Statue of female civil rights icons to be erected in NY's Central Park
New York's Central Park is getting real when it comes to women who made their mark on history. The city's Public Design Commission approved a Central Park monument on Monday that will feature - for the first time - real women from history, and pay tribute to civil rights pioneers Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth. The monument to the three women, who were all New Yorkers, is to be designed by world renowned artist Meredith Bergmann, and dedicated next August in time for the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States. New York's Public Design Commission approved a statue to women's rights pioneers Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony for Central Park on Monday. The design of the statue is show above The monument to the three women who were all New Yorkers was designed by world renowned artist Meredith Bergmann (pictured), and dedicated next August in time for the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States 'My hope is that all people, but especially young people, will be inspired by this image of women of different races, different religious backgrounds and different economic status working together to change the world,' Bergmann (pictured) said after Monday's voteThe sculpture will break what some have dubbed the 'bronze ceiling' in the 166-year-old urban oasis. Final approval came from the Public Design Commission, an agency that reviews artworks on city-owned property.'This statue conveys the power of women working together to bring about revolutionary change in our society,' said Pam Elam, president of the Monumental Women's Statue Fund, a nonprofit of advocates, historians and community leaders including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. The design was chosen from 91 competing submissions, reports the Associated Press. About $1.5 million was privately raised to create and maintain the new monument and for an associated educational program.'My hope is that all people, but especially young people, will be inspired by this image of women of different races, different religious backgrounds and different economic status working together to change the world,' Bergmann said after the vote.Central Park already has almost two dozen statues honoring men who had an impact on history, including Beethoven, Christopher Columbus, and even Cuban poet and national hero Jose Marti, as well as a few lesser known names like Fitz-Greene Halleck. Halleck was probably 'a poet you've never heard of, for good reason,' wrote the Daily News in an editorial in support of the statue honoring Anthony, Cady Stanton and Truth, all New Yorkers.Until now, there hasn't been a single monument in the park honoring women who made their mark on history. There are statues of fictional, female characters, including Mother Goose and Alice in Wonderland. There's even Romeo's Juliet, which comes with a version of him planting a smooch on her. There's no man necessary to share the limelight w
Cycling Through Central Park In New York
Join me as I hire a bike and cycle through the stunning Central Park in New York City. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with 40 million visitors in 2013, and one of the most filmed locations in the world. The park itself covers an area of 843 acres making it the fifth largest park in New York City.
In this video I cycle over 6 miles through the park along with stopping off at some of famous locations along the way. This includes the John Lennon Memorial in Strawberry Fields and the incredible Alice In Wonderland statue.
As mentioned in the video, here's a link to the bike rental shop I used just a short 5 minute walk away from Central Park -

Sculptor on first women s statue for Central Park
(21 Nov 2019) Sculptor Meredith Bergmann recognizes the honor of creating the first statue of women in New York's Central Park.
Bergmann's monument to three leaders in the fight for women's rights - Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth - will take its place among the 23 statues of men and two fictional women - Mother Goose and Alice in Wonderland - currently in the park.
I think about what it would have meant to me as a child to see this monument, to know these histories. I think about the size of it, the scale of it, where it will be and who it will affect. And I am incredibly moved to have been chosen to add this to New York City, Bergmann said.
Bergmann pointed out that her statue is a contemporary take on the 19th century monument that should have been built for these women and wasn't.
It has taken six years for the statue to become a reality.
The effort was spearheaded by the nonprofit Monumental Women which has raised $1.5 million to fund the statue.
The idea initially met opposition from park officials who balked at putting any more statues in the 166-year-old park.
So we said, could you show me where that is written. Is it a law or a regulation or some sort of codification of 'There shall be no other statues' ? And of course they couldn't because they made it up as they went along, Pam Elam, president of Monumental Women pointed out.
Final approval was granted in October after several redesigns and the addition of Sojourner Truth, an escaped slave and women's rights activist.
There were different changes and I think there was a concern that there'd be a woman of color who was part, she was part of the decision making for all of us to vote. And Sojourner Truth also was a New Yorker, Gale Brewer, the Manhattan Borough President, said.
The original design was chosen from 91 entries.
Bergmann says the current design shows a slice in time open to interpretation.
It's a group of three women in conversation, the exact moment in the conversation is up to you to decide who is listening to whom, who is speaking to whom, Bergmann said.
The monumental task of creating the nine-foot (2.7-meter) tall statue has put Bergmann on a tight timeline.
Because of the time urgency of this project, which working backward from August 2020, when they are to be unveiled, we need a number of weeks for installation, four to six months for bronze casting, which means six months for bronze casting and then a month for mold making. I have to finish these by the end of this month, Bergmann said.
The monument will be dedicated on August 26, 2020 marking the 100th anniversary of American women winning the right to vote.

