FATHER ALPHONSE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF FUNDING MUSIC STUDENTS
Benefit: Father Alphonse, Friends & A Giant Piano
Saturday, May 25 -2013- 8 p.m.
Recorded by: Anthony R Perez
An intimate evening with Father Alphonse Stephenson, some of his extremely talented musical friends and a nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano.
This special concert benefits The Cecelia Foundation
On Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 8pm, Father Alphonse will host an all star concert at the Algonquin Arts Theater in Manasquan entitled FATHER ALPHONSE'S FRIENDS AND A GIANT PIANO to benefit The Cecelia Foundation. Father Alphonse, well known at the Jersey Shore, is the founder and conductor of the Orchestra of St Peter by the Sea and the originator and producer of the now retired Festival of the Atlantic which used to attract thousands of music lovers to Point Pleasant Beach each Wednesday night from 1988 through 2009.
Founded the same year he began the summer beach concerts, the Cecelia Foundation has gifted young, promising music students with professional quality instruments for the past 25 years. We've given away violins, violas, cellos, basses, flutes, trombones, drums...you name it, said The Reverend Alphonse Stephenson during a recent interview from his home in Washington, DC. Father Alphonse, an Air Force Chaplain of the Air National Guard and Brigadier General, serves as the Director of the National Guard Joint Chaplaincy at the Pentagon. Sports scholarships are popular and readily accessible for the athlete, but what about the young musician? asked Stephenson. Funded through the sale of the Orchestra's recordings and the Paul F. Zito, M.D. Foundation, The Cecelia Foundation is designed to encourage the serious study and training of the future classical musician. The instruments available to aspiring musicians through school systems often discourage the student from practicing, referring to the often dismal condition of school owned instruments. As the student begins to gain a certain degree of proficiency, an instrument capable of responding to the evolving talent serves as an encouragement to the growing musician.
The criteria for awarding a student with a new instrument is stringent; a recommendation from his or her private teacher, a respectable academic record, all accompanied by a genuine financial need. Financial cutbacks are the order of the day. School arts programs are often the 'low-hanging-fruit' and sometimes the first to be cut, and families are prioritizing their spending during these tough times. When you find a student who's anxious to learn, we just can't sit back and do nothing. The new instruments are always awarded during a concert, and the recipient is invited to the performance by their teacher, unaware they will be presented with the gift. I have seen a 15 year old boy sob long after the performance as he held a new bass fiddle is his arms!
For the May 25th performance, Father Alphonse is renting a 9 foot Steinway Concert Grand for the Algonquin to serve as the centerpiece for the performance. Father Alphonse concluded, Having been in professional music for the past 33 years of my life, from Broadway to Carnegie Hall to the beach, I'm tapping many talented friends and colleagues...singers, pianists, violinists, all to come to help this night be a labor of love for us, a night to be remembered by the audience, and a boost in the arm for the Cecelia Foundation and our mission to foster the future of good music.
