engineers, des unités de soutiens et l’artillerie montée. Le cimetière fut utilisé par les unités combattantes et de secours de novembre 1914 à août 1916.

Achiet-le-Grand est située dans le département du Pas-de-Calais .Achiet-le-Grand était occupé par le 7th Bedfords à partir du 17 mars 1917, puis reperdu le 25 mars 1918 après une défense assurée par le 1st/6th Manchesters, puis repris le 23 août 1918. D'avril 1917 à mars 1918, les 45th et 49th Casualty Clearing Station occupaient le village. La gare d'Achiet était alors une tête de ligne britannique. La commune a été décorée de la croix de guerre le 23 septembre 1920
Le cimetière de la commune fut utilisé par les unités médicales britanniques d'avril 1917 à mars 1918, puis par les allemands de mars à avril 1918, et enfin par les troupes britanniques en août 1918. Près de 1 500 corps y reposent. Parmi eux 200 ne sont pas identifiés. L'extension du cimetière communal a été réalisée par Sir Edwyn Lutyens.
Un mémorial est élevé à 8 marins et soldats britanniques. Un autre mémorial rappelle les noms de 8 soldats britanniques, 1 canadiens, 1 soldat de Nouvelle-Zélande dont le lieu d'inhumation n'est pas connu. Le cimetière communal, on trouve les tombes de 4 soldats britanniques tombés au cours de la Grande Guerre.
Ce cimetière contient les tombes de soldats, marins et aviateurs dont 1263 britanniques, 5 canadiens, 61 australiens ,95 néo-zélandaises, 4 sud-africaines et 37 allemandes.
