The Alcazaba, in the heart of Malaga’s historical district, is an impressive structure that was built between eleventh and fourteenth centuries and functioned as a fortress and palace. It has a very uneven floor plan, with all its living quarters at different levels in order to adapt to the terrain and converged within two walled compounds. Some of the most notable sights within the edifice are the Arch of Christ (which for years served as a chapel), the Patio de Armas (Parade Ground), which has now been turned into an Arabic-style garden, as well as the palace zone, known for its stunning caliphal arch work that opens into a hall.

La Alcazaba - the Moorish palace of Malaga
The Alcazaba fortress and palace is one of two stone castles that dominate the skyline of the old city. It's hard to miss connecting as it does with the Castillo del Gibralfaro, the main Moorish stronghold higher up, forming a stone fortification that stretches over a kilometre up the steep hill. In old Malaga the sea lapped at the walls of these castles and they were ideally placed to defend the port and its mdina below. The Alcazaba is the Arab word for a fortified citadel, and this citadel held within it's strong walls an entire palace complex typical of the Nasrid dynasty, the high point of muslim culture in the kigdom of Al Andalus.
It has received extensive restoration as it was in fairly parlous condition by the 19th century, and it was due to such works that the remains of the extensive Roman theatre were uncovered beneath its walls. Indeed much of the stone for the palace was removed directly from the old Roman city it was built upon. The palace dates from nearly a 1000 years ago, but the current form, with its palace built around courtyards and patios dates from the Nasrid time around 1280. A visit to the Alcazaba gives you a vivid idea of the sophistication and power of the culture that dominated for over 700 years. The views are spectacular and the military significance of such a place is plain to see. It is open from 0900h to 2000 in summer months, but shuts at 1800h from November to March. Alcazaba de Málaga, Andalucía
La Alcazaba de la ciudad de Málaga, en la provincia homónima Málaga, Andalucía (España). Es una fortificación palaciega de la época musulmana, construida sobre una anterior fortificación de origen fenicio-púnico. Se encuentra en las faldas del monte Gibralfaro, en una posición elevada pero contigua y unida al centro histórico de la ciudad, lo que constituía la antigua medina de Mālaqa, y en cuya cumbre se halla el Castillo de Gibralfaro.
Ocupaba el extremo oriental del desaparecido recinto amurallado de la ciudad. Su superficie actual de 15.000 metros cuadrados no alcanza ni siquiera la mitad del tamaño que poseía en su época de esplendor, como demuestran los planos históricos conservados.
Según el arquitecto restaurador, Leopoldo Torres Balbás, la Alcazaba de Málaga es el prototipo de la arquitectura militar del periodo de taifa, siglo XI, con su doble recinto amurallado y gran cantidad de fortificaciones.
Este Palacio fortaleza cuyo nombre en árabe significa ciudadela es uno de los monumentos históricos de la ciudad, un espacio muy visitado por conjugar historia y belleza en un mismo recinto.
Construida entre 1057 y 1063 según los historiadores musulmanes a instancias del rey de taifas bereber de Granada, Badis ben Habús. En su construcción se emplearon materiales de acarreo y se reutilizaron piezas del anexo teatro romano, como columnas y capiteles.
Posteriormente llegan a Málaga los Almorávides en 1092 y los Almohades en 1146. En el 1279 la conquista Muhammad II Ben al-Ahmar y pasa al reino Nazarita. Su reforma le confiere una profunda impronta como edificación nazarí. Conjuga las necesidades de defensa y la belleza de un palacio árabe organizado a base de patios rectangulares y crujías en torno con sus jardines y estanques. Sus estancias buscan en los interiores la alternancia de luces y sombras para conseguir esos juegos que tan bien dominan los alarifes árabes.
Su componente militar la hace una de las obras más importantes musulmanas conservada en España. Su mejor defensa estaba en su situación, dominando desde sus balcones la ciudad y la bahía.
A su alrededor había un barrio, hoy totalmente desaparecido, que tenía incluso su sistema para evacuar las aguas fecales, y con letrinas en casi todas las casas, lo que acredita el alto nivel de civilización que existía en esos momentos.
La Alcazaba de hoy día es el resultado de un largo proceso histórico que podría dividirse en cuatro etapas: El periodo árabe, del siglo X al siglo XV; Tras la Reconquista hasta el siglo XVIII; el del abandono de su estructura militar y deterioro, que abarcaría el siglo XIX hasta los comienzos del siglo XX; y el de su recuperación como Monumento Histórico Artístico desde la década de 1930 hasta nuestros días. This was our second day exploring Málaga. Since the Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro offer free entry Sundays after 2pm, we decided to tour both! These are massive fortress castles overlooking the city. The views were stunning and the uphill walk was totally worth it.

Málaga is a municipality, capital of the Province of Málaga, in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Spain. It lies on the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) of the Mediterranean, about 100 kilometres (62.14 miles) east of the Strait of Gibraltar and about 130 km (80.78 mi) north of Africa.
Málaga's history spans about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. It was founded by the Phoenicians as Malaka about 770 BC, and from the 6th century BC was under the hegemony of Ancient Carthage. Then, from 218 BC, it was ruled by the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire as Malaca (Latin). After the fall of the empire and the end of Visigothic rule, it was under Islamic rule as Mālaqah (مالقة) for 800 years, but in 1487, the Crown of Castille gained control after the Reconquista. The archaeological remains and monuments from the Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian eras make the historic center of the city an open museum, displaying its history of nearly 3,000 years.

Malaga is one of the oldest cities in the world, founded in the 8th century by the Phoenicians. Today, art is everywhere-- you can experience exhibits dedicated to glass and crystal, classic cars, contemporary installations, and, of course, the works of Picasso, who was born here. Wander past banana trees and beautiful fountains as you walk through Paseo del Parque, then hit the old city to quench your thirst at a Spanish tavern.
Malaga´s cathedral was built between 1528 and 1782 on or near the site of a former mosque. While original plans had allowed for two towers, both lack of funds those donated to American Independence resulted in the completion of only one, giving rise to the name by which the cathedral is affectionately referred to, La Manquita, loosely interpreted as one armed woman.
La Alcazaba is Malaga's most important landmark, and overlooks the city from a hilltop inland. It is one of two Moorish fortresses in the city, the other being the Castillo de Gibralfaro, situated above. The Alcazaba is the best-preserved Moorish fortress palace in Spain.
The magnificent Castillo de Gibralfaro sits on a high hill overlooking Malaga city and port, and dates back to the 10th century. The image of Gibralfaro is well known: you can see it in both Malaga city and province's seal and flag.
The hill where the Gibralfaro is situated forms part of the Montes de Malaga mountain range, located to the east and north of Malaga city - this land is protected by the Montes' natural park status.