Why Alice Roosevelt Was America's Wildest First Daughter
Alice Roosevelt was an eccentric and strong-willed woman. She danced on the rooftops of millionaires. She wore a pet garter snake as an accessory. But what the most important is that she was the face of the New Woman movement. She influenced the suffrage movement and the sexual revolution.
Alice was the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt. Her mother died when giving birth. Her father took off for his ranch and left little Alice in New York. She lived with her strong-willed aunt Ann whose character she later emulated. When Theodore returned, he married for the second time. His new wife didn’t accept Alice and Alice became distant from the family.
Alice regarded herself as a solitary woman and had a single-woman lifestyle. She became an antithesis for what a young woman of her time should be. She raced cars, smoked publicly, chewed gum, played poker, wore pants, and partied all night. Alice was banned from the White House twice. First, for burying a voodoo doll of Secretary of War’s wife in the yard. Then, for badmouthing new president Woodrow Wilson.
Her eccentric behavior was fodder for gossip in high society. But she was irritated by the media and ignored the attention. Young women viewed Alice as an example to follow. She was constantly involved in politics. She became known as the “other Washington Monument” for her political activity.
In 1905, Alice met her future husband, Congressman Nicholas Longworth. Longworth was a wealthy womanizer who led an active social life. Both spent their first years together in a state of revelry. Their revelry didn’t subside even when domesticity began. In the 1920s, still being married, Alice began relationships with Senator William Borah.
She maintained that her only daughter was fathered by hi. Her daughter struggled with depression and addiction and died in 1957. In her later years, Alice served on the national board of directors of America First. It was a committee dedicated to keeping the U.S. neutral during World War II.
Alice would always voice her political opinions loudly in the press and in person. Alice always lived by the old adage. Alice suffered from health problems in her 80s. She had a double mastectomy. She died in 1980 at the age of 96.

Anna Hyatt Huntington's New York Sculpture
An exhibition curated by art history professor Anne Higonnet and 20 of her students explores the legacy of the early 20th-century sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Although Huntington's works—including the Joan of Arc sculpture on Riverside Drive at 93rd Street and jaguars at the Bronx Zoo—grace many of New York City's public spaces, she has been largely forgotten. The exhibition runs through March 15 at Columbia's Wallach Art Gallery.
Skyscrapers of New York City, from the North River
SUMMARY
Filmed from a moving boat, the film depicts the Hudson River (i.e., North River) shoreline and the piers of lower Manhattan beginning around Fulton Street and extending to Castle Garden and Battery Park. It begins at one of the American Line piers (Pier 14 or 15, opposite Fulton Street) where an American Line steamer, either the New York or Paris, is seen docked [Frame: 0120]. The camera passes one of the Manhattan-to-New Jersey commuter ferries to Jersey City or Communipaw [0860]. Proceeding south, the distinct double towers of the Park Row, or Syndicate Building, erected in 1897-98, can be seen in the background [0866]. A coastal freighter is next [1560], then Trinity Church appears, to the left of which can be seen the Surety Building, as a tug with a C on the stack passes in foreground [2032]. Several small steamboats come into view [2136], and the B.T. Babbitt Soap factory at Pier 6 is seen [2300], followed by the Pennsylvania Railroad piers (#5 & #4), with a group of docked railroad car floats [2556], and the Lehigh Valley Railroad piers (#3 & #2), also with car floats [3030]. Next are the Bowling Green Building (rectangular, with facade to camera) [3208], the Whitehall Building (vertical, thin side to camera) [3388], followed by Pennsylvania Railroad Pier #1 [3630]. Pier A (with a clock tower) is seen with the New York Harbor Police steam boat Patrol at its end [4654]. The Bowling Green Offices and the Produce Exchange at Bowling Green are visible in the background. The breakwater (sheltered landing) and the New York City Fireboat House appears [5270] and the distinctive round structure, Castle Garden, once a fort and immigrant station, but at the time of filming the City Aquarium, comes into view [5438]. The camera then pans east along the Battery Park promenade: the Barge Office (with tower) is visible in the distance [5804], and further out the Brooklyn shoreline with the grain elevators at Atlantic Avenue can be seen [6088]. This view is continued, with only a minor break in continuity, in the film Panorama of Sky Scrapers and Brooklyn Bridge From the East River. Together they comprise a sweep around the southern tip of Manhattan, from Fulton Street on the Hudson to the Brooklyn Bridge.
From a contemporary Edison film company catalog: SKY-SCRAPERS OF NEW YORK CITY, FROM THE NORTH RIVER. A Beautiful panoramic view of lower New York from Barclay Street to Battery Park, showing a beautiful stereoscopic effect of the sky-scrapers in the business section of the city. Old Castle Garden, at which place hundreds of thousands of emigrants have landed from time to time, but now used as an Aquarium, is also seen in the picture. One of the finest panoramic pictures of New York ever taken. Code word Uraneux [code for telegraphic orders]. Length 195 feet. Class B. $23.40.

Urban Naturalist Leads Education Efforts in New York City Parks
The love of wildlife takes many people to western U.S. states like Wyoming, California and Colorado, where they can work or play in a one of America's vast national parks. But Sarah Aucoin has chosen to protect wildlife in a place where you find much less of it -- New York City. As Paige Kollock reports, Aucoin is making a difference as an Urban Park Ranger, raising awareness about Manhattan's green spaces and restoring the city's natural heritage.

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
