The Mission of MCMM is to document, preserve, celebrate, share and perpetuate the Mid-Century Modern architectural heritage of Midland, Michigan. In the early 1930s, Alden B. Dow F.A.I.A. introduced modern design to Midland, Michigan and created over 130 structures during his 50-year career. His innovative and dynamic structures initiated an architectural heritage that is unprecedented in the United States.
Dow’s creative concepts inspired dozens of other architects, including Jackson Hallett A.I.A, Glenn Beach A.I.A., Robert Schwartz A.I.A, and Francis “Red” Warner A.I.A. These gifted architects and more, also created beautifully-crafted Mid-Century Modern structures that are an integral part of the over 400 buildings that dominate Midland. As each structure and the story of this incredible body of work is documented, it will further enhance Michigan’s incredible design heritage and highlight those individuals who created new definitions and solutions in design and architecture.

BEST CANOPY WALK IN THE U.S.:/// Dow Gardens | Whiting Forest | The Tridge: Midland, Michigan
This week we had the coolest adventure ever in Midland, Michigan!
Dow Gardens is beautiful -110 acres of flowers, plants, outdoor children’s activities- it’s super cool and it’s connected to Whiting Forest, home to the longest canopy walk in the United States!!!
The boys did such an awesome job on the canopy walk, but their favorite part was the playground in Whiting forest! It wasn’t just their favorite part of our trip, I would have to say it is their favorite playground they have ever been to! The best part- it totally exhausted them!
We had so much fun at the Gardens too! The children’s garden especially - so much for the kids to do.
Pro tip: make sure you bring an extra outfit - they got drenched!!!
We loved the downtown Midland and we were instructed that we had to check out the Tridge which is a three-way wooden footbridge that marks the start of The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail, an awesome place to bike and hike in Michigan!
We even found the world-famous -Charles W. Howard - Santa Claus School, where Santas from around the world go to learn how to become the big man himself!
Thank you so much for watching our adventure to Midland! If you haven’t already subscribed please consider doing so and ringing that bell!
****And please - comment down below- when is the last time you did something that was outside of your comfort zone?
Have a great week!

Midland: City of Modern Explorers
As you enter Midland from any direction you are welcomed by
signs that say “Midland the City of Modern Explorers.” Although
it relates to our science, art and all aspects of our city and its
people, nowhere is it more evident than in our architecture.
Beginning in the early 1930s, Alden B. Dow began to refine
buildings that allowed us to think and see in new and different
ways. He focused on how a building functions as well as its
beauty. He knew as humans we are happier and healthier when
we are connected to nature and involved in it. His appreciation
for horizontal-focused structures, clean and uninterrupted lines
and integration of new technologies was part a national
movement that created a new definition of architecture for
the United States.
Together with a number of outstanding architects like
Jack Hallett, Red Warner, Robert Schwartz, Francis Beech and
many others, they created a collection of Mid-Twenty Century
Modern buildings that is unparalleled in the United States. As
you explore our city, enjoy the beauty, science and artistry of
the over 250 modern structures that give Midland a unique
definition and energy.

The Harold C. Price / U-Haul House: A Video Tour by Frank Henry
Frank Myron Henry (1934-2013) was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright when he met him while a student at Phoenix Community College. Mr. Henry was on site several times with Mr. Wright during construction of the Harold C. Price / U-Haul House. Frank became the first Arizona graduate to receive a Bachelor of Architecture when he graduated from Arizona State University in 1960. His senior thesis was chosen by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as the best in the nation. Frank's knowledge and focus later resulted in him being named Studio Master Emeritus at Taliesin West's Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.
Mr. Henry generously toured groups through the U-Haul House for a decade. He concluded each tour of the house with a quote from Mr. Wright: After 65 years, I finally put it together here.
Enjoy this American Masterpiece.

Forty years ago, Charles Breed, a Michigan artist and teacher, began raising dahlias at his home. By 1992 he had over 1,700 tubers and had run out of room to grow them. He asked his next door neighbor for permission to plant dahlias on the property next to his own. The neighbor agreed and the vacant property at the corner of Main Street and Orchard Drive became Dahlia Hill. A non-profit organization was established to raise money to purchase the property. Individuals, private groups and local foundations all contributed funds and the Dahlia Hill Society was founded. Visitors from all over the United States have come to visit Dahlia Hill for its impressive variety of dahlias that are planted annually. At the top of Dahlia Hill is a unique art gallery featuring original designs in cast paper, bronze and other media. The pieces are based on designs by Charles Breed.
